Recorded live in the UK and Europe during the 2007 Power trio Tour. New Jersey-born blues-rocker Walter Trout spent decades as an ace sideman, playing guitar behind the likes of John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, and Joe Tex. In 1981, he was also tapped to replace the late Bob Hite in Canned Heat, remaining with the venerable group through the middle of the decade. While filling in one night for an ailing John Mayall, Trout (also a Bluesbreaker for some five years) was spotted by a Danish concert promoter who agreed to finance a solo tour. Assembling his own backing band, he released his debut LP in 1990, Life in the Jungle, trailed a year later by Prisoner of a Dream. Albums including 1992's Live (No More Fish Jokes), 1994's Tellin' Stories, and 1997's Positively Beale Street followed.

New Jersey garage rockers who channeled the Beatles to impressive effect on their 1965 hit "Lies." In the wake of the British Invasion, plenty of American bands wished they could make like the Beatles, at least in terms of record sales. But from a musical standpoint, no one sounded quite so much like the Fab Four as the Knickerbockers on their biggest hit, 1965's "Lies," which brilliantly captured the sound of the Beatles' early period with its enthusiastic harmonies and tough but melodic guitar lines. While the band never quite repeated the feat, for years pranksters passed "Lies" off as a rare Beatles track to unsuspecting music buffs, and the group earned a cult following from fans of first-era garage rock.

This previously unreleased set from the 1980 Montreux Jazz Festival features the pacesetting Afro-Cuban jazz conguero Mongo Santamaria and his frequently blazing seven-piece band. With trumpeter Tommy Villarini (whose high-note flurries sound a little like Jon Faddis in spots) and saxophonists Doug Harris and Allen Hoist (who takes a rare spot on cello) taking heated solos and Santamaria a major force throughout, this is highly enjoyable music. "Watermelon Man" has guest appearances by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and harmonica great Toots Thielemans, although Gillespie is inaudible and Thielemans is largely buried in the band. It really does not matter, for Santamaria's group is quite stirring by itself. Milton Hamilton's long and inventive, unaccompanied introduction to "Solrito" is a highlight of this highly recommended date.
