In 1999 their UK tour was the biggest pop arena tour ever staged, and in a period of four years they sold a remarkable 12 million records. The quintet - brought together by songwriters Barry Upton and Steve Crosby with manager Tim Byrne - was made up of three female vocalists and two male - Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Lisa Scott-Lee, Ian "H" Watkins and Lee Latchford-Evans. After the debut single '5, 6, 7, 8' which peaked at #14, Steps hit the top 5 with 14 consecutive single releases - which at the time was a feat previously achieved only by the Beatles. This set includes the group's #1 hits 'Tragedy' and 'Stomp, all five #2 hits 'One For Sorrow', 'Better Best Forgotten', 'Love's Got A Hold Of My Heart' 'It's The Way You Make Me Feel', and 'Chain Reaction', and the other hits and more. Much of the music on this excellent (but obscure) Carmen McRae LP has not been reissued, and certainly not in complete form. Accompanied by an orchestra arranged and conducted by either Tadd Dameron or Jimmy Mundy, McRae performs both standards and obscurities, ballads and medium-tempo tunes. The big band is pretty anonymous but fine in ensemble work; the main focus is on the singer's voice anyway. Highlights include "Blue Moon", "My Foolish Heart", "I'm Putting All My Eggs In One Basket" and Mundell Lowe's "All This Could Lead to Love".

They created their own hybrid of instrumental music in the '60s and '70s, and it sure paid off! Over the last decades, South Africa has become a new hub for exploratory music and sound art. There a community of practitioners of experimental, improvisational, and otherwise avant-garde musicians is growing each year with a focus on creating a supporting, nurturing environment. With increased public exposure to these alternative forms of musical creativity, the future of this experimentation is bright. Music festivals like SENSA (Sonic Exploration Network Southern Africa) and other collective initiatives like the organization Edge of Wrong, collaborative projects between South Africa and Norway for experimental musicians are contributing to this new movement of artists in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and other places, making possible these innovative music hybrids between African folk tradition, jazz, improvised music, drone music, experimental electronic, and everything in between and beyond. In the present anthology, Unexplained Sounds Group tries to follow the most interesting clues of this emerging scene. From the graduated and high skilled musicians who have been featured in prestigious festivals all around the world, to the subterranean DIY artists who utilize this hybridization and deconstruction of popular music genres, we see a new movement in music growing year by year. Many of these new musicians bring together the folk tradition of various indigenous Southern African musical instruments and other music languages, in the contemporary spirit of preservation and innovation.

Alexey Zuev has a very special relationship with Stravinsky’s music. From the age of seven, it entered his musical universe like a premonition, when he unknowingly ‘composed’ a piece that bore astonishing similarities to Petrushka. Five years later, he discovered the ‘real’ Stravinsky and his music never left him.

Wolfgang Sawallisch was a German conductor and pianist, known for his refined interpretations of orchestral and opera repertoire. As a pianist, he was a revered accompanist and chamber musician, as well as an accomplished soloist. He was born in 1923 in Munich to Maria and Wilhelm Sawallisch, and had a brother named Werner who was older by five years. He started learning the piano at age five, and by the age of ten he had already decided that he wanted to be a concert pianist as an adult. Upon graduating high school in Munich in 1942, he studied piano with Wolfgang Ruoff until he was drafted into the military, where he served in France and Italy with the Wehrmacht, a branch of the Nazi armed forces. During the final stages of World War II in 1945 he was captured and held in a British POW camp.

Dr. Sarah Shin is a vibrant performer, educator, and collaborator. She is the Lecturer of Flute at Princeton University, a member of the Richardson Chamber Players, affiliated with Princeton University, and on the faculty at Rutgers University MGSA Community Arts as a flute instructor and chamber music coach. She has given master classes and workshops throughout the nation such as Carnegie Mellon University, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, University of Virginia Flute Forum, to name a few. Sarah is a William S. Haynes Artist and performs on a handmade custom Haynes 14k white gold flute.
