Alongside Paul Mauriat, Raymond Lefèvre and Franck Pourcel, Caravelli (real name: Claude Vasori) was one of France's most popular musical exports, his light orchestral albums selling in their millions around the world. But whereas the classical influence was more pronounced in the music of Mauriat and Lefèvre particularly, the Caravelli sound instead leaned in favour of Latin and jazz, a reflection of his great liking for those styles. This Vocalion's reissue features pair of Caravelli's album - Caravelli At San Remo (1967) and J'aime (1966).

Kankou Kouyate is the niece of the N’Goni genius Bassekou Kouyate and was born into one of the most respected Griot families in Mali; growing up surrounded with music, descendent from generations of the finest N’goni players in the country, she became the music student of her uncle Cheick Oumar Diabaté at the age of ten.

Reuben "Ruby" Braff was an American jazz trumpeter and cornetist. Jack Teagarden was once asked about him on the Gary Moore TV show and described Ruby as "the Ivy League Louis Armstrong". The Best of Braff is a reissue of a Bethlehem collection that featured highlights from two ten-inch albums, A Ruby Braff Omnibus and Holiday in Braff, which is also released as Adoration of the Melody. Braff was at the beginning of his career as a leader here, yet he was already playing with ease, as these 12 songs illustrate. He may have gained greater popularity in the years following these recordings, but these remain among his finest waxings – and this is a nice way to acquire them.

This themed album from Quincy Jones and his orchestra contains songs from around the world, as the title suggests. "Around the World" was aimed at fans who like their quality big band music easy on the ear, for though there is some nice soloing by Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Sahib Shihab and Benny Bailey, these are primarily lushly voiced atmospheric arrangements delivered by a brilliant, airy and swinging band. Released in 1961, the LP includes several original numbers and a handful of standards. Whether catering for listeners or dancers, Quincy Jones would have it no other way.

The second instalment from London Odense Ensemble digs deeper into the group’s vision of what modern psychedelic jazz should sound like. Cut from the same sessions as Jaiyede Sessions vol. 1, released last summer, vol. 2 presents a more nuanced approach to the material. On this set the ensemble focuses on shorter, layered pieces – travelling from deep spiritual jazz grooves to gorgeous free-flowing minimalism to full-on acid jazz. There’s echo-drenched flutes being absorbed into layers of analog synth pads and guitars, bossa beats and double bass sequences merging with electronics. It’s an intoxicating mélange of sounds and styles, spanning wide temporal and geographical distances.

Damon Albarn is an English musician, singer, songwriter, composer and record producer. He is the lead singer of the British rock band Blur and co-founder, vocalist, instrumentalist, and principal songwriter of the virtual band Gorillaz. "Dr Dee" is a soundtrack for "Dr Dee: An English Opera". This 18 track work inspired by the life of John Dee (1527-1608), mathematician, alchemist, philosopher and advisor to Elizabeth I. Described by Albarn as "strange pastoral folk," the music of Dr Dee is a fitting companion to the end of another Elizabethan age. The album combines Albarn's voice with early English choral and instrumentation alongside modern, West African and Renaissance sounds.

"New Eyes on Martin Luther" is an experiment based on Nils Landgren's relentless conviction that “music is music” and “nothing is impossible”. With those words serving as a motto, the three ensembles on this live album dive in without preconceptions. The traditional German folk song Die Gedanken sind frei is here performed with a percussive flute solo; Landgren’s smooth voice floating on top of a funky rhythm. Sometimes he joins Capella de la Torre with a trombone solo and when all play together it sounds as if the music was originally written with this in mind. It moves seamlessly between genres and conveys the sound of skilled musicians having fun.
