Lorna Windsor’s selection of eight 20th and 21st-century composers highlights how the voice incarnates different expressive forms more than any instrument. Left naked in its primeval state, the voice leads each composer to rediscover his personal voice, unfettered by convention. Six of the eight composers represented here were born within the same five years, from 1926 (Kurtág and Feldman) to 1931 (Bussotti, Kagel), in 1929 Pousseur, in 1930 De Pablo.

Alfredo Casella certainly was the most ‘European’ composer of the famous “eighties generation”: he arrived in Paris as a piano student then as a concert artist, then he fully lived the varied cultural movement that filled the French capital in the early twentieth century where music, painting, dance and poetry represented the main trends of the continent. The songs for voice and piano constitute one of the most sensitive means of showing how Casella managed to deal with a culture that placed the mélodie in the forefront, by surrounding it with the subtle reverberation emitted by the intertwining of music and poetry, over the background of a social custom that resounded with precious literary streaks. The voice of Lorna Windsor, accompanied by the piano by Raffaele Cortesi, reveals in all its nuances these compositions, belonging to the period when Casella was staying in the stimulating cultural forge of a Paris at the top of its social and artistic importance.

The fifth installment of Classics' Art Tatum story contains 24 piano solos that showcase the musician as the one-man band he was. These are breathtaking studio recordings made for Captiol and Columbia and also live performances recorded at the "Just Jazz" concerts staged at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. While only one Tatum original is included, "Tatum-Pole Boogie," he mainly tackles standards like "Willow Weep for Me," "Someone to Watch over Me," "My Heart Stood Still," and "Makin Whoopee."

Brainfeeder kingpin Flying Lotus has a talent for stargazing. The label's ranks include jazz fusionists (Thundercat, Austin Peralta), psych-rap futurists (Samiyam, Teebs), and the endearingly inscrutable (Matthewdavid) existing together in dazzling constellation. But when Baths signed to Anticon, Brainfeeder lost their experimental pop artist, the kind of producer who could marry head-swiveling beats to ghostly vocals.
Consider that niche filled. Lapalux, aka Stuart Howard, makes a similar type of sparkling deconstructed pop. He fits the Brainfeeder aesthetic perfectly, as he likes to envision his songs as aural paintings– a visual tie-in obviously appealing to a synaesthete like FlyLo. Lapalux's snares first started snapping on his remix of Thundercat's "For Love I Come"…

Isobar is a new progressive rock band based in San Jose, California. Their debut is comprised of all-instrumental, intricately-crafted songs, covering a wide range of musical territory. Jim Anderson (bass), Malcolm Smith (guitars) and Marc Spooner (keyboards) were members prog band Metaphor. Here they are joined by Mattias Olsson on drums (Änglagård, White Willow, Molesome, and others.).
