Su padre le inició en el estudio del solfeo y del violín a los 7 años. A los 14 años, ya en Barcelona, le vino el interés por la guitarra eléctrica. Autodidacto hasta entonces en el arte de tocar ese instrumento, en 1964 empezó a actuar con varios conjuntos de música de baile. Ampliaría sus conocimientos con los músicos que iba conociendo y con algún método de jazz de difícil obtención.

Although reeds, brass, and even guitars are tossed in here and there to help create what the liner notes describe as "an exotic picture of tropical wildlife," the main focus is on percussion and some of the best tracks are the ones where the other orchestra members probably stepped out for a cup of Joe. One hesitates at the thought of pumping further caffeine into the timbale-pummelling Puente or his cohorts on congas, guiros, bongos, and assorted other percussion. Listeners who think a computer is necessary to play as fast as the beats would get in 90's jungle music had better check this man's hands out. Highlight track is, hands down, the unforgettable "Witchdoctor's Nightmare," a great way to start off the sounds at any party.

Reflections of Brownie, by drummer Rayford Griffin—Clifford Brown's nephew—pays tribute to pioneering trumpeter, not by trying to replicate Brownie's 1950s sound, but by updating it and giving it a new millennium sheen. Oddly, and delightfully, for a set that modernizes Brown, the disc spins to life with the child-like voice of Pee Wee Marquette, the diminutive 1950s MC at New York's Birdland, introducing "the trumpet sensation, Clifford Brown," followed by a rousing round of applause before the new century band kicks in, with "Daahoud," from, originally, the Clifford Brown Max Roach. Griffin and the band get funky. A driving Brian Bromberg electric bass and Griffin's deep groove drumming drives the horns, a rotating cast of trumpeters and sax guys.

Angelica Sanchez and Marilyn Crispell, two powerful pianists and disciples of the spontaneous jazz, join forces for the first time on record. How To Turn the Moon features 10 tracks - seven short-form compositions by Sanchez, who penned them to be expanded in conjunction with Crispell, her former mentor, and three impromptu moments filled with synergistic stimulation and deep musical understanding.

This limited-edition anthology spotlights an impressive four-dozen previously unissued Diana Ross & the Supremes' selections from the seemingly infinite Motown archives. Of course there have been similarly copious collections of vintage Supremes' rarities, outtakes, remixes, and the like; most notably the highly collectable 25th Anniversary (1986) and Never Before Released Masters (1987), not to mention a plethora of additional multi-artist packages and expanded editions of classic Supremes' long-players. With such a myriad of previous outlets, one could easily presume that these 48 tracks are scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel. Luckily for aficionados and enthusiasts of Florence Ballard, Diana Ross, and Mary Wilson, there seems to be plenty of quality leftovers.
