From 1958 to 1993, Thomas and Louise Boddie’s industrious Boddie Recording Company issued nearly 300 albums and 45s, recorded 10,000 hours of tape, and remained in operation longer than any other studio, pressing plant, or label group in the history of Cleveland. Long forgotten even by the standards of the chronically overlooked northeastern Ohio music scene, Boddie was a fusion of its owner’s engineering genius and his limited economic means, its DIY recording studio housed in a humble barn, churning night and day to capture the sounds emanating from Cleveland’s east side neighborhoods. The 58 tracks on these three CDs (or 65-track 5LP) represent the best of the Boddies’ in-house Soul Kitchen, Luau, and Bounty labels, which released an unspoiled treasure trove of kitchen-sink eccentric soul, fuzzbox funk, shoestring doo-wop, and haunted, eerily hook-laden spirituals. Enclosed inside is a mountain of office-styled ephemera: two massive booklets brimming with detail on the Boddies and their artists; extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos; a complete detailed discography folio; reproduced fliers; and a Boddie greeting card—all rendered with the handcrafted charm that was the Boddie hallmark. Things were quite different in the Vienna of the 19th century: the piano had fewer keys, was decorated with wooden inlay and had no steel subframe. All this made them sound quite different.

To anyone who plays chamber music of any sort, Schubert’s music is a wonderful world to enter. It lifts our spirit to a dreamlike state of awe that is quite unique, with it sweeping long lines and pure poetry. The masterpieces on this cd were ‘stolen’ from Schubert’s original instrumentation. Start with the Arpeggione sonata, originally written for the ‘Arpeggione’, a bowed instrument with six strings and frets, tuned like a guitar but played like a gamba.

Bassoonist Lola Descours, prize-winner of the prestigious Tchaikovsky competition in 2019, performs an all-Russian programme of music transcribed for bassoon and piano. A passionate advocate for the bassoon and its often underestimated capacity for colour and expression, Lola Descours performs repertoire of great variety, including Glinka, considered to be the first great Russian composer, as well as lyrical Tchaikovsky, romantic Rachmaninov, powerful Scriabin and sardonic Shostakovich. The programme is brought up to date with a dream-like piece by contemporary Russian composer Lera Auerbach. Lola Descours is partnered in this recital by pianist Paloma Koulder, with whom she has made several of the arrangements heard on the album.

On his latest recording, Behle now presents a selection of Beethoven songs, accompanied by Jan Schultsz on fortepiano. Unlike Schubert or Schumann, Beethoven is not immediately associated with the Lied; one associates him more with the representative of the grand gesture. Between 1935 and 1950 twenty-one of his songs made it to #1 on the radio show Your Hit Parade. He won eleven Academy Award Best Song nominations and three Oscars. His piece "Chattanooga Choo Choo" sold over a million copies, making it the first gold record in history.1932 saw Warren's career rise to new heights. He was asked to score the movie musical 42nd Street with lyricist Al Dubin. The phenomenal success of this movie led to a decades-long career scoring movie musicals in partnership with Dubin. The Warren and Dubin legacy produced the popular Gold Diggers series, Dames and many others. Together they created enduring songs like the Gold Diggers theme "We're in the Money " and "I Only Have Eyes for You."
