Vibraphonist Mike Mainieri has never garnered the same attention as Gary Burton, five years his junior, despite being equally cutting edge. Mainieri was one of fusion's early progenitors: Journey Through an Electric Tube (Solid State, 1968) and White Elephant (Solid State, 1969) explored new ways to incorporate a rock aesthetic with jazz. But while Burton has settled into a more mainstream comfort zone in recent years, Mainieri continues to test new waters. Northern Lights teams him with the "Norwegian Posse"—a veritable who's who of the contemporary Norwegian scene. The result blends the groove and ambience of nu jazz with a somewhat more emphatic approach to soloing.

The Grammy award-winning pianist Daniel Barenboim, long known for his Mozart interpretations, turns his attention to Mozart’s piano sonatas, a body of work that, while forming the core of the pianist’s repertory, is not often heard in the concert hall. These sonatas showcase Mozart’s genius for the small-scale, and truly shine in Barenboim’s masterful rendering.

The music of Carl Nielsen holds a very special place for Danes, defining the nation’s musical voice for over a century and reflecting the soul of Denmark. Nielsen was a violinist from childhood, his early Sonata in G major having ‘a scent of Mozartian youth’, while the newly published Romance in G major was dedicated to his first teacher. Mature works include the Second Violin Sonata, ‘a work unparalleled in the sonata literature’, and the Prelude, Theme and Variations inspired by Bach’s Chaconne for solo violin. This collection represents the first ever recording of Nielsen’s complete music for violin solo or with piano.

Not only was Robert Fuchs an admired friend of Brahms but he nurtured a prodigious number of pupils, among whom were Enescu, Korngold, Mahler, Wolf, and Sibelius who called Fuchs a clever orchestrator, professional to his fingertips, and very happy as a composer. The three Violin Sonatas, composed over a 24-year period between 1877 and 1901, exemplify Fuchs superbly crafted and melodious grace, with soaring Romanticism spiced with occasional Hungarian colour, folkloric themes and vivacious finales.

Internationally acclaimed and award-winning conductor Fabrice Bollon has in recent years attracted attention as a composer with a keen ear for unique and unusual timbres. Your Voice Out of the Lamb is one of the most spectacular and virtuosic works written for recorders, ranging from the sub-bass to the miniature garkleinflötlein, also using live electronics for a variety of expanded effects. The exciting and dynamic Four Lessons of Darkness is the first ever concerto for the electric cello, and Dogmatic Pleasures is a set of short, virtuoso orchestral pieces filled with humour and irony.
