The life of a traveling blues musician isn't easy. The vocation is rife with loneliness, bad food, cheap hotels, and lack of sleep. Walter Trout is a survivor of that life (just barely). During the late 1960s and '70s, he worked the road with Big Mama Thorton, Joe Tex, and John Lee Hooker. In the 1980s, it was Canned Heat and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. He's led his own bands since 1990 and experienced cycles of triumph, tragedy, alcohol and narcotic addiction, and recovery from a near-fatal liver transplant that required two surgeries. Trout's dues are paid and then some. Ordinary Madness was produced by longtime collaborator Eric Corne and cut in analog at guitarist Robby Krieger's studio. Its many surprises reveal it to be unlike any other record in his large catalog.

Chamber Music is a collaboration between Ballake Sissoko, who plays the traditional kora, a lute-harp from Mali, and Vincent Segal, the French cellist who plays for the trip-hop band Bumcello. It is also, quite simply, one of the most elegant and beautiful recordings of world music in recent years. At a time when cross-cultural music has tended toward highly-caffeinated electric pop and dance music, Sissoke and Segal remind us that there is room and maybe even a need for a quieter, more refined world music. Both musicians have displayed an aptitude for defying expectations the list of trip-hop cellists is pretty short, after all. And Ballake Sissoko has become a familiar name on the world music scene through his work with American blues legend Taj Mahal and Italian minimalist Ludovico Einaudi, among others.

The Grammy award-winning pianist Daniel Barenboim, long known for his Mozart interpretations, turns his attention to Mozart’s piano sonatas, a body of work that, while forming the core of the pianist’s repertory, is not often heard in the concert hall. These sonatas showcase Mozart’s genius for the small-scale, and truly shine in Barenboim’s masterful rendering.

'Lagos Pepper Soup', Michael’s second solo release, is an integration of all of his diverse musical influences. He picked a core band of Terreon Gully, Aaron Parks, Etienne Stadwijk, and enlisted the talents of Angélique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves Music, Regina Carter, Joe Lovano, Laura Mvula, Lionel Loueke, Grégoire Maret, Becca Stevens, Brandee Younger, Robert Mitchell and Onaje Jefferson, alongside top studio arrangers David Metzger, Joseph Joubert and Jason Michael Webb to realize his vision of what he calls Cinematic Afrobeat. His own virtuoso melodic bass playing shines throughout’.

UK three CD set, the only Smokie compilation you'll ever need. Formed in Bradford, Yorkshire, Smokie rose to fame in the 1970s and found chart success with their signature glam-pop sound. This career compilation includes all of the group's biggest hits including 'Living Next Door To Alice', 'It's Your Life', ' Oh Carol', 'Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone' and 'Have You Ever Seen The Rain'. Disc One covers the period of 1975-1976 including classics tracks 'Don't Play Your Rock 'N' Roll To Me' and 'If You Think You Know How To Love Me' which both peaked at #3 in the UK singles chart. Disc Two opens with Smokie's international hit 'Living Next Door To Alice' which was a #1 hit in 7 countries. Other hits included on this disc include 'Oh Carol' and 'Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone'. Disc Three concludes the set with tracks from the end of Smokie's classic era, including the singles 'Take Good Care Of My Baby', 'Little Town Flirt' and 'Jet Lagged'.

One of the UKs finest saxophonists, and a member of Chick Corea’s legendary band, Tim Garland has taken the classic Stan Getz album with strings, Focus, from 1961 and created a reworking for our time. This is not a slavish recreation, or an attempt at nostalgia, but the result of a creative mind working in the spirit of the album, and with the legacy of a great artist. It’s an exercise in expressing the past in the present and the future.

Veteran tenor saxophonist George Garzone spent much of his life in jazz education, though he picked up his pace recording as a leader beginning in the mid-'90s. This European release issued by Stunt features Garzone with a masterful rhythm section including pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist Anders Christensen, and drummer Paul Motian. The ballad-oriented set primarily focuses on Garzone's lush originals, including the wistful "Farewell" and the mellow, Latin-tinged "Between Two Cities," a feature for his infectious soprano sax.

On this interesting but unfortunately out of print LP, the immortal drummer Elvin Jones teams up with four advanced but very different improvisers: Dave Liebman (doubling on soprano and flute), cornetist Terumasa Hino, pianist Kenny Kirkland and bassist George Mraz. Other than a lyrical version of "Never Let Me Go," the songs were contributed by either Jones ("Three Card Molly") or Liebman, whose "Day and Night" is not surprisingly based on the chord changes of "Night and Day." The solos are unpredictable but logical, and the blend between the lyrical Hino and Liebman is appealing.
