Replacing singer Dave Bickler with former Cobra vocalist Jimi Jamison paid off for Survivor, giving them three Top 20 singles from Jamison's debut on 1984's Vital Signs. His high harmonies, added to the group's well-maintained keyboard/guitar style, threw them into the ring with bands like Styx and Foreigner. Both "High on You" and "I Can't Hold Back" are built on congenial rock charm with an AOR dressiness, using the synthesizer to guide Jamison's energetic singing. Along the same lines as Journey's "Open Arms," the delicate but sternly sung ballad "The Search Is Over" gave them a number four single in May of 1985, bettered only by the number two placing of "Burning Heart" from the Rocky IV soundtrack a year later.

Recorded in 1989, Is That You? is very much a studio session, making ample use of overdubs and Bill Frisell's highly selective doubling on bass, banjo, ukulele, and clarinet, as well as his usual guitars. Producer Wayne Horvitz adds keyboards and some drum programming, with Joey Baron playing drums and Dave Hofstra appearing occasionally on tuba and electric bass.

Little Richard was not the only original rock & roller to attempt a comeback in the late '60s and early '70s, but he may have been the one to take the greatest musical risks. Fats Domino merely updated his sound (albeit in a charming fashion), Jerry Lee Lewis refashioned himself as a hardcore country singer, and Chuck Berry pandered with "My Ding-A-Ling," but Little Richard pushed himself on his three albums for Reprise, all of which were collected – along with his contributions to Quincy Jones' 1972 Dollar$ soundtrack album, non-LP singles, session outtakes, and a complete unreleased album from 1972 called Southern Child – in 2005 by Rhino Handmade for the triple-disc set The King of Rock and Roll.

One of Philadelphia International's most successful artists through the the '70s. His 1977 LP Unmistakably Lou won him a third Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and contained the R&B Top Ten hit "See You When I Git There"; later that year, he continued his artistic and commercial hot streak with When You Hear Lou, You've Heard It All and "Lady Love." The title track of 1979's Let Me Be Good to You was his last big hit with Philly International, reaching number 11 R&B. The following year, Rawls kicked off what would become a consuming passion for years to come: the Lou Rawls Parade of Stars Telethon, an annual event which eventually raised millions of dollars for the United Negro College Fund.

"Angel" is a collection of Rod Stewart's "love" songs from his Mercury years. As such, there are a number of tunes here that don't quite fit under the aegis of romantic love, but they all do signify something about the man's ability as a singer - in his heyday, of course - to bring the listener's heart first to the songs. The Mercury recordings are magical and almost ageless in their depth and breadth.

"Intuition" is the debut album by Britfunk band Linx, released in March 1981 on Chrysalis Records. Produced by David Grant, Peter Martin and Bob Carter of the group, the record followed the popular success of their UK hit single "You're Lying", which features on the album, and incorporates styles beyond funk music, such as rock, jazz and soul. Linx preferred to think of their style as simply pop music. The album's appearance in 1981 saw Linx ride the popularity of Britfunk in the United Kingdom, where they were among the scene's most successful acts alongside Level 42 and Freeez. It reached #8 on the UK Albums Chart and #175 on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart. The title track "Intuition" was a Top 10 hit in Britain, while "Throw Away the Key" made the Top 30. The album received positive reviews from music critics, who hailed its inventive sound and lyricism. In 2007, The Guardian included the album in their list of "1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die".

Reflecting the label's roots in Jamaica in the late 1950s, this 31-song collection celebrating Island's 25th anniversary includes the definitive reggae anthems "The Harder They Come" by Jimmy Cliff from the classic movie soundtrack of the same name and "No Woman No Cry" by Bob Marley. Capturing the playful side of Jamaica, there's the first hit for label founder Chris Blackwell, the infectious 1963 smash "My Boy Lollipop" by little Millie Small; "Israelites" by Desmond Dekker and the Aces, "Montego Bay" by Amazulu, "Sinsemilla" by Black Uhuru, and a rousing "Funky Kingston" courtesy of Toots and the Maytals. Illustrating how Island grew far beyond the confines of the Caribbean, the album also includes white rockers U2, Traffic, Free, Robert Palmer and Julian Cope. Throw in several ballads such as "Up Where We Belong" by Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley.

Jean-Yves Thibaudet has undertaken the complete solo piano works of another late nineteenth/early twentieth century French composer: Erik Satie. This even includes a sample of Vexations, that theme and two variations that Satie instructs to be played slowly, 840 times. It's interesting to compare Thibaudet's interpretations of these works with those of Aldo Ciccolini, who was one of Thibaudet's teachers. Overall, Thibaudet gives a less-Romantic interpretation, with less overt emotion and more introverted abstraction, but it is not overly academic.

An expanded edition with one bonus track (the lone 1976 single, "Straighten It Out" released by Atlantic), "Songs For Evolution" was produced & mostly written by the Philadelphia team of Joseph Jefferson & Charles Simmons, who had penned a number of classic ‘70s hits for the Spinners including "Games People Play," "Mighty Love" and "Love Don’t Love Nobody".
