Short Stories is the debut album by Jon and Vangelis, the collaborative effort between Jon Anderson of the prog rock band Yes and electronic music pioneer Vangelis. This was not the first time that the two had worked together: Vangelis had auditioned to be Rick Wakeman's replacement in Yes in 1974, but the role was given to Patrick Moraz. In 1975, Jon Anderson sang on "So Long Ago So Clear" from Heaven and Hell.

This 2 CD-set presents two aspects of Purcell's music: religious music and instrumental music. Let's start by the first CD. It includes magnificent anthems for the Church for soloists, choir, and orchestra. The first track to open the CD, "Rejoice in the Lord alway", is probably one of Purcell's most famous anthem. The beautiful introduction (sometimes known as the Bell Anthem) prepares the entry of the two countertenors who expose the melody, intoned by the choir later. As with Purcell's style, the music is always refined. The soloists are all top-notch here, and the choir (King's College of Cambridge) is, as always, magnificent. It is really nice to hear the soprano part sung by boys, as I think it gives another dimension to Purcell's music.

Throughout his career, Ilya Gringolts has devoted himself to performing contemporary music as well as the great concert repertoire, while also developing a keen interest in historical performance practice. The focus of his latest recital disc is therefore quite logical: music of our own time and its inspiration: Johann Sebastian Bach. The album title is Ciaccona and besides Bach’s iconic composition, Gringolts plays a further two chaconnes – or three if one counts the Ciacconina which opens Heinz Holliger’s brief cycle, composed for Isabelle Faust in 2014.

The Woman in Red[Original Soundtrack] Review by William Ruhlmann
Stevie Wonder's career in the 1980s was a source of frustration to the fans he had earned in the '60s and '70s. In 1982, there were a few new songs on a greatest-hits album and a duet with Paul McCartney. Then came this soundtrack to a Gene Wilder comedy that was simultaneously more of a pop vocal album than most soundtracks and yet less than a full-fledged Wonder record. The gold-selling number one hit that resulted was the sappy "I Just Called to Say I Love You," a formulaic TV commercial-in-the-making. "Love Light in Flight" also hit, and the album featured Dionne Warwick on two duets and one solo. This was a pleasant record, but slight, and after four years, Wonder fans wanted more than that.

A unique film deserves a unique score. The famous song from “The Longest Day” was written and composed by Paul Anka. The rest of the score was composed, arranged, and orchestrated by Maurice Jarre. It was the minimum needed for this super production, which is considered as one of the most brilliant tributes to the freedom soldiers! In addition to “The Longest Day”’s score are featured the World War II cinema classics’ soundtracks: Denys de la Patellière’s “Un Taxi Pour Tobrouk” composed by Georges Garvarentz, René Clément’s “Is Paris Burning?” composed by Maurice Jarre, René Clément’s “La Bataille du Rail” composed by Yves Baudrier, René Clément’s “Mr. Orchid composed by René Cloërec, and René Clément’s “Forbidden Games” composed by Narciso Yepes.

The cube made with matches which appears on the cover of this disc, showing on flames in the inside of the digipak and afterwards completely burnt, plays with the ideas that inspire this dazzling recording: the four ways to the knowledge of numbers through the Quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy), which are expressed through something as ephemeral assound, where also the unexpected and the emotion of the moment take place.

Ben Harper has released contemplative protest folk and electric guitar–driven rock, but at his core he's a songwriter centered on the distinctly American crossroads of blues and roots music. Perhaps that’s why he sounds so comfortable alongside a distinguished elder bluesman like harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite. This collaboration of soulful tunes grew out of the deepest of blues traditions, but you’d be remiss to write it off as an old-meets-young nostalgia parade; Get Up! taps Musselwhite’s deep well of experience and Harper’s fiery energy for a righteous one-two punch of stomping roots rock.

A sort of supergroup, as most of their members came from well-known bands, Samadhi were formed after the split of Raccomandata con Ricevuta di Ritorno by singer Regoli and guitarist Civitenga, along with keyboard player Sabatini (from Free Love and Kaleidon), Aldo Bellanova from Teoremi on bass and drummer Ruggero Stefani (L'Uovo di Colombo), and two other members. Despite the impressive pedigree of the musicians the album is nice, mixing good prog influences with some jazz and even pop, the best of the seven tracks being the closing "L'ultima Spiaggia" with religious text. The beautiful lyrics were written by poet Enrico Lazzareschi.

At 52-minutes, “Moonflowers” is an eight-song affair that drives deep into the heart of Swallow The Sun main songwriter Juha Raivio’s disconsolate soul. From the dramatic “Enemy” and the grim “This House Has No Home” to the delicate “Moonflowers Bloom in Misery” and the beauteous “The Fight of Your Life,” “Moonflowers” is as rewarding and dynamic as it is accomplished and intimate. That it features Cammie Gilbert (Oceans of Slumber), Antti Hyyrynen (Stam1na), and Trio NOX - who perform a re-arranged classical version of “Moonflowers” in a Finnish church, which comes as a bonus album to some of the album formats - are more reasons to hold Swallow the Sun’s latest leap into the unknown in the highest regard.
