Tomorrow’s five deeply stirring transcendent electronic pieces draw from Steve’s current high tide of creativity and introspection. Developed over the last six months within the stylistic mode he describes as “elegant futurism,” cyclical melodic weavings flow and ebb in a graceful momentum infused with deep emotion. Tomorrow finds a rare balance between a feeling of floating and one of kinetic movement; this unexpected symmetry breathes life and energy into each piece.

Innovative multi-percussionist Kahil El'Zabar composes, arranges and conducts an incredible new album. It features masterful performances by the (late, great) Hamiet Bluiett, Corey Wilkes, Tomeka Reid & the James Sanders String Qt. A strong percussion section is complimented by strings and brass, in a powerful blend of spiritual groove, melody and improvisation - an inspired re-imagining of a 'better' way, parallel to the central message of this album. America the Beautiful is Kahil El'Zabar's musical testament to the state of affairs, expressed with love, urgency, hope & spirit.

Two things stand out on this previously unreleased concert recording from 1970: first, Ella's irrepressible energy and girlish sense of humor, which she indulges at every opportunity; second, her eclectic tastes, which allow her to follow Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll" with "Spinning Wheel," a Blood, Sweat & Tears song. And that's not to mention the Harry Nilsson number and the three Bacharach songs. There are the standard Ella showpieces that no audience would have let her leave out - "Mack the Knife," "The Girl from Ipanema," "You'll Have to Swing It (Mr. Paganini)" - and she sings all of them with her typical flawless intonation and freewheeling allusiveness (only Ella could have figured out how to quote "Hello Dolly" in the middle of "Cabaret," or would have wanted to)…

Guitarist-singer Jimmy Thackery's 1998 set stretches beyond the blues. A ferocious rockish guitarist with a vocal style that ranges from shouting to mellow, Thackery is easily the main star of his disc. However the other members of his Drivers are strong (Al Gamble on organ and piano, bassist Michael Patrick and drummer Mark Stutso), and there are features for guest accordionist Chubby Carrier on "Take Me With You When You Go" (a zydeco romp) and singer Reba Russell ("Dancing on Broken Glass") plus a helpful appearance apiece by Lonnie Brooks and Joe Louis Walker. From blues to rock with touches of zydeco, country, pop and folk, Thackery constantly stretches himself and gives the music his best.

In the mid-1960s, the rigid and colourless British way of life was irrevocably transformed by the emergence of the underground movement, a loose collective of young radicals who introduced new social, sexual and aesthetic perspectives. Operating out of the heart of London, their various activities, from the newspaper the International Times, to the psychedelic club UFO, promoted alternative lifestyles and values and sparked a cultural revolution.

This would be the drummer's last recording, cut six months before he died. It shows Williams in a more conciliatory mood, sublimating his huge chops and bombastic style for subtler shadings and support for pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Ira Coleman, while lessening none of his indefatigable swing. This was also the last band Williams toured with, indicating he was committed to and comfortable with the acoustic piano-bass-drums format. It's a setting he had never really fully exploited over his years of leadership, no doubt inspired by the Herbie Hancock-Ron Carter partnership within the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-'60s.

Lennie Tristano's Atlantic debut was a controversial album at the time of its release. Though Tristano was regarded as a stellar and innovative bebop pianist, he had been absent from recording for six years and had founded a jazz school where he focused instead on teaching. The first four tunes on this set shocked the jazz world at the time of their release (though not critic Barry Ulanov, who was Tristano's greatest champion and wrote the liner notes for the set). The reason was that on those four original tunes – "Line Up," "Requiem," "Turkish Mambo," and "East Thirty-Second" – Tristano actually overdubbed piano lines, and sped the tape up and down for effect.
