Held each year on 1 May, the Berliner Philharmoniker’s European Concert has ever since 1991 been a byword for excellence. In a performance in Prague’s Estates Theatre, one of Europe’s most beautiful historical venues, the orchestra under the celebrated pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim is heard with some of Mozart’s most beloved masterpieces. What is more, the orchestra was seated in a reconstruction of the sets used in this very theatre at the world première of Don Giovanni.

There are few places you're likely to find classically influenced jazz compositions, Olivier Messiaen's "O Sacrum Convivium," and the Allman Brothers Band's "Whipping Post" side by side. Guitarist Joel Harrison's Search, his second date as a leader for Sunnyside, does exactly that. Harrison is accompanied by a killer band: saxophonist Donny McCaslin, pianist Gary Versace, violinist Christian Howes, cellist Dana Leong, bassist Stephan Crump, and drummer Clarence Penn. McCaslin and Penn truly stand out in this ensemble.

Thus 70 Strong is a celebration of his 70th birthday as he performs with an all-star crew on an album that is a bit more up-tempo and briskly in the pocket than the rather discreet and probing, Gattitude (BFM Jazz, 2013).

David Ellefson announces to release a new solo album. Under the name ELLEFSON the Megadeth bassist cooperates with various artists from bands like Anthrax, Crobot, Sacred Reich, Megadeth, and many more. The whole thing will be a cover album with the title "No Cover" to be released on Friday, November 20,, 2020.

The "Buddha Lounge" series saw the release of AC/DC's best rock tribute to date. After all, if in the case of the "lounge ensemble" treatments of the classics of The Beatles and Metallica, the originals of the songs, albeit with difficulty, were guessed, the arrangement of the rhythmic imperishable Australians for, let's put it this way, metallophones and unobtrusive rhythm boxes, gave little resemblance to the original and therefore extremely humorous musical an object. After all, this whole series is pop postmodernism in its purest form, invented and recorded not at all for the delight of the audience in chill-outs, but precisely for the amusement of fans of heavier music.

La « Première Dame » du jazz nous est présentée ici sous toutes ses coutures. Et le plus étonnant, c’est qu’elle se révèle aussi à l’aise en compagnie de Dizzy Gillespie, chez qui elle découvre en 1947 les secrets du « bebop » (plages 20 à 22), qu’auprès de Louis Armstrong, avec lequel elle manifeste une radieuse complicité (plages 1, 2, 3, 9 et 10), ou encore en duo avec Louis Jordan, pionnier du « rock and roll » et savoureux swingman populaire (plage 12). Rien ne semble, en effet, déstabiliser Ella, qu’on entend tour à tour soutenue par de grosses machines (les big bands de Sy Oliver ou de Gillespie) ou par le trio emmené par son mari d’alors, le grand Ray Brown, contrebassiste inébranlable, trio dans lequel l’immense Hank Jones exerce ses talents de pianiste-accompagnateur stimulant et discret (les plages 13 à 19, constituant quelques-uns de ses premiers enregistrements publics, formule qu’elle reprendra souvent et avec grand succès).

English rock band UFO‘s 1979 live album Strangers in the Night is being reissued as an 8CD deluxe edition in November.

A decade after they delivered Okie Dokie It's the Orb on Kompakt on…Kompakt, Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann return to the stalwart Cologne label with an album bearing a less sportive title and it sounds like serious sci-fi business. The standard edition consists of four tracks, each one between nine and 15 minutes in length. Not one of them is humorously titled "Captain Korma" or "Komplikation," unless "God's Mirrorball" triggers a recollection of the first Tad album. Unlike Okie Dokie, this is all new, not an amalgamation of tweaked, previously released tracks and new material. Lest this be seen as the Orb's "most mature work to date," within seconds of the opener, a mild-mannered voice from a colorful documentary about Sumerian gods intones, "If you believe in evil, then you probably need a whack on the back of the neck with a big fucking stick." After four-and-a-half minutes of ambience that intensifies in gradual fashion, a fluid, sturdy beat and light chime-like accents enter to set the tone for the remainder of the 50-minute program.
