A really lyrical set from trumpeter Marcus Printup – done in close collaboration with harpist (and wife) Riza Printup – a player who gives the record a really unique sort of sound! Riza doesn't pluck her instrument as much as other jazz harpists – such as Dorothy Ashby – and instead, she often uses the harp to bring these rich waves of sound to the album – augmenting sounds from Printup's trumpet, and the bass of Ben Williams and drums of EJ Strickland – creating a quality that's really fresh, and which seems to suit all the warm tones of Marcus' horn in a really great way. Things are never cheesy at all, but hit this evocative sound that really goes beyond any expectations you might have.

Elixir is the first album Danish percussionist Marilyn Mazur has recorded as a leader for ECM in 14 years. It is an interesting number for Mazur, because she has also spent 14 years as a member of saxophonist Jan Garbarek's recording and touring ensembles. He appears on about half of Elixir as Mazur's only collaborator (apart from producer Manfred Eicher). That said, the solo pieces are the first remarkable aspect of this set. When Mazur works alone, her pieces defy everything we think we know about solo percussion recordings: there is a warmth and directness in these proceedings that is songlike rather than merely hypnotic or virtuosic.

Philip Catherine - the South German Newspaper in Munich just recently wrote that he “plays things that cannot be heard by any other guitarist in the world today”. His partner on the bass, Martin Wind, is one of only a few Germans who made it in New York. Both are aesthetes that love melodic jazz with Swing roots. Without any haste or superficial virtuosity, but instead with complete mutual trust they find the ideal tone, the right timbre for each note, lining up sound and space perfectly. A meeting of generations marked by harmony and respect.

Black Metal | Label : Moonfog Productions

Rebel Extravaganza is the fourth studio album by Norwegian black metal band Satyricon. It was released in 1999, through Moonfog Productions. It was the dawn of a new millennium – and even more so for black metal pioneers Satyricon – who were poised for possibly the most groundbreaking evolution in their career. After the release of genre milestone, Nemesis Divina (1996), Satyr and Frost retreated for three years, only to return in the fall of 1999 in absolutely mindbending shape. Rebel Extravaganza proved to be more than aptly titled and tore down any and all genre boundaries with progressive ten-minute opener ‘Tied in Bronze Chains‘. Backed by stunning guest appearances by genre luminaries like Fenriz (Darkthrone) and Snorre Ruch (Thorns), the Norwegians unleashed a revolutionary and experimental masterpiece that combined frantic black metal with industrial elements, prog, synthesizers and mind-boggling time signatures. The album became the main inspiration for a myriad of upcoming experimental black metal acts and the birth of a new Satyricon era.

The selections contained in the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble's fine Blueprints are wonderfully reminiscent of a musical recipe that simmers slowly and then bursts into a fiery buffet. This is a marvelously entertaining offering by a group of outstanding musicians, writers and arrangers. Forget the designations "Latin" and "jazz." This is outstanding, high-energy music. The recipe here is exclusively spicy Latin with wonderful, generous dollops of inventive, hard jazz playing across the board. While the Latin (and one reggae) grooves might sound familiar, it's the playing and exciting soloing over those rhythmic/harmonic structural underpinnings that blow white-hot. There's an air of machismo that runs throughout Blueprints from note one…

In a sense, it's unfair to rate Koobas entirely by this, their only LP, because they were already in the process of calling it quits as a group when they cut it late in 1968; indeed, it's likely that if they'd thought they would have a possible future, a couple tracks that are here might never have seen the light of day. That said, Koobas is a good document of its time: Its three best songs, "Royston Rose," "Barricades," and "Gold Leaf Tree" are resplendent in rippling guitar parts, lots of fuzz-tone, searing breaks that sound like George Harrison's or Tony Hicks' playing pumped up by a few hundred amps, and drum patterns lifted right out of "Rain" and a dozen equally impressive psychedelic tracks, and some very pretty singing.
