Finnforest were formed in the mid-70's by Finnish brothers Pekka (guitar, bass) and Jussi Tegelman (drums) with synthesizer and keyboard player Jukka Rissanen. Mostly influenced by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, their style also evokes early Camel, Finch and Caravan. Their music is characterized by energetic and spirited guitar/organ interplay, interesting compositions and very good vintage 70's jamming overall. Their eponymous album, released in 1975, is perhaps their most Mahavishnu influenced, with Rissanen sticking largely to his Hammond organ and using his synths sparingly, to mostly good effect. "Latho Matkalle" (1976), considered their best effort, boasts the contribution of two extra keyboard players, an additional bassist and a string quartet. You'll sense both a Mahavishnu and Weather Report influence on this one, which contains some mighty fine guitar work as well as some very good compositions.

Although a little slim at 45 minutes, Verve's compilation of 11 romantic titles recorded by Dinah Washington includes some of her finest material. Concentrating on the mid- to late '50s, Dinah Washington for Lovers surveys the years when she finally bloomed as a popular purveyor of adult vocal jazz. Surprisingly, it doesn't include the most popular ballad of her career, "What a Diff'rence a Day Made," but Washington had a certain way with standards that never fails to delight; no other vocal interpreter can make listeners contemplate lyrics anew even after they've heard it enough times to memorize. While most of the selections here feature the rosy strings and orchestra that Washington preferred late in her career, a pair of mellow ballads ("Darn That Dream" and "Crazy He Calls Me") come from a very different type of recording, her 1954 jam session landmark, Dinah Jams.

Five years ago, Jason Seizer released his last album "Cinema Paradiso". Since then the quartet has been touring regularly on different stages and festivals and the interaction of the band has formed a fascinatingly cohesive aesthetic unit since its inception. In November, Jason Seizer releases his sixth album on the PIROUET RECORDS label with the title VERTIGO, a recording of a legendary concert in BRs Studio 2.The repertoire of this formation has grown enormously, melodies from Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo", Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter" or Ennio Morricone's "Cinema Paradiso" alternate with the musicians' own compositions, and the listener experiences a collective celebration of sound colors.

Including the UK top 20 singles The Damned Don't Cry and Night Train, The Anvil soared into the UK top 10 album chart, firmly establishing the New Romantic super group as bonafide hit makers. With sophisticated dance beats and haunting melodies, masterminded primarily by Ultravox front man Midge Ure and delivered by the inimitable Steve Strange, Visage had their legacy guaranteed. This brand new 2020 edition CD reissue of The Anvil has been newly remastered from original master tapes and boasts 7 bonus tracks including B sides, rare dance mixes, and a previously unreleased remix.

South African pianist Bheki Mseleku has been a familiar name in England's jazz circles but, to date, has not recorded for any major or independent American label. This album, recorded mostly in London in 1991, has now been issued domestically by Rounder. While his percussive, slashing style is reminiscent of McCoy Tyner and Don Pullen, he has his own voicings, phrasing, rhythmic drive, and sound. A corps of talented saxophonists handle frontline duties, among them Courtney Pine, Jean Toussaint, and Steve Williamson.

This singles collection can be regarded as OMD's greatest hits. It may not have some of the hits that are on other collections but this one is in my humble opinion one of THE best compilations of any artists. The only drawback to this compilation is that they are the radio or single version. Often album versions are longer and one may miss some of the characteristics of the original album version. But each of the singles are quite complete in themselves.

This is a marvelous effort by two newcomers to the Fax label. Sometimes light and melodic, and other times dark and trippy, there is a bit of everything here. "Hinuit" best exemplifies the free-floating musical side while "The Cage" offers up some serious "sparsed-out" trance. Minimalistic in its approach, yet engaging in its results, only carefully-tuned ears will notice the subtle sonic hues and tonal dynamics of this record.

This early release from Randy Weston finds the pianist still in his formative stages. His supple technique is evident, along with key influences: Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, and Art Tatum - their lessons not quite yet melded into an approach of Weston's own. As well, this 1955 date is from the period before Weston's time spent in Nigeria and Northern Africa, where he absorbed musical experiences that would help form the more distinctive approach that emerged in his playing in the 1960s. The set shows Weston's facility with standards, Ellingtonia, even ragtime, but, with several tracks coming in well under four minutes, the performances offer little room for development. The impression here is that of a pianist of great potential limbering up before the curtain rises for the show…

Vocalist Marc Sadane went from his hometown of Savannah, GA to New York City to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. But he soon found music more to his liking, and became lead singer for Tungsten Steele. He departed for a solo career in 1977 and became the vocalist for the house band at Mikell's. Sadane toured with Stephanie Mills and received so much acclaim and such a great response that he signed a solo deal with Warner Bros. in the early '80s. But while he proved a capable, sometimes captivating singer in the urban contemporary mode, he was unable to generate any commercial success with either his singles or albums. Not even the production and writing skills of the Mtume/Lucas team could garner Sadane any hits.

Jeffrey "Jeff" Lynne is an English songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer who gained fame as the leader and sole constant member of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) and was a co-founder and member of The Traveling Wilburys together with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. What a fantastic way for artists from many genres to honor a man who has nurtured great music his entire life, Jeff Lynne. Lynne Me Your Ears contains many familiar ELO and Jeff Lynne classic tunes, some done very much like the originals, but others are done with new style, in a new vision and yet with love and respect for the original.
Given Lynne's love of melody, it's no surprise that the compilation is top-loaded with some of the best power pop acts of the '90s and 2000s (the Shazam, Michael Carpenter, Sparkle*Jets U.K.)…

This rather awkwardly titled album (Alvin Lee's horoscope sign is Sagittarius) is a true solo project from the ex-Ten Years After frontman. He plays virtually all the instruments except keyboards, overdubbing himself in his home studio to impressive effect. Musically, he's not blazing any new territory at this point in his career, content with sticking to the Chuck Berry styled rocking blues boogies and the country twang he has dabbled in for 40 years…
