Serenade to a Soul Sister is the happy marriage of jazz's funkiest pianist (Horace Silver) with its most soulful saxman (Stanley Turrentine). Throw in a fabulously underrated trumpeter with a big fat tone (Charles Tolliver) and you've got one of the best soul-jazz classics of the 1960s. Serenade features six original compositions by Silver, and every one is a gem. One, however, is shinier than the rest. The album's opener, "Psychedelic Sally," is one of the catchiest, most joyful jazz tunes ever recorded.

The project began in discussions with Ryan Keberle about what more we could do to address the changes towards justice we both see as crucial to our country and our society. Racial justice. Climate justice. Voting justice. Gender justice. Scientific justice. And now the push for science to begin to push back the virus so we can all gather together again. We decided we could make music devoted to civic engagement and speaking out on these issues. And in an election year, we saw the band touring in swing states around the country. Without any touring, those plans changed. But I was determined to follow through on the creative vision for the project and began writing in earnest in April 2020.

Ludwig Van Beethoven is present in the musical formation and career of the two musicians: in recordings, CDs, classes, concerts, arrangements, memories and transcriptions. But it is the three duets for clarinet and bassoon WoO 27 that make up the album's repertoire. The works were transcribed by the two musicians for violin and cello. The CD also includes the original piece for viola and cello Eyeglasses WoO 32, known as the “Eyeglasses Duo”.

Featured on this CD is Gonzalo Rubalcaba's Grupo Projecto, a Cuban septet with trumpeter Reinaldo Meliani, Rafael Carrasco on tenor and flute, trumpeter Lazaro Cruz, bassist Felipe Cabbera, drummer Horacio Hernandez, and percussionist Roberto Vizcaino. Rubalcaba pays tribute to the music of his father's era, in the style that was popular in Cuba in the 1950s. Five of the six selections are by the artist, but he often quotes extensively from the music of the time period, plus, on "Recordando a Tschaikowsky," classical themes. The colorful arrangements, three skillful horns, and Rubalcaba's creative playing make this a particularly delightful release.

Part of the Bele Belle Jazz Club series, this collection of three Gonzalo Rubalcaba sessions from 1986 and 1987 finds the pianist in three different settings: electric septet, trio, and solo. The two electric septet session are great in so far as they showcase Rubalcaba's gloriously extended harmonic style with a group., but the electric bass and synths on these two cuts sound just awful. The trio accounts for one selection, and it is full of the fluid, high melodic style Rubalcaba is known for with a rhythm section. It is on the solo cuts where Rubalcaba's now-trademark rhythmic invention is showcased brilliantly; his use of space, and dynamic and harmonic invention, is singular here, playing the jazz tradition against the folk music of his native Cuba on eight selections. It is for these – with their deep lyricism, and contrapuntal engagements – that the album is worth the price.

Stereo sound innovator and early godfather of the lounge music revolution, Enoch Light's Persuasive Percussion albums set the tone for an entire era of sophisticated partying, and also employed recording techniques that were groundbreaking in their time and would still sound fresh decades later. Following the success of those albums came volume upon volume of the Provocative Percussion spin-off series, and Provocative Percussion Vols. 3 & 4 collects 24 loungy instrumental tracks somewhere between the big-band sound and the increasingly groovy living stereo sound that Light pioneered, including takes on standard hits like "The Look of Love" and "On the Street Where You Live."

Thought by many to be among the most revolutionary albums in jazz history, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew solidified the genre known as jazz-rock fusion. The original double LP included only six cuts and featured up to 12 musicians at any given time, some of whom were already established while others would become high-profile players later, Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Airto, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Don Alias, Bennie Maupin, Larry Young, and Lenny White among them. Originally thought to be a series of long jams locked into grooves around keyboard, bass, or guitar vamps, Bitches Brew is actually a recording that producer Teo Macero assembled from various jams and takes by razor blade, splice to splice, section to section.

Wayne Shorter was at the peak of his creative powers when he recorded Schizophrenia in the spring of 1967. Assembling a sextet that featured two of his Miles Davis bandmates (pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Ron Carter), trombonist Curtis Fuller, alto saxophonist/flautist James Spaulding and drummer Joe Chambers, Shorter found a band that was capable of conveying his musical "schizophrenia," which means that this is a band that can play straight just as well as they can stretch the limits of jazz.

Due to the similar instrumentation and the free jazz originals by Fred Hess, the quartet on Crossed Paths is a bit reminiscent of Ornette Coleman's early groups. As with Ornette, the mood of the songs serves as the basis for the improvising rather than any set chord patterns. What is different is that Fred Hess is an expressive tenor-saxophonist with his own style (rather than copying Coleman or Dewey Redman) and trumpeter Ron Miles is also quite individual, having more technique than Don Cherry. With bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Matt Wilson contributing stimulating support and interaction, Hess and Miles are both heard in top form, whether blending in ensembles or making individual statements in this explorative but very coherent outing.

A young band from Strasbourg, France, drawing on 30 years of alternative French rock/prog tradition. Obviously inspired by Gong and Frank Zappa - Studio Tan period - , they embrace elements as diverse as trip-hop and jazz-funk, as well as African, Latino and other cultural World musics. Quintessentially French, and also akin to the Canterbury and RIO "Rock In Opposition" fields, Camembert cheekily call their music "Cheese Rock". The band is articulated around very original instruments such as Harp, Xylophone and Vibraphone. The band's aim is to abolish frontiers between musical styles by including some world music arrangements. The best definition of their music heard in the press as the meeting between Henry Cow and Herbie Hancock for the writing of a blaxploitation movie soundtrack.
