Mahalia Jackson, hailed as one of America's greatest voices, working for Columbia Records, for whom she made 15 albums. The Columbia albums, often with the backing of strings and choirs, had a much tighter, less improvisational feel than her earlier recordings, which exuded a raw power. In 1970 she's even released a pop arranged song collection, "What the World Needs Now".

Joyful, romantic sounds that stir the soul: that’s the overarching theme of Herb Alpert's ‘Music Vol. 1’, the trumpeter and composers’ new work. Alpert's passion for timeless melodies takes the listener on a voyage that spans genres and generations with surprising twists and turns. Always exploring and bursting with creativity, he teamed with GRAMMY-winning producer Jochem van der Saag (whose credits include Andrea Bocelli and Destiny's Child) for the first time, crafting ‘Music Vol. 1’ at Van Der Saag's home studio over the past year.

Eric Chenaux is a Toronto-based guitarist, songwriter, and sound sculptor; he is a key figure in the city's improv and indie music scene. His music is a tricky thing to classify. His endlessly inventive balladry is informed by jazz, improv, and folk, and is played out via his idiosyncratic electrified acoustic guitar playing and clear vocals. Despite the preconception that experimental music can be trying and dark, it feels affectionate and lush in this instance.

His life in the late-Soviet period was harsh and included expulsion from the Composers' Union which led to his withdrawal from participation in public life. This album brings together the two superlative works of Silvestrov's early maturity.

Love, drama and betrayal under the Sicilian sun: this ‘pasticcio’ of folk melodies and music by ‘learned’ composers was born of the love of Leonardo García Alarcón and the singers and musicians of the Cappella Mediterranea for Calabrian, Sicilian and Neapolitan songs dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. We hear music by Alessandro Scarlatti and Sigismondo d’India, both born in Palermo, as well as works from the extraordinarily rich collection of St John’s Co-Cathedral in Malta (notably by Vincenzo Tozzi). Leonardo García Alarcón even composed a five-part fugue on La canzone di Cecilia , associated with the heroine of the drama. The music was arranged by Quito Gato. This tribute to southern Italy by Cappella Mediterranea has triumphed on stage for years; now this recording immortalises it.

Jazz from The Pacific Northwest combines two previously unissued concert recordings from one of the greatest jazz drummers of all-time, Shelly Manne. The first recording features Monty Budwig on bass, Russ Freeman on piano, Stu Williamson on trumpet, and Herb Geller on flute and alto saxophone recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival on October 4, 1958. The second recording features Hampton Hawes on piano, Frank Strozier on flute and alto saxophone, Conte Condoli on trumpet and guest vocalist Ruth Price on two tracks recorded at the Penthouse jazz club in Seattle on September 7 and 15, 1966.
