Award-winning singer/songwriter/harmonica player has been playing soul-powered R&B for over 40 years. His compelling career story involves stints with Santana, The Robert Cray Band and Roomful of Blues, not to mention tutoring John Belushi for his role as "Joliet" Jake Blues in The Blues Brothers. 'The Beautiful Lowdown' is Salgado's most personal record, as for the first time he wrote or co-wrote almost all the songs. He also co-produced and contributed to horn and background vocal parts. The results, from soulful Van Morrison-esque rock to slippery funk, from gritty harp-stoked blues to devastating ballads, is nothing short of spectacular.

"Sailin'" is the 3rd studio album by Kim Carnes, released in 1976. "Sailin'" further mined the soft contemporary rock sound heard on "Kim Carnes" (1975) and that would continue throughout the Seventies. Jerry Wexler produced, with some sessions taking place at Muscle Shoals in Alabama and featuring that studio’s famous in-house rhythm section. Again, most songs were Carnes or Carnes-Ellingson originals, bolstered by two covers, Gerry Goffin and Barry Goldberg's "It’s Not The Spotlight" and Van Morrison's "Warm Love". There were no hit singles, but the closing track, "Love Comes From Unexpected Places", was a leading prize winner at two major song festivals (The American Song Festival and The Tokyo Song Festival) and was covered the following year by Barbra Streisand on her hugely successful "Superman" album, bringing Kim’s work to a much wider audience.

The Loot were something of a poppier, minor-league Troggs. Like the Troggs, they came from Andover. Guitarist Dave Wright had been an early member of the Troggs, and briefly replaced Chris Britton in the Troggs when Britton left the band for a short spell in 1967. The Loot recorded for Page One, the label run by Troggs manager Larry Page, and issued "Baby Come Closer" as their 1966 debut single; the song would also be done by the Troggs on their second LP.
The Loot never did have anything close to a hit, in large part because they never did corral the right song for any of their half-dozen 1966-1969 singles. They played fair but hardly outstanding moddish pop/rock, a bit lusty and raw sometimes, but not nearly as much so as the Troggs. Seven of the 12 songs from their singles are included on the various-artists compilation Untamed & Innocent, which also has rarities from fellow collector-favorite mod bands the Sorrows, the Untamed, and the Thoughts. ~ Richie Unterberger

This Edition presents the “Magnificent Seven” and the “encore” in optimum technical quality. In the mid-Fifties of the last century, with the Cold War freezing relations between East and West, the English record label Decca decided to record a series of Russian operas with the Belgrade National Opera. Belgrade in the Yugoslavia of those days under Josip Tito was more open to “the West” than the Warsaw Pact countries gathered under the wing of the Soviet Union. The deal had been struck by former Decca manager and successful promoter of east European folklore in the USA, record executive Gerald Severn.

Great AOR mini-album made by John Warren with Hi-Tech Pop influences, a good example is the entitled "Take Me Back". "The Love Beat" this song reminded of "Silent Running" (Mike & The Mechanics) a lot). "Into The Night" catchy song, nice tune and good solo (Harmonica and Guitar) with a pomp feeling on the chorus. "Carry On" my favorite AOR song here! "I'll Do Anything for You" a semi-ballad , what a voice! - similar to Steve Overland. "Tell Me Now" great uptempo song that finishes the album in an excellent way.

A fine album that Elektra let slide from talented Renn Woods, ex-lead singer of Los Angeles sensations Sunday's Child. Produced by Chuck Jackson, the younger brother of Jessie Jackson, who established Natalie Cole on the charts, the selections include dancefloor dandies "If You Come With Me (I Can Show You Love)" and exquisite ballads like "Take Me to Heaven." Woods has it all – voice, personality, looks, smarts – everything but the magic ingredients needed for a hit record, though she fares quite successfully as an actress.

At the Club: 16 Killer Beat-Punkers from Europe Review by Richie Unterberger
Yes, the 16 mid-'60s Continental cuts assembled here are hellishly rare, and the compilers took care to ensure geographical diversity, with groups from Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Spain, and one from Australia. It's a mediocre anthology, though, with the usual top-heavy equation of raw enthusiasm far outweighing strong material. Even when judged against the standards of the genre, it doesn't stack up well; there are numerous better Eurobeat compilations around. The only true standouts among the basic R&B-influenced numbers are the Dynamites (from Switzerland), who sound like a garage Them on "Don't Leave Me Behind," and Australia's Fabulous Bluejays, who absorbed the most British Invasion influence of any of the acts on the LP.

When Niels Rosing-Schow was growing up, Danish music was adapting to the New Simplicity of Henning Christiansen, Ole Buck and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen. European ears were growing familiar with the slow, crystalline musical metamorphoses of György Ligeti. From the Paris of Gérard Grisey, Tristan Murail and Iannis Xenakis came the suggestion that sound and harmony might just be the same thing.

Steve Vai has continually challenged notions of traditional guitar playing and composition – and on more than one occasion even reimagined the very instrument itself. "I don't sit around and say, 'Okay, what can I do now that pushes the boundaries?," Vai explains about his approach to the guitar. "What I do say to myself is, 'Okay, Vai – what are you going to do now that's going to interest you, that's going to fascinate you, and that's different than anything you've done before?" The answer to that question comes in the form of Vai's newest and 10th solo album, 'Inviolate', a nine-song opus that does indeed push the boundaries of instrumental guitar music – this time out, Vai quite literally invented not just a new guitar, but also a new guitar-playing technique.

After Cher's incredibly successful period in the 1960’s both as a solo artist and as part of the Sonny & Cher duo, "Cherilyn La Pier" as she was born, moved labels to MCA records and released her first album, simply called "Chér". Produced by the the legendary Snuff Garrett, it included Cher's first solo #1 hit, "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", which topped the U.S. charts at the end of 1971, reaching #4 in the U.K. She followed that with another track from the album, "The Way Of Love" which went into the American Top 10, staying in the charts for ten weeks. The album proved that Cher was a force to be reckoned with on her own. She released her second MCA album in 1972, "Foxy Lady" included Cher's third U.S. hit of the 1970’s, "Living In A House Divided", as well as material by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. Sonny Bono also contributed and co-produced one of the tracks.

What a pity that Vol. 3 of string quartets by George Onslow (1784-1853) is the last in the survey. It may just be the best of the three, including Onslow’s great early C minor quartet op. 8, and two other top-notch specimens overflowing with melody, excitement, and power. If you’re new to Onslow, this program is the perfect introduction to his variegated talents and expressive aims. The Mandelring Quartet is a spirited and persuasive team playing from the heart; three members of the quartet are siblings and their father was an Onslow scholar.

Georges Onslow (1284-1853) was the prime example of a highly talented composing nobleman who was fortunate never to have to fight for a living as a musician. Significantly, it is the chamber music that makes up the bulk of his work: 70 alone He has left string quartets and quintets. The fact that there are almost jewels among them, cpo proved a few years ago with a recording of the Mandelring Quartett.
