AVID Jazz here presents three classic Barney Kessel albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'Some Like It Hot', 'The Poll Winners', 'Carmen' and eight of nine tracks from 'The Poll Winners Ride Again' Barney Kessel was voted the most popular jazz guitarist for three straight years between 1956- 1958 by three major US polls for Down Beat, Playboy and Metronome. All but one of our selections were recorded during this period and the fourth when he was still riding high in 1959! 'Some Like It Hot'- a modern jazz album version of the songs from the classic movie 'Some Like It Hot' starring, of course, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. As Barney observed 'This was a lot of fun for all of us the arrangements were head arrangementsit has a relaxed loose feeling'.

10cc has been subjected to countless compilations over the years – the hits get recycled regularly and the early stuff for Jonathan King's U.K. Records gets shuffled around – but they've never had a testament to their weird work until the 2012 box set Tenology. Running four CDs and one DVD, Tenology is certainly generous, but a case could be made that it could have been even longer, encompassing a disc of their early work making bubblegum for Strawberry Studios (in lieu of that, the 2003 Castle compilation, Strawberry Bubblegum serves as an excellent supplement to this), but what is here shows that 10cc was far stranger, savvier, funnier, and wilder than "I'm Not in Love" and "The Things We Do for Love" might suggest…

Released in 1968, Mr. Wonderful is the second album by the British blues-rock band, Fleetwood Mac. This all-blues album was broadly similar to their debut album, albeit with some changes to personnel and recording method. The album was recorded live in the studio with miked amplifiers and PA system, rather than plugged into the board…

Cat #1 is the fourth solo studio album released by former Kiss drummer Peter Criss, and first under the band name Criss. Criss re-recorded the Kiss song "Beth" for the album. Unlike the orchestrated original version, the new recording was an acoustic version. The album also features former-Kiss bandmate Ace Frehley playing guitar on three tracks. In 1993, Criss released a special limited edition preview EP of his forthcoming album. Three tracks were released on the 1994 CD and two tracks were only available on the limited edition. For the cover art, it was Criss' idea to paint half of his face in his original Kiss makeup, while leaving the other half plain. The idea was to link past and present.

Although the very attractive Lena Horne has never really been a jazz singer, her vocals are generally of interest to jazz listeners and she has occasionally recorded in jazz settings. This Bluebird CD is pretty definitive of the first half of her career. Horne sings a pair of ballads with Charlie Barnet's 1941 orchestra and two songs (including "Don't Take Your Love From Me") with a unique Artie Shaw-led all-star band that includes Benny Carter, Red Allen, and a string section. The remainder of the disc features Horne backed by studio orchestras, and the results are superior (if sometimes overly dramatic) renditions of standards as rendered by a top-notch cabaret singer. Highlights include "Stormy Weather," "Ill Wind," "Moanin' Low," "As Long As I Live," and "It's All Right With Me."

Northward ho! Sébastien Daucé and his musicians here make a geographical detour, forsaking England and France in order to explore Lutheran Europe before J. S. Bach. One is struck by the expressive vigour of these finely detailed works, which have retained all their power to fascinate today’s listeners. Merging old and new, the austerely beautiful language of Buxtehude, Schütz and the much more rarely heard Dijkman unexpectedly echoes the music of their contemporary Marc-Antoine Charpentier.

Lazy Farmer's sole album is solid and full-bodied (if conventional and unremarkable) British folk, with a repertoire heavily grounded in traditional tunes. Indeed, eight of the 12 tracks on Lazy Farmer are traditional in origin, while another, "The Cuckoo," is not exactly uncommon to the English-speaking folk world. With a quintet featuring four vocalists, two five-string banjo players, and two multi-instrumentalists in John Bidwell (flute, flageolet, guitar) and Jake Walton (dulcimer, hurdy-gurdy, guitar), the band has a richer, deeper sound than many British groups with a similar style. Collectors might be most attracted to this by the presence of noted U.K. folk figure Wizz Jones, though he wrote just one of the cuts, the wistful "When I Leave Berlin," which is one of the set's highlights…

Leonard Slatkin celebrated his 75th birthday in September 2019. Many of the selections in this program come from a concert given in his honor and are also a tribute to his remarkable musical family, both past and present. Historical recordings include Leonard’s cellist mother, Eleanor Aller, being conducted by Korngold in the Haydn concerto and a 1944 broadcast of his father, Felix, as a solo violinist in Brahms. Every piece here has a deeply personal connection for the family. For his composition The Raven, Leonard used Edgar Allan Poe’s poem in a work that is “almost like a concerto for speaker and orchestra.”

She has been described as a ’virtuoso’ by the press on three continents, and has not only engaged in a busy and highly successful performing career but is tireless in her work for the underprivileged. Aisha is the Honorary Cultural Goodwill Ambassador of the Dominican Republic and works devotedly through charitable ventures (some of which she founded) to bring classical music to the underprivileged and socially disadvantaged.

Urbie Green has spent most of his career as a studio musician rather than leading many of his own recordings, but this early date as a leader (originally issued by Bethlehem) showed that the trombonist had lots of promise. With arrangements and several strong compositions by the now-obscure Marion Evans, Green is accompanied by a strong group, including Danny Bank, Oscar Pettiford, Osie Johnson, and Al Cohn (identified on the initial release under the pseudonym Ike Horowitz). The very hushed take of "On Green Dolphin Street" features the leader's mellow trombone and the fine muted trumpet of Doug Mettone, while "Three Little Words" is an effortless swinger. Cohn adds a twist with several top-notch bass clarinet solos. Finally reissued by Avenue Jazz in 2001, this rewarding cool jazz date has stood the test of time rather well and is worth purchasing.
