CRYPTO was a short lived jazz rock band from Zandvoort formed in 1973 and disbanded in 1975. It was led by Peter SCHON who had writting and production duties and played an array of keyboards and synths which shine on the record. They were comparable to funky fusion of PLACEBO while they lasted, and some of the members along with SCHON would work in another similar band called PUMPKIN.

Misty Blues’ ninth album Weed ‘Em & Reap, which was released this Spring, contains a wide variety of sounds — it’s a record “squarely rooted in the blues traditions, while meandering in and out of jazz, funk and soul,” according to the band. At the helm of the ship is lead singer Gina Coleman, whose vocals are full, rich, and at times haunting. At its best, Weed ‘Em & Reap dives into the pains and passions of intimacy, and it does it well.

After “La Légende d’Eer” in 2016, the PERIHEL series presents one of the milestones of electroacoustic music: IANNIS XENAKIS’ mindblowing 54-minutes oeuvre “Persepolis”, mixed from the original 8 track tapes by MARTIN WURMNEST and mastered / cut by RASHAD BECKER.

This interesting; and one-time matchup features Larry Coryell and Emily Remler on a set of guitar duets. It is easy to tell the two players apart, yet their styles were quite complementary. Highlights of the date (which has four standards, Pat Martino's "Gerri's Blues," and two Coryell originals) include "Joy Spring," "How My Heart Sings" and "How Insensitive."

Burn My Eyes is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Machine Head, released on August 9, 1994 by Roadrunner Records. The album's themes generally tie into the social disorder and corresponding inner tension that the band was exposed to in their native Oakland, California, reflected in Robb Flynn's lyrics, such as the Los Angeles Riots of 1992 and the Waco Siege of 1993. The album shipped over 400,000 copies worldwide, becoming Roadrunner Records's best selling debut album until the release of Slipknot's debut album. This is Machine Head's only studio album to feature drummer Chris Kontos.

Fifty-six years in the making, the earliest track on the Ultimate Jazz Christmas album is Nat King Cole's rare 1946 original trio version of ''The Christmas Song'' written that year by Mel Torme and Robert Wells; the most recent track is Norah Jones's poignant version of Horace Silver's beautiful ''Peace,'' a 2002 track from the EP that Norah Jones recorded upon signing with Blue Note Records. Jazz has never been a slave to convention and this collection includes other contemporary pieces like Duke Pearson's haunting ''Christo Redenter'' by Donald Byrd with a vocal choir, That Jones's touching ''A Child Is Born'' by the orchestra he co-led with Mel Lewis, and Johnny Moore's ultra-cool ''Merry Christmas Baby'' sung by Charles Brown. And when it comes to holiday classics, Count Basie, Eliane Elias, Duke Pearson, and Booker Ervin swing them and Nancy Wilson and Lou Rawls sing them as never before. Unlike most Christmas collections, there's not a corny tune or a schlocky performance to make you reach for the skip button. I is, after all, the ultimate jazz Christmas album.

There could hardly be a better start for the new year – the 2014 jazz season will be opened by none other than Jeff Ballard, together with outstanding guitarist Lionel Loueke and the great Miguel Zenon on saxophone. Their first ever album collaboration “Time’s Tales” offers a varied repartoire from Thelonious Monk to Iranian folk melodies, with influences from Bartok, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Stevie Wonder and more. At the same time, it reflects the musicians’ different geographic backgrounds – the USA, Benin and Puerto Rico.

Mixing the dusky romanticism of Dexter Gordon and the progressive tonal ideology of John Coltrane, Booker Ervin is often filed under "A" for amalgam alongside other overlooked tenor masters such as Tina Brooks and Hank Mobley. Structurally Sound is perhaps not Ervin's most provocative album, but a solid and tasty endeavor featuring the suspended chord sounds popularized by McCoy Tyner during the late '60s. Here, the chords come via the brilliant pianist John Hicks, who opens the album with funky high-end triplet figures on Randy Weston's "Berkshire Blues."
