7 years have passed since the release of my “Guitar Heroes” Album (with Tommy Emmanuel, Biréli Lagrène and Stochelo Rosenberg as guests). I always wanted to bring the concept of mixing gypsy swing classics and original compositions with titles from other musical genres (pop, latin, western swing, etc.) to stage. I have managed to record 4 concerts over the past few years, of which the long-awaited LIVE CD with a selection of the different performances is finally available. In addition to my trio, Biréli Lagrène and Stochelo Rosenberg are on board again. Richard Smith and Olli Soikkeli could be won as additional guests.

Swedish Patrik Komorowski, who lives in Åland, is not one of the best-known pianists in the Nordic countries, but Glass's etudes do not require star-class technology, as the young Glass composed them for himself. The album’s etudes and other individual tracks are actually a version of Bach’s prelude in C major: the pattern repeats, the chord changes. The changes are square and the processes are jerky or obvious, but at times some natural aroma of music moves even my minimalist soul. The violent swirling of the third etude and the sincere simplicity of the eighth etude are like cubist graphic versions of romantic oil paintings, and as such are refreshing.

There are a few movie and soundtrack pairings that represent the wild 1980s. None more so than Top Gun (Footloose and Pretty in Pink are also strong contenders.) John Barry's musical sixth sense is legendary. Though he eschewed the wishes of director Sydney Pollack to score Out of Africa with indigenous tribal sounds (and garnered an Academy Award in the process), it wasn't from lack of musical range, as Barry had previously demonstrated so effectively on this score. The composer's work for the gritty World War II Japanese POW camp drama features a jaunty, if typically Barry-idiosyncratic, march and a string-dominated title theme unusual for the genre. The composer infuses his distinctively adventurous arranging skills with percussive elements that give the music a sense of place. It's a score that cuts against expectations and traditions in much the same way as Hans Zimmer's score for The Thin Red Line would 30 years later.

With Wolstenholme's keyboards pushed back in the mix, and strangely missing the harmonies that enriched their earlier work, Octoberon is something of a departure for the band. While Wolstenholme's stately "Ra" shows a dabbling in mysticism and the soaring sound of their previous work, most of the album is a strangely glum affair…
