Whenever there is some type of event where the DJ is spinning old-school soul, funk, and disco - an event that could be taking place anywhere from Cherry Hill, NJ to Newcastle, England - one question that inevitably comes up a lot is "Whatever happened to?" You know, whatever happened to McFadden & Whitehead (sadly, both died in the 2000s), or whatever happened to Teena Marie? ("Lady T" came out with an album called Sapphire in 2006.) And if the DJ is playing crowd-pleasers like 1977's "Shame" or 1982's "Love Come Down," someone inevitably wonders what Evelyn "Champagne" King has been up to. King flew under the radar in the '90s and early 2000s, but admirers of the Bronx native's '70s and '80s hits will be glad to know that she is in generally good form on her 2007 comeback album Open Book.

This release presents the complete session pianist and composer Clare Fischer arranged for trumpeter Donald Byrd. It features Byrd, Fischer himself on piano, and a string and wind section. This amazing date marks the first time Fischer contributed all of the arrangements for a session. However, its release was postponed many years. As a bonus, we have added the complete LP Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill (Transition LP-17), which showcases the trumpeter in a quartet format.

C-melody saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer will always be most famous for the recordings that he made with cornetist Bix Beiderbecke but he also led a series of fine sessions after Bix had departed the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. This CD features Trumbauer leading a large combo filled with Paul Whiteman sidemen during 1929-30 and a nonet in 1931. While some of the numbers are a bit commercial and there are vocals by Smith Ballew, Art Jarrett and Trumbauer himself, there are also some fine jazz solos from the leader, cornetist Andy Secrest, violinist Joe Venuti and trombonist Bill Rank. Among the better tracks are "Manhattan Rag" (which has Hoagy Carmichael on piano), "Happy Feet," "Get Happy" and "Honeysuckle Rose."

Genre: Classical / Label: deutsche harmonia mundi

Dorothee Oberlinger's new album presents the rare baroque opera "Polifemo" by Giovanni Battista Bononcini (1670-1747). The renowned recorder player recorded this opera as conductor with her ensemble 1700 and outstanding soloists. "Polifemo" was first performed in 1702 in Lietzenburg Palace, later Charlottenburg Palace, the palace of Prussian Queen Sophie Charlotte. At that time Bononcini was the Queen's favourite composer. In "Polifemo" a one-eyed giant, a jealous sorceress and the goddess of love bring about miraculous transformations in the story based on Ovid's "Metamorphoses". The performance of "Polifemo" at the Potsdam Music Festival 2019 was highly praised:"The pretty, differentiated rhythmic music with its pleasing melodies in 20, sometimes short, sometimes very overflowing numbers is in the best hands with Dorothee Oberlinger and her powerfully colorful Ensemble 1700" (The world)

A 3CD box set contains 60 tracks offers the most complete overview of Blunstone's career ever. It's fair to say that there have been a number of compilations over the years. What makes this set so interesting is there are numerous tracks that you will either not have heard or not heard for a long time. Fabulous collection from the man with arguably the most beautiful singing voice in Britain. Perfect harmonies. Soft rock does not get any better than "Old and Wise" and "Ain't it funny?"

Art Pepper made a name for himself around Los Angeles in the '50s as a leading light in the style then known as West Coast jazz – a cool alternative to the hot hard bop being made in East Coast cities like New York and Philadelphia. Pepper never really fit the cool stereotype, however; he was too incendiary a soloist (influenced by Lester Young, perhaps, and Bird certainly), more inclined to inject overt anger and passion into his playing than contemporaries like Getz or Mulligan. By the time these sides were made in 1976, any residual coolness had been displaced by hot emotionalism and an almost manic intensity.

"Jubilee Concert in Buenos Aires": On the afternoon of 19 August 1950, a young boy in short trousers climbed the steps to the stage of the Sala Beyer in Buenos Aires to make his piano début. 50 years later, Daniel Barenboim returned “to the scene of the crime” to give an ecstatically received recital at Teatro Colón which will go down in history as one of the musical events of the 21st century.

Sphere's second LP focuses primarily on originals by members of the group, unlike their first album, which concentrated exclusively on the works of Thelonious Monk. The one Monk song is the infrequently heard "Played Twice"; they also add a relaxed yet solidly swinging interpretation of the old standard "If I Should Lose You." Kenny Barron contributed the Latin-flavored "El Sueño" and the turbocharged "Flight Path." Tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse (a veteran of nearly 11 years in Monk's quartet) wrote "Pumpkin's Delight," which is easily the most intricate chart of the session.
