After dramatically altering the course of human evolution by making dozens of hot records with the John Kirby Sextet, Charlie Shavers went to work for Harry Lim's amazing Keynote label. The music made on June 8, 1944, is typical of the no-nonsense jam atmosphere that usually prevailed at Keynote. Fronting with Jonah Jones and Budd Johnson, and wonderfully supported by Johnny Guarnieri, Milt Hinton, and J.C. Heard, Shavers sautés his way through each four-minute performance. Edgar Sampson's "Blue Lou" is particularly spicy with its interplay between Hinton and Heard. "I Found a New Baby" is the hottest of all. A V-Disc jam tosses Shavers into the midst of a group of individuals from different stylistic backgrounds…

Pianist Hank Jones' first LP consists of six piano solos from 1947 and four trio numbers (with guitarist Johnny Smith and bassist Ray Brown) from 1953. Particularly on the unaccompanied solos, Jones shows off the influence of Art Tatum, while the trio cuts are more boppish and sometimes recall the King Cole Trio. Excellent music.

Stag-O-Lee present the first and second volume of the new limited edition series, Gunsmoke. The first two volumes were previously vinyl-only releases (STAGO 095LP, 2016/STAGO 098LP, 2017). This is a collection of oddball country weepers, moody rockabilly, and popcorn noir from the 1950s and early '60s. So turn out the lights, sit back and relax to the soundtrack from a jukebox in a ghost town. For best results: listen to after dark.

This trio date is dedicated to the music of Annette Peacock, former wife of both pianist Paul Bley and bassist Gary Peacock. While Bley is the undisputed leader on this date (as he has recorded many of these pieces before), it is flügelhorn and trumpet player Franz Koglmann who arranged them in such an exquisite manner. The majority of the pieces included here were originally composed as songs. They were vehicles for expressing the interior, haunted world that Ms. Peacock inhabits and featured her lilting, edgy voice, which slips and slithers through her deceptively simple melodies before erupting into a shriek of ecstasy or pain.

This compilation is highly recommended, if you are into the dreamy, ambient side of electronic music. Sometimes you can imagine yourself floating in deep space, sometimes you are lying in a meadow, as it where, and looking at clouds passing above. Just let your imagination fly, and this album will guide you. All Ambient Nation albums feature individual tracks from compelling artists and give you a nice overview of the current Belgian electronic music artists.

This album was recorded last summer when Waldron and his friends were invited to celebrate his birthday at Jazz Middelheim in Antwerp, Belgium, the bi-annual festival of Brtn Public Radio. His regular US bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Andrew Cyrille came over from New York. Jeanne Lee was only a short trainride away, in The Hague, Holland, where she teaches. Joe Henderson was flown in from San Francisco. Abbey Lincoln, who had performed with her own band the night before, stayed over to make an impromptu appearance.

Finisterre are an Italian progressive rock band that formed in Genoa in April 1993. Their music is an eclectic mix of styles and they have spawned a significant number of offshoots. The original line-up consisted of Fabio Zuffanti (bass, vocals), Stefano Marelli (guitars, vocals), Boris Valle (keyboards), Marco Cavani (drums) and Sergio Grace (flute). They released their self-titled debut album, widely regarded as a classic of modern Italian symphonic progressive music, in January 1995. Cavani and Grace subsequently quit the band during 1995. Along with their replacements, Francesca Biagini (flute) and Marcelo Mazzocchi (drums), Finisterre produced their second and arguably best album ''In Limine'' (1996). This is a radical and diverse work comprised of classical, jazz, folk, avant-garde and even electronic influences…

This double-CD set isn't a substitute for the four-CD box from Big Beat, but it does provide a slightly leaner and less-expensive way of running through the band's history. It's difficult to believe that a group whose recording history lasted just a little more than three full years could account for the 22 single A- and B-sides on disc one of this set, but that was the pace of the business in those days, and it wasn't unheard of for a band to get four or five singles out in a year…

When Bobby Hackett's band is in the house and presents a pretty tune at a relaxed tempo, the spirit within the song has a chance to climb out of its shell and perch for a few minutes over the front door like one of William Blake's pigmented angels. Hackett's sensitivity turns every ballad into a magical daydream.
