    Blues Rock | Label: Self-Released

Fresh off their appearance at the 2020 international Blues Challenge semifinals, where they proudly represented their hometown of Santa Clarita, California, Jim Gustin and Truth Jones (Jeri Goldenhar) are set to release their third album, “Lessons Learned.” The eleven new tracks reflect the group’s diversity, talent and experience growing up in the melting pot of Southern California. The new album is a collection of driving blues, funky soul, sultry jazz and American rock ‘n’ roll that speaks to the tales of wild nights in bar rooms, Sunday mornings in church, times of heartbreak, and years of struggle and the wisdom received that fill the songs delivered by two powerful and emotive vocalists. Gustin and Jones are backed by the muscular rhythm section of bassist Scott Duncan and drummer Chuck Strong, along with versatile keyboardist Steve Alterman, and the dynamic saxophonist Lawrence Tamez.

Genre: Indie Rock / Label: Universal-Island Records Ltd.

With an eloquence you’d hope for from a band made up of Cambridge graduates and an old-school penchant for slagging off their indie peers, London-based six-piece Sports Team have long given good interview. Pleasingly, their debut album suggests there’s enough musical substance to back up their fighting talk. Sharply observational lyrics skewering the mores of suburbia and middle England inevitably evoke the less boorish end of the Britpop spectrum. But where the Pulp and Blur of that era always sounded quintessentially British, Deep Down Happy more often takes its musical cues from US alt-rock, most notably the off-kilter melodies of Pavement and the boisterousness of Parquet Courts.

Domenico Scarlatti, the sixth child of the great Alessandro, displayed since a very young age an extraordinary talent for music and an exceptional skill at the keyboard; in fact, already in 1701, when he was not yet 16 years old, he was appointed an organist and composer at the Naples Royal Chapel, with the added task of being the “chamber harpsichordist of H. E.” the Viceroy. After a short stay in Venice, he went to Rome where, starting in 1707, he practised his compositional activity, climbing, step by step, along the cursus honorum of the Roman musical elite, until he became the Chapel Master at the Cappella Giulia at the Basilica of St. Peter.

Following in the footsteps of Geri Halliwell, Mel C (formerly Sporty Spice) has released her debut solo album Northern Star. Like the rest of the Spice Girls, Mel is a self-proclaimed Madonna disciple and has shamelessly enlisted the talents of no less than six former collaborators of the pop icon, including William Orbit and Marius DeVries. The sleek club anthem “I Turn To You,” the best of the album’s tracks, was co-written by none other than Billy Steinberg, of “Like A Virgin” fame.

Shura Cherkassky (1909-1995) was one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time having studied under the legendary Josef Hofmann. This WDR studio broadcast sourced from the original master tapes has Cherkassky playing Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini from 1970 in superb stereo. He recorded the Rhapsody only once in 1953 for EMI in mono but it has never been issued on CD so this taping is exceptionally important and adds a major work to Cherkassky’s large discography. Prokofiev’s wartime Piano Sonata No.7 was never recorded commercially by Cherkassky so this is another addition to his discography sourced from WDR’s original master tapes. It was recorded in 1951 when Cherkassky was fast becoming a star in Germany. The three scenes from Stravinsky’s Petruschka was a favourite virtuoso work for Cherkassky and this 1951 recording shows him at his most brilliant, sourced from WDR’s original master tapes. Three encores have been added from 1951 and 1953 (not sourced from WDR) which again showcase Cherkassky’s incredible technique during the early period of his career in Germany.

This is the ultimate Messiahs record - live in front of a good sized crowd at London's Town & Country Club (later the Forum) at the brief height of their success. The rhythm section are an awesomely powerful, well-drilled machine - Kenny Harris's drumming almost unavoidably conjures up visions of steam locomotives with all the pistons and connecting rods going like crazy … Over the top of it (WELL over the top …) Bill Carter rants (about American cars and Jesus mostly) and slashes at his guitar. You can tell it was very loud (it was …)

If there was ever any question about pop punk’s continued popularity, New Found Glory is proof that the youthful genre never went away. After 23 years together, the Florida band has maintained relevancy by staying loyal to their peppy Warped Tour sound and their fans, and Forever and Ever x Infinity, their tenth studio album, shows them at their most refined. Singer Jordan Pundik’s joyful, nasal vocal tone has only become more distinguished, and the band has mastered what made them so distinctive in the first place: palm-muted power chords and gang vocals (“Nothing to Say”), nerdy pop culture references (“Scarier Than Jason Voorhees at a Campfire”), and playful self-deprecation (“Double Chin for the Win”) alongside assurances that everything is going to be okay (“Shook by Your Shaved Head”). These are songs meant to elicit the same rush as a school-age crush, just like New Found Glory songs always have.

Jazz / New Orleans Jazz / Trombone

One of trombonist Kid Ory's greatest recordings, this consistently exciting CD features trumpeter Alvin Alcorn, clarinetist Phil Gomez, and a strong rhythm section that includes bassist Wellman Braud and Ory's longtime drummer, Minor Hall. These versions of "Mahogany Hall Stomp," "There'll Be Some Changes Made," "At the Jazz Band Ball," and "Shine" are all gems, giving listeners some of the very best in New Orleans jazz and showing that the music need not be played haltingly by over-the-hill musicians; one can capture its spirit and joy without sacrificing musicianship. Every jazz collection should have this music.

Basically these four CDs, spread over two double albums, are Toehider's second release. Confusing? Let me explain. Toehider released their debut album To Hide Her in 2008 and after that the band, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Mills, guitarist Lachlan Barclay, bass player Amy Campbell and drummer Ricky Evensand, wanted to do something different so the next release consisted of twelve separate albums which were released on the twelfth of every following month. What I am holding now is the combination of twelve EP size albums gathered on The First Six and The Last Six.

Formidable album with the best french jazzman: Michel Petrucciani, Richard Galliano, Jacky terrasson,Eddy Louis, Pierre Drevet and the collaboration of Diane Reeves. The program aims to revisit Aznavour's song book in jazz form. So here are in great versions "Yesterday, When i was Young", " Mes Emmerdes", "Ce sacré piano", "J'aime París au mois de mai", "Me Voilà Seul", "She" and last but not least "Au creux de mon épaule". This CD combines the softness of the classic French style and the addicting jazz flare to create a very nice CD for any kind of music lover.
