Third, album pubblicato dall'etichetta abruzzese Wide Sound è, come si può intuire dal titolo, il terzo disco di Pippo Matino, bassista elettrico napoletano tra i più interessanti del panorama strumentale europeo e musicista poliedrico il cui repertorio spazia dalla musica leggera italiana alla musica jazz nonchè alle contaminazioni di questa con il funky, il blues e il rock.

Drummer Billy Cobham, guitarist Bill Bickford, and bassist Wolfgang Schmid form a creative fusion trio on Paradox. The result is a powerhouse addition to Cobham's discography. The music ranges from the roiling heavy metal sludge of Bickford's "Four More Years," to the full-on funk of Schmid's "Fonkey Donkey," to Cobham's calmly lyrical "Walking in Five." Schmid is the principal writer, followed by Bickford, then Cobham. The best way to set the scene is with Paradox's version of "Quadrant 4." The original was the defining track on Cobham's 1973 debut release, Spectrum. Coming on the heels of Cobham's work with John McLaughlin's original Mahavishnu Orchestra, Spectrum is one of the essential documents of fusion's classic era.

Over the past couple of years while making their new album, Deerhoof have been asking themselves if there was any music they could create that expressed how our rapidly emerging future might actually feel. The band envisioned an album about people haunted by memory of a lost world and of every failed attempt to save it. People already living outside the system, already having practiced new ways of life required for survival - these hopeful heroes are Deerhoof's inspiration. These are the FTCA. Faithful listeners will recognize a certain alienated but transformational figure who shows up in Deerhoof songs going back to their earliest days.

In 2014, from the ashes of the cult band Buttered Bacon Biscuits (BBB), were born the Witchwood. After the BBB split, some members of the band, Ricky, Andy, Steve and Sam, have decided, with the entry of new member Luca Celotti on bass, to start a new project, Witchwood. All musicians active for decades, with past recording experience and collaborations with artists like Martin Grice (Delirium) and Nik Turner (Hawkwind). Debut "Litanies from the woods" is the result of 2 years of composition, long and hard rehersal and recording sessions and is out for Jolly Roger Records in 2015. With the considerable lenght of 78 minutes the album features ten tracks and is a long journey from hard rock 70's, to progressive, psych, southern rock and blues and receives excellent reviews both from Italian and foreign press…

For over forty years, Carla Bley has written music that infuses jazz traditions with her own personality. She continues to lead a variety of ensembles, from small combos to large-scale big bands. With Looking for America, Bley returns to the big band format. Totaling 18 pieces, the group is a rich blend of 13 horns, two keyboards, and a rhythm section. She has worked with many of the featured musicians for decades, and Bley consequently composes and arranges with their individual voices in mind.

The recording quality is not the greatest on this LP but the very early session by the Lighthouse All-Stars is both historic and quite listenable. Trumpeter Shorty Rogers teams up with altoist Art Pepper, pianist Frank Patchen, bassist Howard Rumsey, and drummer Shelly Manne for his own "Popo" (a blues that was Shorty's theme song) plus nine jazz standards including "Lullaby in Rhythm," "Robbins Nest," "Scrapple from the Apple," and "Cherokee." This is one of Pepper's best early showcases and it is for his playing that the album is most highly recommended.
