Prince-Bishop Carl’s musical taste was greatly influenced by the musicians of Emperor Leopold I’s Hofkapella in Vienna. The archives at Kroměříž often have unique copies of music by the court composers. In the early 1670s, Prince-Bishop Carl even began a personal correspondence with the then Vize-Hofkapellmeister, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer (c.1620/23-1680), a virtuoso violinist and, at that period, also responsible for much of the official court dance music. Schmelzer’s early reputation as violinist was based on the influence of his early printed collection, Sonatæ unarum fidium (1664), and his Sonata Quarta is the longest piece. The first section of this sonata is constructed on 52 repetitions of the descending major tetrachord in D.

A meditation on the beauty of nature and the fate of the planet, “This Rock We’re On: Imaginary Letters” is a multi-movement work by the acclaimed composer Mike Holober. Written for jazz orchestra, voice, cello, and percussion, it features art songs set for chamber ensemble that take the form of imaginary letters to or from selected “protagonists” – naturalist authors, artists, and activists who dedicated their lives to appreciating and protecting the earth we inhabit. Each of the vocal works is followed by an instrumental jazz orchestra piece that reflects upon the text of the letter. Recorded and premiered by the GRAMMY® nominated Gotham Jazz Orchestra in June 2023, a double album is scheduled for release on 14th of June 2024.

Fauré’s two cello sonatas are compact, beautifully written works whose musical language, with its many subtle changes of tonality and gift for melody, has been described as conveying ‘the power of tranquil thought’. Written in the summer of 1917, during the First World War, the neglected First Sonata begins with a troubled Allegro, followed by an eloquent Andante and a sparkling Finale. The C minor Andante of the Second Sonata has its origin in a Chant funèbre commissioned for the celebration in May 1921 of the centenary of the death of Napoleon.
