Most folks point to Badfinger as the greatest power pop band of all time. But, with four accomplished songwriters in Tom Evans, Mike Gibbins, Pete Ham, and Joey Molland, and the creative assistance and imprimatur of The Beatles, Badfinger should have been bigger stars than they were. Their four albums for The Beatles’ Apple label get most of the attention, and understandably so, with hits like “Come and Get It,” “No Matter What,” “Day by Day,” and “Baby Blue.”

For over 15 years The Old Grey Whistle Test graced British television screens and would go on to become one of the most incredibly influential music programmes. From its premiere in 1971, through to its finale in 1988, the BBC show hosted countless performances from a number of seminal artists. A remarkable appearance would often help propel an artist from being a mere unknown to a household name.

One of two solo stars to spring from the ashes of the '70s all-girl hard rock band the Runaways, Lita Ford has long been a more frustrating, contradictory proposition for critics than former colleague Joan Jett. Ford is subtly feminist in her musical approach, displaying guitar heroics on the level of any male metal hero; the mere fact of her existence in the otherwise testosterone-driven heavy metal genre has made her a hero to some, but her persona has often been criticized as calculated to appeal to male adolescent sexual fantasies, simply embodying the standard wild-girl stereotypes of many male metal artists' lyrics.

The Flirts were a Menudo-like creation devised by Hi-NRG mogul Bobby Orlando. This bubbly female trio sang his songs while he performed most of the instrumentation and kept the girls on the album sleeves looking young. The ambitious New York producer released several Flirts records on his independent O Records label, which shot out a ridiculous amount of wax in the early '80s..

Striptease Review by Richie Unterberger
Following the usual formula for major Hollywood releases of the mid-'90s, this mixes golden oldies (by Spencer Davis, the Soul Survivors, Booker T. & the MG's, and the Miracles) with material of more recent vintage by Eurythmics, Blondie, Billy Idol, Prince, Joan Jett, and Billy Ocean, throwing in a non-rock pop ballad by Dean Martin for variety.

A debut on CD for the American Decca legacy of Ruth Slenczynska, a prodigious Romantic-age keyboard lioness. The biography for her Wigmore Hall recital in March 1957 claimed that the 32-year-old Ruth Slenczynska had given 1600 concerts. Scarcely believably, perhaps, but no less so than other elements of her extraordinary life story - making her public debut at the age of four, under the instruction of a tyrannical and abusive father, playing a Mozart concerto at the Salle Pleyel in Paris just three years later, attracting the admiration and tutelage of Cortot and Rachmaninov, apparently burnt out before adulthood.

The album also topped the KTUH's charts on the week of 29 September 1980.

"No Night So Long is a 1980 album by the vocalist Dionne Warwick. It was her second album for the Arista label (originally issued as # AL 9526). The album was recorded during the spring of 1980 and was released that July. It has sold over 500,000 copies in the US alone. The album's title track, "No Night So Long" was written by Richard Kerr and Will Jennings, the same team that wrote Warwick's 1979 comeback hit "I'll Never Love This Way Again". Isaac Hayes and Adrienne Anderson contributed another song, "We Never Said Goodbye" (the duo had provided Warwick with "Deja Vu" in 1979 from her previous album "Dionne"). The title track is one of two U.S. charting songs from the album, reaching #23. The other hit, "Easy Love," peaked at #62. Both songs were also hits on the Adult Contemporary chart. "Easy Love" peaked at #12 and "No Night So Long" spent three weeks at #1. This album was reissued on CD by Nippon/Phonogram-Arista in Japan in 1986, but only 500 copies were pressed.

Bon Jovi had perfected a formula for hard pop/rock by the time of New Jersey, concentrating on singalong choruses sung over and over again, frequently by a rough, extensively overdubbed chorus, producing an effect not unlike what these songs sounded like in the arenas and stadiums where they were most often heard…

Motown's "The Best of Thelma Houston" covers her late-'70s/early-'80s output for the label, including her hit cover of "Don't Leave Me This Way." A few other covers, including "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Me and Bobby McGee," hint at Houston's range as an interpreter; originals like "If It's the Last Thing I Do," "I Want to Go Back There Again," and "Stealin' in the Name of the Lord" show her finesse with lush ballads, quintessential Motown, and gospel-inflected pop, respectively. Along with "Don't Leave Me This Way," tracks such as "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning," "Love Machine," and "I'm Here Again" reflect Houston's sophisticated but fiery take on disco. While the Spectrum collection has a slightly grittier edge to it, this compilation does a fine job of showing the breadth and depth of her Motown work.

There are few funeral doom bands out there that manage to express sorrow and despair in such a majestic and beautiful manner as Finland's Shape Of Despair. The band’s latest full-length is a product of their environment, enveloping the listener in cold, eternal darkness like a lonely Finnish winter. And much like the long, funereal winters of their homeland, the atmosphere in ‘Return to the Void’ is bleak but ethereal. The funeral doom icons do not merely offer a soundtrack to one’s agony, but also demonstrate the beauty that can often be found in misery.

Scottish singer Maggie Reilly’s rich multi-octave voice recalls the spine-tingling operatics of Kate Bush, and works equally well on traditional folk songs, bluesy originals, and the hybrid Celtic-pop numbers that she is especially fond of. This is her 2000 album, and is heavy on heartfelt ballads tinged with electronica (“Talking to Myself,” “Reunion”).

Dimitri Mitropoulos (1896-1960) was a Greek conductor who came to America in the 1930s and made many recordings with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Like Wilhelm Furtwangler of Arturo Toscanini, Mitropoulos' height of popularity came just before the advent of modern sound technology, so that many of Mitropoulos' finest recordings are marred by distortion and background noises that may make those recordings practically un-listenable to some classical music enthusiasts (although the new Sony Mitropoulos set has advertised that most of those very rough recordings have been "remastered").
