A Momentary Lapse of Reason is the thirteenth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released in the UK on 7 September 1987 by EMI and the following day in the US on Columbia. It was recorded primarily on guitarist David Gilmour's converted houseboat, Astoria. A Momentary Lapse of Reason was the first Pink Floyd album recorded without founding member Roger Waters, who departed in 1985. The production was marred by legal fights over the rights to the Pink Floyd name, which were not resolved until several months after release. It also saw the return of keyboardist and founding member Richard Wright, who had resigned from the band under pressure from Waters during the recording of The Wall (1979).

The Division Bell is the fourteenth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released on 28 March 1994 by EMI Records in the United Kingdom and on 4 April by Columbia Records in the United States. The second Pink Floyd album recorded without founding member Roger Waters, The Division Bell was written mostly by guitarist and singer David Gilmour and keyboardist Richard Wright. It features Wright's first lead vocal on a Pink Floyd album since The Dark Side of the Moon (1973). Gilmour's fiancée, novelist Polly Samson, co-wrote many of the lyrics, which deal with themes of communication. It was the last Pink Floyd album recorded with Wright, who died in 2008.

Christian-Pierre La Marca here presents baroque pieces (for viola da gamba) as well as modern and futuristic music in a highly personal, patterned reflection that is radically innovatory for the instrument and its repertoire, stimulating for the performer and fascinating for the listener. In this cleverly devised sequence, pieces by Marais, Purcell, Telemann, Sainte-Colombe, Dowland and Rameau interact with Grieg, Chaplin, Dutilleux, Escaich, Ligeti, Casals, the Beatles and Sollima, interwoven with electronic music realized by electro-creatives Rayann and M.A.S. during the March 2020 lockdown. As la Marca confides: "I really like the cross-cultural, multi-genre aspect of this album: I love going from one musical style to another, creating links that did not previously exist, so as to reveal the infinite possibilities of the instrument".

Pine continued to cement himself tightly within the Marsalis cartel here, associating with the likes of alumni Kenny Kirkland (piano), Charnett Moffett (bass), and Jeff Watts (drums), with Delfeayo Marsalis again at the production console. This could almost pass as a Branford Marsalis acoustic album; Pine's virtuosity and fluency on tenor and soprano and admiration of John Coltrane run virtually parallel to Branford's acoustic pursuits (as things transpired later, Pine would also display the same renegade eclectic curiosity as the eldest Marsalis brother). In addition to his own tunes – including the screwball "A Raggamuffin and His Lance" – Pine explores Ornette Coleman's "Una Muy Bonita" with a touch of Coleman's terseness in his rhetoric, and does a dazzlingly swift turn on Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee." Ultimately, though, the music with these American musicians doesn't catch as much fire as Pine's albums with British sidemen did.

Pianist/Conductor Barenboim continues his 2020 Beethoven Journey with a complete recording of Piano Trios. "There is a lack of equality in this world. For only if everyone were equal there would be no conflicts", he says. Equal standing is also indispensable for the piano trios of Beethoven, whom he's always regarded as one of the most important composers. Performed w/ Michael Barenboim & Kian Soltani, who were shaped as concertmaster and principal cellist of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.

Composed in 1783, Thrice Betrothed, Never Wed was the young Cherubini’s fifth opera and his first opera buffa. While it echoes its era—Paisiello, Cimarosa, Haydn, and early Mozart—it displays an almost Rossinian rhythmic bite and a few harmonic touches that look forward to the dramatic masterpieces of Cherubini’s Paris years (Lodoiska, Medée, Les deux journées, Anacréon, the C-Minor Requiem). Despite decades-long exploration of Cherubini, I have never encountered the opera before; this claims to be its first recording. The plot is filled with the expected inanities: disguises, mistaken identities, and Commedia dell’arte shenanigans.

For his first album with Warner Classics, Lahav Shani conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in Symphony No. 7 and plays Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4: two pieces which come from Beethoven’s so-called “middle period”. The classical harmonic tension contributes to the drive of the music as much as the rhythmic propulsion. This music features a clarity of texture and, above all, a unity between the melodic motive and the accompaniment. Acclaimed for his “instant chemistry” with the orchestra, Lahav Shani is considered the shooting star amongst conductors – as Der Tagesspiegel puts it: “The young maestro is simply sensational”.

Dream Theater have announced Distant Memories, a new live album recorded in London back in February 2020. It’s due for release on November 27th. The album captures the band on tour in support of 2019’s Distance Over Time and the 20th anniversary of Metropolis Part 2 – Scenes From a Memory. The title Distant Memories can refer both to the album’s content and the fact that it seems so very long ago, despite the performances at the Apollo in London taking place right before the pandemic hit.

Recorded live in Rome before a polite audience - radio audiences always are - Current Conditions features what Enrico Pieranunzi has called "the trio of my heart", with Marc Johnson on bass and Joey Baron on drums.
It also marks something of a change of direction, ora at least a broadening of his concers away from the deep vein of Romantic melancholia which he's been mining. This was apparent from last year's Enrico Pieranunzi tribute Play Morricone on the same label, which showed a new-found exuberance. Most compositions are by Pieranunzi but there are also what I assume are two free improvvisations credited the three musicians, "Joey's Magic Tricks" and "Trio Reflections". Presented with these in a blidfold test, I don't think Pieranunzi would have been my first guess. Other pieces are more characteristic however.
