In the late 1950s and early 1960s R&B stood for ‘rhythm and blues’ - a term associated with some of the most joyous and vibrant popular music ever made. More diverse than the blues, R&B was basically the forerunner of Soul music, and the black equivalent of rock ‘n’ roll: instrumentally energetic, with superb vocals delivered by heartfelt voices that had (mostly) learned to sing in gospel choirs. Here, a grand convergence of sound sorcerors. From the American Midwest comes The Art Ensemble Of Chicago (trumpeter Lester Bowie, saxophonists Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell, bassist Malachi Favors Maghostut, and percussionist Famoudou Don Moye), representing the pan-idiomatic forces and open mysteries nurturing the Jazz avant garde -and so much more- into the here and now. From the American Northeast comes guest Cecil Taylor, grandmaster of the acoustic piano and a principal purveyor of that very avant garde for a good half-century going strong. The result, this early 1990 tribute to/extension of the legacies established by the legendary Thelonious Monk, is a towering achievement.

Anyone familiar with Andrew Hill's music will find the cover to Andrew!!! a little bizarre, to say the least. Hill was one of the most intense and cerebral musicians on Blue Note's roster, incorporating avant-garde and modal techniques into his adventurous post-bop. The cover to Andrew!!! apparently is an attempt to humanize Hill - it's a soft-focus close-up of a smiling Andrew Hill, who looks more like a teen idol than a serious jazz musician, and the first-name title is adorned with no less than three exclamation marks and a subtitle, "The Music of Andrew Hill," which suggests that it's an album of romantic, easy-listening standards. It's not. Andrew!!! is just as adventurous and challenging as any of his other albums, which is to Hill's credit…

Giovanna d’Arco is based on Friedrich Schiller’s tragedy The Maid of Orleans and deals with the life of Joan of Arc. But Verdi and his librettist Temistocle Solera departed from both Schiller and historical fact by turning Joan’s father into the opera’s powerful antagonist. Ever since its first performance in Milan in 1845, Giovanna d’Arco has been admired and loved for its emotionally affecting arias and thrilling choral writing.

Recorded at London's O2 Indigo during the Stone Free Music Festival in 2017, this new release includes a full performance of Blue Öyster Cult's debut album, as well as 5 other tunes from the later catalog. Available on CD/DVD and Blu-ray with behind-the-scenes bonus video footage, and also will be available on 2-LP Vinyl.

The group's status as discharged G.I.'s informs some of spewed vitriol, but beyond that there's little connection to any trends or scenes, the Monks are true originals in a world of imitators, and that adds a layer of excitement to an already mind blowing listen.
