Die Interpretationen ein und desselben Musikstücks durch verschiedene Interpreten können in Bezug auf die gewählten Tempi, den Spiel- oder Gesangsstil oder die Phrasierung der Melodien sehr unterschiedlich sein.

Comme son titre l’indique, le disque se penche sur cette année-là, celle des 15 ans de l’adolescente qui porte en elle un secret, qui se dévoilera tout au long des 11 titres. "1988", est un album-concept tout entier consacré à cette histoire-là, comme le long-métrage d’une époque.

In hindsight, Alan Braufman's presence in New York's 1970s avant garde jazz community gives the appearance of a high profile. He played saxophone and flute on albums by Richard Landry, Cecil McBee, and Carla Bley. His only album as leader, until recently, was 1975's Valley of Search—released on India Navigations in the same era as classics by the Revolutionary Ensemble, Hamiet Bluiett, David Murray, Pharoah Sanders, and Arthur Blythe. Braufman's loft on Canal Street, and the pioneering music that emerged from it, received a positive Village Voice write-up from Gary Giddins in 1974.

Although still relatively unknown outside Scandinavia, the Swedish septet STHLM svaga is one of the most interesting and peculiar jazz groups to emerge during the 2000s. They specialize in the art of playing jazz with extremely soft dynamics, creating a completely unique, magical ensemble sound. Saxophonist and band-leader Johan Jutterstrom founded the ensemble and assembled some of the most acknowledged young musicians in Sweden. When he asked Carla Bley to write a composition for the group, she agreed (!), and the recording of this piece was released on the group's debut LP 'Bells & Whistles,' receiving very positive reviews in Scandinavian press.

The documentary May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers, released in 2017 and directed by Judd Apatow, is an intensely human portrait of siblings who are frustratingly flawed and incredibly talented, and their remarkable band, including bassist Bob Crawford, cellist Joe Kwon and fiddler Tania Elizabeth. You quickly understand why producer Rick Rubin—working with them for a sixth time on The Avett Brothers—is captivated not just by the Avetts' magical tones (Scott's soft North Carolina affect and Seth's slightly sharper twang), but also Everlys-esque harmonies and melodies that seem to come as naturally as breathing. There's also a disarming sincerity.
