Georg Philipp Telemann was the most famous of all German composers during his lifetime and a master of all musical genres. Every piece in this album dates from his triumphant years in Hamburg, where he was the city’s music director. They are heard in exciting new arrangements reflecting Telemann’s own practice in transcribing his works for various instruments. The two Sonatinas come from the collection Neue Sonatinen of 1730–31, a rich source of material, while the Fantasias derive from the Fantasias for viola da gamba, with much polyphonic writing cast in galant style.

Heinz Holliger’s “dream opera” Lunea which was premiered, to great acclaim, at Opernhaus Zurich, interweaves strands from the life and mind of Nikolaus Franz Niembsch (1802-1850), the Hungarian-born Austrian poet who wrote under the name Nikolaus Lenau. Lenau’s last, fragmentary writings have fired Holliger’s imagination and led to the creation of an intricately inventive work with a marvellously evocative lead role for baritone Christian Gerhaher. Neue Zürcher Zeitung: “Here Gerhaher can display his full sensitivity in dealing with the finest nuances of language and bring to bear his almost unlimited spectrum of tonal-dynamic gradations in the intonation. The poet Lenau speaks most directly from the sounds and notes…”

Jean-Marie Leclair’s violin sonatas embody a stylistic fusion known as les goûts réunis in which the lyricism and the virtuosity of the Italian school are integrated with the dance idioms of French Baroque music. In this volume, the music reaches new heights of technical complexity in its filigree ornamentation and continuous multiple stopping while still incorporating much wistful beauty. In the Sonata in D major, however, Leclair’s ambition expands yet further, as he combines innate lyricism and rustic drones in a prototype concerto form.

Karl Kohn is represented on this impressive two-album set by all of his solo and chamber music for flute. Kohn writes that "my music since the early 1960’s has been firmly re-connected with the broader heritage of Western art music, either by specific and direct quotation or “parody,” or – prevailingly - by more oblique allusions to characteristics of past style." Though he has spent seven decades working in California, the 95 year old composer writes that "I am struck how it seems to reflect, first, my Viennese musical heritage, and then my training in a neo-classical tradition." The performances feature the American flute virtuoso, Rachel Rudich, the dedicatee of many of Kohn's works.

At the age of 71, Johnny Frigo finally had his debut as a leader on record, with the exception of an obscure effort in 1957. Although he had spent much of his career as a studio bassist, Frigo successfully switched full-time to his first love, the violin, and was immediately considered one of the top swing-based violinists. Joined by both Bucky and John Pizzarelli on guitars, either Ron Carter or Michael Moore on bass, and drummer Butch Miles, Frigo is in wonderful form on 14 standards, including "Pick Yourself Up," "Detour Ahead" (which he had co-written while with the Soft Winds in the late '40s), "Stompin' at the Savoy" and "The Song Is You." This recommended CD launched the Chesky label.

Records is a compilation album by American rock band Foreigner, released on November 29, 1982 to span the band's first four albums through 1981. Along with their sophomore effort, Double Vision, this album is the group's best-selling record. It has been certified 7x platinum. With the exceptions of "Head Games" and the live version of "Hot Blooded," all tracks on this album are the 45 RPM single versions (edited and/or mixed differently from their respective album counterparts).

After two studio records, an intensive media campaign for a large automobile company, a new perfume fragrance, and a successful tour and residency in Las Vegas, one would reason that Celine Dion is long overdue for yet another sabbatical after a rather intensive 18-month span. However, this is not to be the case. This live document of the Las Vegas show drives home the point that Celine is one of the most potent entertainers in adult contemporary music. A smattering of her greatest hits ("My Heart Will Go On," "Because You Loved Me," "It's All Coming Back to Me Now") is mixed with vocal standards (a rather enchanting rendition of Etta James' brilliant "At Last," "What a Wonderful World," "I've Got the World On a String"), bringing a balanced, well-conceived program that highlights the dynamics and versatility in Dion's voice.

Sir Andr s Schiff's remarkable new recording finds the great pianist reassessing interpretive approaches to Brahms in the inspired company of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Their collaboration in a series of concerts was widely acclaimed and led to them recapturing the experience at Abbey Road where it was recorded in December 2019. Schiff plays on a Blthner piano built around 1859, the year the D minor concerto premiered.
