    Label: SoulMusic Records (UK) | Cat.# SMCR 25096 | Released: 2013-05-21 (1971/1973)

Two of Nancy Wilson's more fascinating, if less commercially successful '70s sets - 1971's Kaleidoscope and 1973's I Know I Love Him - are reissued on this release from David Nathan's Soul Music label. Kaleidoscope features knockout versions of "If I Were Your Woman," popularized by Gladys Knight & the Pips, and Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine." On the later album, Wilson is backed by the Crusaders with arranging and conducting from Don Sebesky. It's a deep gem - laid-back but resonant late-night listening for serious fans of any of the involved. A. Scott Galloway provides typically detailed liner notes packed with information and engaging analysis.

The debut album by West London songwriter Will Westerman is full of supremely crafted songs about moral, political, and ethical grey areas. Recorded alongside his close friend and producer Nathan Jenkins (aka Bullion) in Portugal, they find Westerman attempting to resolve external issues by looking inward. Like a young Peter Gabriel in a late capitalist world, Westerman’s music falls somewhere between artful soft rock and confessional electronic pop. Already getting attention of high end tastemaker media from both sides of the Atlantic, Westerman’s unique sound and aesthetic Is encapsulated in this exquisite debut longplayer.

The soulful and gorgeous collection – produced by John Leventhal (Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello) and recorded in his Manhattan home studio – follows Jarosz’s Grammy-winning 2016 release Undercurrent (Rounder). World On The Ground is a collection of stories both real and imagined exploring the tension and inertia of small-town living. Jarosz, a native of Wimberley, TX (pop. 2,626) and current NYC resident, explores the desire for escape set against the ease of staying put. The album is populated by sensitive souls, aimless wanderers, and back-porch daydreamers. Their stories are illuminated by the album’s spacious yet intricate arrangements and Jarosz’s captivating voice and richly detailed songwriting. With the scope of a novel and a sound inspired by classic Texas songwriting, World On The Ground paints a portrait that exists outside of time.

William Christie triumphs; nobody does French Baroque with an Italian accent better and with his ensemble Les Arts Flos, he has made some of the finest recordings of French baroque music, including these French cantatas by André Campra (1660-1744). Campra is usually regarded as the most important French composer between Lully and Rameau and a transitional figure in French opera. Curiously, many of the musicans of Les Arts Florissants back in 1986 were American or British: violinist John Holloway, flautist Robert Claire, theorbist Stephen Stubbs, and the superlative American soprano Jill Feldman. However, to hear quintessential French vocal technique, listen to Dominique Visse singing the cantata 'La Dispute de l'Amour et de l'Hymen.' Jean-François Gardeil, the baritone on this CD, also contributes a pure French inflection to the performance. Recorded in 1986, in Arles.

Despite not having had a hit since the late '90s, Mötley Crüe remained impossible to ignore. Tommy Lee's high-profile romances, court dates, and television appearances – he got his own reality show – kept the group theoretically active well past their creative due date, and Vince Neil appeared on VH1's Surreal Life, where he shed tears with MC Hammer and endured a celebrity "makeover" complete with a face-lift, while the rest of the band chronicled their decadent heydays in the best-selling tell-all book The Dirt…

For it was then that Rodgers and Hammerstein joined forces for the first time and wrote the memorable "Oklahoma." What happened after "Oklahoma" is history - and what a history it is! "Carousel", "South Pacific", "The King and I" were among the hits that followed, and now with "Flower Drum Song" add another triumph to the string of successes this team has contributed to the American musical scene.

More than a decade after scoring with the classic R&B instrumental "Honky Tonk," Bill Doggett teamed with producer James Brown to create "Honky Tonk Popcorn," a remarkably vital and relentlessly funky comeback effort on par with anything bearing the JB seal of approval. Doggett's laid-back, soulful organ fits perfectly within the context of Brown's dynamic funk arrangements. "Honky Tonk" is reborn as a ferocious groover, while "Honky Tonk Popcorn" invents the song yet again, this time with a galvanizing guitar lead. Covers of Edwin Starr's "Twenty Five Miles" and Otis Redding's "Mr. Pitiful" are no less incendiary, but what's most surprising is the energy of Doggett's new original material: "Mad" benefits from a monster drum break and a fiery saxophone solo, while the slow-burning "After Lunch" is as smooth and creamy as its title suggests.

Tim Berne (alto and baritone saxes) has been at the forefront of progressive jazz since the early '80s. On this release, the artist regroups with longtime musical associates Marc Ducret (electric guitar) and Tom Rainey (drums) for a truly mesmerizing set that rings with ominous overtones and intricately constructed fabrics of sound. Over the years, Rainey and Ducret have supported Berne-led dates, and here the trio pursues a fire and brimstone approach that packs a walloping punch. On pieces such as "Bobby Reconte une Histoire" and "Dialectes," the band melds shuffle grooves with complex unison choruses and linearly devised progressions amid slight shifts in strategy.

Free electron of African music, the Zairian Lokua Kanza, before recording this album in 1993, already had a great musical experience. From 1980, he was the guitarist of a great Zairian star: Queen Abeti. In 1982, he made a stopover in Ivory Coast before arriving in France in 1984 to go to his jazz ranges at C.I.M, the famous Parisian school. Then the meetings accumulate, Ray Lema (with whom he sings until 1988), Papa Wemba, Sixun (he is a backing singer on the group's albums), Claude Nougaro, and finally, in 1990, he becomes the singer of Manu Dibango until 1993 and this eponymous debut album.

In Anton Bruckner’s 7th Symphony, the listener encounters a music characterized by great spaciousness and profound solemnity, a music which speaks of grief and lamentation, but also of their transcendence. With its monumental architecture and intensity of sound, the symphony has moved listeners ever since its triumphal premiere in 1884. The Guardian calls Daniel Barenboim’s London interpretation “Tremendous … Barenboim and the Staatskapelle seem to have this work in their systems, and the overall impression was of music unfolding organically at its own pace rather than of a work being self-consciously interpreted or led.”

A sextet, Aurra featured the vocals of Starlena Young and Curt Jones. Originally released in 1981, none of the set's nine cuts come in under four minutes, but then there are no nine-minute workouts either. The reggae-influenced "Kingston Lady" and their disjointed, disco hit "Are You Single" are the most memorable selections. Every song is pleasant, but often indistinguishable from the rest; if your mind wanders you have to consult the track listing to check what tune is playing and which one you just heard.
