In the early '90s, in the middle of his mandate as councilman for Salvador, Gil was again concerned with the Afro roots of Brazilian people, and this album strongly reflects that. "Madalena" brings social criticism through Afro soca grooves. "Parabolicamara" builds a discourse about communications over a beautiful ponto de macumba melody with enriched harmonies. "Um Sonho" is a doleful toada about the lack of understanding of the popular soul by politicians and technocrats. "Buda Nago" is a tribute to Dorival Caymmi in Afro-Bahian style, which features the guest singer Nana Caymmi (Dorival's daughter and Gil's former wife).

The Pédron name could soon be equally famous in Germany, not only due to the fact that with his newest album he will join the ACT-family, but also because it is his most personal and extensive project so far. “I had been playing standards, but now I wanted to play my own music,” says Pédron, who after his debut album “Cherokee” (2000) was widely celebrated as an excellent Charlie Parker interpreter. Something that has fascinated him since his youth are the ‘fanfare’ brass bands that are extremely popular in his home country. In Northern France, in the Netherlands and in Belgium they can be found almost everywhere, as both amateur bands and professional groups.

LA Opera's latest production of Verdi s Macbeth (2016) features Plácido Domingo in the title role and Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk as Lady Macbeth. The opera is staged by Darko Tresnjak, who won a Tony Award for his direction of the Broadway musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder.

One doesn't automatically think of big bands when remembering late-'60s jazz, though big bands like the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra continued to make stimulating recordings. Central Park North, recorded and released in 1969, testifies that one could be a big band and progressive at the same time. Flügelhornist Jones and percussionist Lewis are joined by a large cast of players, including tenor Joe Farrell, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, and pianist Roland Hanna. The music runs the gauntlet from funky soul-jazz to more gentle traditional work, sometimes within the same piece. Jones' "Tow Away Zone" begins like a rather typical late-'60s composition (horns and organ with a soulful groove), but as the individual players cut loose with excellent solo work – built within a multi-layered arrangement – the piece takes on a character of its own.

The music has the unforced feel of (Chicago's) blues of the late 30s and 40s without once sounding anachronistic. The five musicians (playing as a quintet) share the vocal duties, providing striking contrasts…All the material is original in the true sense, not just old blues with reshuffled lyrics and new titles, and the quintet interprets it with real conviction. However, there was one essential interest the two of them shared at the close of the 19th century: they both cultivated the old art of counterpoint. With his complete recording of the organ works by Johannes Brahms, performed on the Bruckner Organ of St. Florian Monastery (Upper Austria) Andreas Etlinger brings all the beauty of this art to life.

Plaza Mayor Company will release a soundtrack album for the Swiss drama Paradise War: The Story of Bruno Manser (Bruno Manser – Die Stimme des Regenwaldes). The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner Gabriel Yared (The Talented Mr. Ripley, The English Patient, Cold Mountain, 1408, Judy). Paradise War: The Story of Bruno Manser is directed by Niklaus Hilber and stars Sven Schelke as Swiss explorer and environmentalist Bruno Manser who disappeared without trace in 2000. The drama is premiering this week at the Zurich Film Festival and is set to open in Swiss theaters this November.

Albums that combine live and studio tracks can, in some cases, be inconsistent. Some artists are so reliant on studio technology that they fall apart in a live setting; they sound stiff and awkward the minute they take the stage. And on the other hand, some artists are so fond of playing live that they become inhibited in the studio. But there is nothing inconsistent or uneven about Walter Trout's debut album, Life in the Jungle, a collection of live and studio recordings from 1989; on this release, the blues-rocker is as focused and inspired on-stage as he is in the studio. All of the tracks were recorded in Scandinavian countries; the live performances are from an appearance at the Midtfyn Festival in Denmark on July 2, 1989, while the studio material is from a session in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 21 and July 9 of that year.

Indie singer/songwriter Phoebe Bridgers's popularity exploded after the release of her 2017 debut Stranger in the Alps. Her sad, sardonic songs were undercut by her dry wit, and her straightforward delivery of emotionally naked material placed her in a lineage of songwriting excellence that included Elliott Smith, Neko Case, and Cat Power. Second solo album Punisher arrives after two high-profile collaborations: a 2018 EP from boygenius, her supergroup with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, and Better Oblivion Community Center, a makeshift band based around songs written by Bridgers and Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst.

Hamburger Ratsmusik: an ensemble with a 500-year-old history. This contrast prompts a creative dialogue between tradition and the present day, about Early Music and vivid interpretation. The origins of Hamburg‘s “municipal music” go back to the 16th century. Under the motto “in praise of God and for the pleasure, delight and edification of Hamburg”, the city created an elite ensemble of eight city musicians, which was to be the equal of the princely court ensembles (Hofkapellen) to be found elsewhere. The Ratsmusik attained early excellence in the 17th and 18th centuries under such eminent musicians as William Brade, Johann Schop, Georg Philipp Telemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Revived in 1991 by gambist Simone Eckert, the ensemble now performs in Germany, many European countries, the USA and China. More than 30 albums (largely with world premiere recordings of Early Music) and recordings for all German public radio stations and Austrian broadcaster ORF document its rediscoveries of music from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical eras. The ensemble received the Echo Klassik award in 2006 and 2010, and was awarded the 2016 RITTER Prize by the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation in Hamburg. The musicians will be responding to renewed invitations to China in 2021. Hamburger Ratsmusik is the Ensemble in Residence in the Komponisten-Quartier museum complex in Hamburg.

The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser is the sixth solo studio album by Rob Zombie. The album was released on April 29, 2016. Zombie described it as "seriously our heaviest most fucked up musical monster to date." The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 with 41,000 equivalent album units; it sold 40,000 copies in its first week. It was the fifth best-selling album of the week. The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser became Zombie's sixth consecutive top-ten album.

One of the most prolific and reliable names in instrumental easy listening music, the 101 Strings Orchestra has literally recorded hundreds of albums since its inception in 1957. Their trademark sound is built on a reverence for melody, pristine production, and a pleasant, relaxing ambience; while occasional albums have concentrated on brass, piano, guitars, and even mild rock & roll rhythms, the string section – true to the group's name – nearly always remains front and center, because of its lush, soothing sound qualities.

December Poems consists of four pieces for solo bass and two duets with Jan Garbarek on tenor and soprano sax. More accurately, the opening "Snow Dance" and the closing "Celebrations" are overdubbed bass duos (in part), while "Flower Crystals" pairs Peacock's bass with atmospheric strummed piano, although no piano credit is given. "December Greenwings," one of Peacock's most distinctive compositions, would later reappear on 2001's Amaryllis with Marilyn Crispell and Paul Motian. Despite the sparse and somewhat cold feeling of the record, Peacock's virtuosity and sterling tone are well-served in a solo format, especially so on the stately "A Northern Tale."

Transilvanian Hunger is the fourth studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone. It was released 17 February 1994 by Peaceville Records. Transilvanian Hunger was the band's first album to be recorded with just two members, Nocturno Culto and Fenriz, following the departure of Zephyrous. The album was recorded on a 4-track recorder set up in Fenriz's bedroom (dubbed "Necrohell studios" by the band). Lyrics for four of the album's songs were written by the Norwegian black metal musician Varg Vikernes, who performed solo as Burzum. The cover art was a black-and-white photograph of Fenriz with a candelabrum, which bore a likeness to the cover of Mayhem's 1993 live album Live in Leipzig. The back cover stated that "Darkthrone is for all the evil in man" and listed the slogan "True Norwegian Black Metal".
