This talented violinist here tries to cook up a pop pastiche and ends up making a real mess. A dash of new age, a slab of electronic dance, and a pinch of classical makes for an unappealing paella. Though her chutzpah is admirable, covering material by poet Robert Burns and disco queen Donna Summer, it doesn't justify the end result.

Léo Delibess Coppélia is not only a collection of fine dances. It is primarily an abrasive and sardonic comedy, which is somewhat unusual in the world of classical ballet. But most importantly, it is a comedy for which excellent music was composed. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovskys assessment of Delibess ballet scores, allegedly capable of overshadowing the choreography itself, is well known: What beauty, what elegance, what richness of melody, rhythm and harmony! It is not fortuitous that music from this ballet should be performed, for its own merits, during concerts. Funnily enough, the main theme of this light-hearted ballet is taken from E.T.A. Hoffmanns anything but joyful novellas mainly from The Sandman.

This is Annie Barbazza’s first solo album. She was a young drummer in love with progressive rock when Greg Lake discovered her talent as a singer and wanted her on stage with him for the concert which would later become the posthumous “Live in Piacenza”. Again Lake produced “Moonchild”, the duo with pianist Max Repetti for Manticore Records where she sang many songs formerly sang by Lake with ELP and King Crimson. If these were the beginnings of Annie’s career, now she is a rising star of the international Avant / Prog scene. Her friendship with John Greaves (Henry Cow, National Health …) leads her to collaborate permanently live with the Welsh musician and to collaborate on his latest albums (“Piacenza” for Dark Companion and “Life Size” for Manticore). Another one of her stable collaborations is the one with legendary writer-singer-songwriter Paul Roland with whom Annie regularly performs live as a bassist and singer and in the studio also as a drummer.

SMV unites music titans Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten. This unique alliance of three generations of bass gods has been on chat room and fan gathering wish lists for over 15 years, kept alive by periodic statements from all three that schedules permitting they would give it a go.

Stan Getz, one of the most gifted and influential of American jazzmen of his time and a consistent favorite of the U.S. public, was living since July 1958 in a small town outside Copenhagen, where he had started a new life. Like many American expatriate jazzmen, he found the relaxed European lifestyle more conducive to his creativity; there was more time to develop and try out new ideas. It was to prove an artistically flourishing and assertive time for him.

Raspy avant-garde tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp (who unfortunately also plays some soprano on this date) is the lead voice in a group that sometimes grows to 13 pieces, including four brass players, two keyboards and two percussionists, on this reissue. Two vocals and a poem recitation weigh down the music a bit, although Shepp gets in some good licks. The overall results are not essential, but Archie Shepp was still in his musical prime at the time.

Although it makes no mention of it anywhere on the package, The Gold Collection is actually a Count Basie live set and not the straightforward hits compilation it presents itself to be; although the song selection is fine (with "Lullaby of Birdland," "Jive at Five" and "How High the Moon" among the featured tracks), the fidelity is subpar, and with so many better Basie collections on the market this one is easy to avoid.

Issued in a standard jewel case including a 12-page booklet with liner notes in German and English. Michael Vetter, born in Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region of Germany in 1943, was a musician, painter, writer, and composer. His interest is in using different media (language, painting, photography, theatre, music) for the realisation of what he refers to as "Transverbal": Language is movement is music. A particular role was assigned to the voice, being the organ which, by interacting with the ear, musically interprets and considers movement in a most spontaneous, most abstract, most concrete and at the same most differentiated way. He gained worldwide fame for his art of overtone singing and experimental vocal improvisations.

After Burnin' Red Ivanhoe had stopped, Karsten Vogel (saxophone, keyboards) felt something new should happen. The first fusions bands appeared on the international scene, - inspired by this Karsten Vogel would make a band with direction towards a more modern sound. In the end this resulted in Secret Oyster, but before that Mermaid was put to sea. In many ways Mermaid was a perfect band: A mix between two famous Danish bands: Young Flowers, from where Peter Ingemann (bass, vocal) and Ken Gudmann (drums) was recruited, and Burnin Red Ivanhoe: Karsten Vogel and Ole Fick (guitar, vocal)…
