It's evident from the opening pair of Latin-flavored performances that Back on the Scene is one of Bennie Green's most diverse efforts. Green's warm, supple tone and fondness for swinging, bop-influenced mainstream jazz and jump blues hasn't disappeared; he's just found new facets in his style. The infectious Latin rhythms on Cole Porter's "I Love You" and "Melba's Mood" are welcome, as is "You're Mine You," which showcases Green's sensitive ballad style. Reviving the standard "Just Friends" emphasizes the trombonist's ties to big band and bop, particularly through tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse's strong solos. The jumping "Bennie Plays the Blues" and "Green Street" are also terrific, finding Green, Rouse and pianist Joe Knight trading full-bodied solos. Even with this vast array of styles, Back on the Scene retains all the good-natured spirit and humor of his earlier Prestige albums.

This is one of Freddie Hubbard's more obscure sessions of the 1960s. Actually, it was originally led by the forgotten trombonist Willie Wilson (who died in 1963). The 23-year-old trumpeter is teamed with Wilson, baritonist Pepper Adams, and the Duke Pearson Trio (with bassist Thomas Howard and drummer Lex Humphries) for originals by Wilson, Pearson, Adams, Donald Byrd, and Tommy Flanagan in addition to two standards that feature the trombonist. This is an excellent hard bop date and well worth picking up by straight-ahead jazz fans.

Working with former Prince sideman David Z, Leo Kottke comes up with one of his most unusual records with Standing in My Shoes. David Z doesn't necessarily bring Kottke toward funk, but the spare rhythm section gives the guitarist a stronger sense of groove than ever before, and Kottke really shines in such a setting. His solos are loose and swinging, and even his trio of vocal numbers have a charming, carefree quality. Standing in My Shoes does bog down occasionally, particularly when the execution is more compelling than the material, but on the whole, it is one of his more fascinating records of the '90s.

No matter how long they’ve been out of the spotlight, nobody should ever have underestimated the hitmaking machine known as the Black Eyed Peas. Putting aside 2018’s MASTERS OF THE SUN VOL. 1—a low-key project that revisited the group’s hip-hop roots without facing the commercial pressure of following up 2010’s presumed farewell The Beginning—this multilingual comeback effort revives their maximalist dance-floor appeal with some help from a fresh set of contemporary stars. With Fergie out of the picture, the majority of the vocal guests here come from Latin America, dutifully representing the reggaetón and Spanish-language pop boom of the moment. The massively successful throwback single “RITMO (Bad Boys for Life)” aligns them with global superstar J Balvin, while Dominican dembow sensation El Alfa brings his signature energy to the throbbing “NO MAÑANA”.

On June 6, 2014, Dave Matthews Band returned to the state of Maine for the first time since 1997.
