Released a few months after she was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I Feel Love: The Collection is a fine if imperfect introduction to Donna Summer. It smartly includes the original version of "I Feel Love," as well as Patrick Cowley's towering 16-minute remix, and there are other essentials, including "Love to Love You Baby," "Bad Girls," "Hot Stuff," and "She Works Hard for the Money." The absence of several other career highlights – such as "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It," "Spring Affair," "State of Independence," and "Dinner with Gershwin" – is problematic, but this set scores points for its second disc, a showcase for her incredible side-length pieces.

Although the Raspberries lasted merely three years during the early 1970s, in retrospect, they would have a distinctive lasting influence on other bands to follow, including Cheap Trick, The Knack, The Romantics and countless others. While they were ridiculed relentlessly at the time, it is doubtful that the power pop movement of the late 1970s would have developed as it did without them, with fans and accolades from the likes of Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon. These incredible performances capture the band at two junctures in 1973 and 1974, pushing two albums (Side 3 and Starting Over), both containing signature songs of Eric Carmen and Wally Bryson, but distinctly different with the latter bearing a more formidable and heavier approach. The two shows here highlight the power pop charms of the band, all delivered with a salivating bite of the berry. Timeline revisits two classic performances from The Raspberries’ iconic heyday with fully restored and professionally remastered original FM radio broadcasts.

'This is the first time a radio station has let us play live since we were banned from WNEW in 1976'. Patti Smith's impassioned expletives seemed to symbolise the explosive reputation that followed her at the height of punk rock, but it didn't stop Oregon's KZEL from airing Patti Smith Group in their volatile prime. Poetry and punk were the bullets and guns of these iconic renegades whose vitriolic performances provided the requisite antidote for generations then, and now. Patti Smith's appearance at The Place in 1978 provides another prime chunk of punk 'n' roll history…. listen and learn! Timeline proudly presents a superbly remastered original broadcast by KZEL-FM of the Patti Smith Group, live in action from 1978.

Having risen to fame following her appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival, where she was the singer of the then little-known San Francisco psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis Joplin released two albums with the group, but left Big Brother at the end of 1968 to continue as a solo artist with her own backing groups, first the Kozmic Blues Band and then the Full Tilt Boogie Band. She appeared at the Woodstock festival and on the Festival Express train tour. Five singles by Joplin reached the Billboard Hot 100, including a cover of the Kris Kristofferson song ‘Me and Bobby McGee’, which reached number one posthumously, in March 1971.

There was always so much more to Mountain's output than those 'hits', largely due to the inspired contrasting of guitarist Leslie West, with his bellowing voice, with the much more smoothly melodic vocals of bassist Felix Pappalardi. They tended to sing their own compositions in the main, and the contrast both of singing and writing styles gave them similarities to the Lennon/McCartney dynamic, and it was this juxtaposition of the two which made Mountain’s all too brief early '70s peak so exciting. Equally compelling are their live performances from this era recorded for FM broadcast. These unique recordings capture the electrifying sense of power that this band could deploy on stage. Although they never achieved their deserved wider acclaim, Mountain's criminally short career would become hugely iconic and influential for any serious rock musician. Timeline revisits this incredible, classic performance from their New Year's Eve show in 1970 with a fully restored and professionally remastered original WNEW FM broadcast. These disc were recorded in 1995 during Charles Dutoit's long spell as artistic director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. During that time they made many outstanding recordings with a particular reputation for French and Russian music and a glorious sound recorded in Saint-Eustache church. Dutoit is an ideal conductor for Bizet's music, sufficiently romantic to bring out its drama without letting it become self-indulgent.

Music is about singing, dancing, life, and death. These are the kinds of things I learned from my teacher and mentor, the incredible Ukrainian pianist Mikhail (Misha) Alperin. Misha turned my world upside down from the moment we met. I was 19 then, and he continued to have a huge influence on me ever since. We didn't see each other very often in later years, but every time we did, I was filled with energy and inspiration. And in every meeting, he said at least one little thing that I would think about for months afterwards, whether it was during a brief conversation in the academy hallway, or a two-hour monologue in his office. He was intense. He celebrated life and love. He was singing, dancing and certainly living through his music. His death has left a void in our world that can never be filled, and he is sorely missed. Born in Bohemia in 1656 Fischer’s early musical educative experiences seem to have been lost. He was at the Piarist College in Schlackenwerth and clearly travelled. But our next substantive detail is that by 1690 he was court conductor at Sachsen-Lauenburg. The complexities of the marriages, regencies and instabilities of late seventeenth century nobility are briefly alluded to in the notes but what matters, as far as Fischer is concerned, is that the bulk of his printed compositions date from the years 1690-1715.

Instrumental Works collects ten of The Alan Parsons Project's best musical pieces and acts as a wonderful journey through some of this group's most innovative material. Although famous for his concepts, Alan Parsons is equally renowned for his illustrious mood-invoking instrumentals that helped create atmosphere on all of his albums. These movements can easily be taken away from their master albums without losing their grandeur and charm, unlike his vocal works that act as pieces in a thematic puzzle and are better left within their conceptual domain. Both intricacy and subtlety are depicted here, with selections such as "I Robot," "Paseo de Gracia," and "Hawkeye."

Bark, Jefferson Airplane's seventh album, was an album of firsts: it was the first Airplane album in almost two years, the first made after the arrival of violinist Papa John Creach and the departure of band founder Marty Balin, and the first to be released on the group's own Grunt Records label. It was also the first Airplane album made after the onset of that familiar rock group disease, solo career-itis. Rhythm guitarist Paul Kantner had released his Blows Against the Empire, and Hot Tuna, the band formed by lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady, had released two albums since the last Airplane group release, Volunteers. Bark, perhaps as a result, was not so much a group record as a bunch of songs made by alternating solo artists with backup by the other group members…

Easily one of the most important heavy metal albums ever released, Stained Class marks the peak of Judas Priest's influence, setting the sonic template for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal more than any other single recording. This is the point where Priest put it all together, embracing their identity as the heaviest band on the planet and taking the genre to new heights of power, speed, musicality, and malevolence. Not until Painkiller would the band again be this single-minded in its focus on pure heavy metal. Their blues-rock roots have been virtually obliterated; largely gone, too, are the softer textures and gothic ballads of albums past. The lone exception is the morbid masterpiece "Beyond the Realms of Death," on which the band finally finds a way to integrate the depressive balladry of songs like "Epitaph" and "Last Rose of Summer" into their metal side…
