Paul Tortelier, born in Paris in 1914, became very well known in Britain through his remarkable program for BBC Television in which he gave to his young students so many insights into the music and its performance in the form of a Master class. As a performer himself his natural flair communicated his enthusiasm and genius to all in the audience as well as his fellow musicians; it seemed as if the cello was a natural extension of his body and he invited, as it were, the instrument to dance with him. Whilst he had an enormous range of musical sympathies it was to the music of Bach that he always returned – no coincidence that he made two recordings of the six Suites, the first in 1960 in Paris and then nearly 22 years later in London. He said, in reply to a question about atonality, that music is like a locked box – in order to get inside it you need a key! His engaging personality and genuine love and interest in music endeared him to his many fans throughout the world and it his death at the age of only 76 was greeted with universal sadness. This 20-CD set is being released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death on July 18, 1990.

Motown's 1986 double-LP, What's Going On/Let's Get It On combined Marvin Gaye's two best-known albums in one set. Although the moods of the two albums aren't necessarily compatible the first is a reflective social protest piece, the second, well, the title is self-explanatory it was an excellent bargain to have the two classic albums together.

On how this very special performance came together, Alan says "We had been booked to play here with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and I thought it might be a great opportunity to record a video of the show. It’s a rare treat to perform with an orchestra, so I asked the IM3 Global Entertainment video team of Trinity Houston and David Minasian, who had earlier that year had done a great job filming two of our live shows in the Netherlands and produced our latest music video, The NeverEnding Show, to join us and film this performance as well. As luck would have it, they agreed to make the trip to Tel Aviv, and hired a fantastic crew of local cameramen and technicians. We are all very proud of the final result."

Bach wrote four cantatas for solo countertenor, two of which, BWV 35 and 169, incorporate magnificent concerto movements. So, they’re the perfect vehicles for the crack team of Iestyn Davies’s extraordinary vocal control and Arcangelo’s nimble-footedness.
BWV 169, Gott soll allein mein Herze haben (‘God alone shall have my heart’) leaps from the starting blocks with an ebullient sinfonia with organ obbligato that Bach himself probably played at its first performance in Leipzig in 1726, and which he later arranged as the first movement of the E major Keyboard Concerto BWV 1053. It’s compellingly paced and played here by Arcangelo who, in later movements, adapt to every one of Davies’s vocal inflections, most notably in recitatives. The second aria, ‘Stirb in mir’, a sicilienne, is one of Bach’s most breathtaking, and Davies and Arcangelo strike a near-perfect mix of ‘Affekt’ and rhythmic swing. No less impressive is the performance of BWV 35, Geist und Seele wird verwirret ('Spirit and Soul become confused') with its two noble sinfonias from a now-lost oboe concerto. The first of its three arias is another sicilienne, this time juxtaposing a decorative organ part.

The Oxford Camerata with their beautifully blended timbre have their own way with Tallis. Lines are firm, the singing has serenity but also a firm pulse. In the Mass (and particularly in the Sanctus) the expressive strength is quite strongly communicated, while the Benedictus moves on spontaneously at the close. The motets respond particularly well to Jeremy Summerly’s degree of intensity. The opening Loquebantur variis linguis has much passionate feeling, and this (together with the Audivi vocem and, especially, the lovely Sancte Deus) shows this choir of a dozen singers at their most eloquent. The recording, made in the Chapel of Wellington College, is very fine indeed.

Over the years, The Flaming Lips have come to represent a lot of things to a lot of people, from curious alt rock oddities to psychedelic-inspired chamber pop superheroes. But of the many feathers that rightfully fit in the Lips’ musical cap, “cover band” is a curious one. For a band that prides itself on reaching further beyond the realm of sanity than anyone, doing a cover record just seems, I don’t know, kind of beneath them.

WaterTower music releases the Original Television Soundtrack to Season 2 of the Warner Bros series Batwoman. The score is provided by veteran composers Blake Neely and Sherri Chung.
Batwoman is an American superhero television series developed by Caroline Dries for The CW. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, it is part of the Arrowverse continuity. The first season follows Kate Kane, the cousin of vigilante Bruce Wayne, who becomes Batwoman in his absence. Beginning with the second season, the series focuses on former convict Ryan Wilder as she protects Gotham City in the role of Batwoman.

"Madness, Money & Music" is the 3rd album by singer Sheena Easton. It was released in 1982 and produced by Christopher Neil. The album includes the singles "I Wouldn't Beg for Water" (US #64) and "Machinery" (US #57, UK #38), as well as the UK single "Are You Man Enough". The album featured an early recording of the song "Wind Beneath My Wings", which would later be famously covered by Bette Midler and others. It also included the first recording of "You Do It", subsequently recorded by Diana Ross and Rita Coolidge, and a cover of Janis Ian's classic "In The Winter". The album was one of Easton's lower-charting efforts, reaching #85 in the United States #44 in the UK, but was more successful in Scandinavia and went Gold in Canada. Easton promoted the album by way of an hour-long special Act One, produced for American television and syndicated worldwide, during which she performed a number of songs from the album and embarked on her first world tour.

Pal Waaktaar and Magne Furuholmen, formerly of Bridges, formed a-ha in the early '80s. Morten Harket joined the duo, and they left for the now "legendary London flat" (so called because of its state of disrepair) to make it. By late 1983 they had achieved part of that goal by signing to WEA. "Take on Me" took three times to become a hit in the U.K., eventually hitting number two in November 1985…
