2016 release from the Dutch singer/songwriter. Fake It Till We Die is Anouk's eleventh studio album and the follow-up to Queen For A Day, which was released earlier this year. After Anouk Teeuwe's breakthrough in 1997, she's had numerous hit singles in the Dutch and Belgian charts. Anouk represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. Her song made it to the final - the first since 2004 for the Netherlands; and finished ninth. Anouk's musical style has been described as a combination of Joan Osborne, Melissa Etheridge and Alanis Morissette. She is known for explosive rock songs but has also made small and fragile songs. In addition to her pop/rock sound, she also experiments with soul, funk and hip hop.

Sade’s longest absence yet did not prevent their return from being an event. It at least seemed eventful whenever “Soldier of Love,” released to radio a couple months prior to the album of the same title, was heard over the airwaves. Even with its brilliantly placed lyrical allusions to hip-hop past and present and its mature sound, the single stuck out on stations aimed at teens and twentysomethings, as well as points on the dial that court an older audience. It was the most musical and organic, while also the most dramatic yet least bombastic, song in rotation. Crisp snare rolls, cold guitar stabs, and at least a dozen other elements were deployed with tremendous economy, suspensefully ricocheting off one another as Sade Adu rewrote “Love Is a Battlefield” with scarred, assured defiance.

Zito's 16th album is descriptively titled Rock N Roll: A Tribute to Chuck Berry. This release finds him broadening his boundaries still further even as it marks a return to his roots. The album consists of 20 Chuck Berry classics performed by Zito and an impressive array of 21 guest guitarists, among them Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout, Eric Gales, Robben Ford, Richard Fortus, Sonny Landreth, Luther Dickinson, Albert Castiglia, Anders Osborne, and, significantly, Chuck's grandson, Charlie Berry III.

Classics are classics for a reason, and this compilation champions them across two slabs of wax. All four sides are jam packed with firm reggae favourites from Bob Marley's stirring "Soul Rebel" to the buttery croons of Gregory Isaacs on "Babylon Too Rough". Mick Hucknall's inclusion will raise some eyebrows, but there is no denying his version of "Night Nurse" with Sly & Robbie has something going on. Smokers will delight in ganga odes from Eek-a-mouse and the lovable innocence of The Congos hit "La La Bam-Bam" will always have a place in anyone's affections.

One of the great aspects of the "Imaginary Blaxploitation soundtrack" compilations is that the supply of quality tunes is absolutely endless. Today's demand for 70s funk tunes, whether they be from obscure names, or legends of the genre like Sly Stone or Maceo Parke, is stronger than ever among those in search of supple, meaty basslines, tight backbeats and crisp funk. Blaxplosion has all the aspects necessary to keep a funk lover fan happy for decades, with enough of the legendary and the less well-known for it to rival most of the other collections out there. Instead of going for the obvious choices, it seems that there's been some digging in the vaults to pull out some obscure funk nuggets. Okay, there's not much here that could rival "Superfly", but still, all of the songs on here are enough to drag even the most resistant punter onto the dancefloor, and are filled with the sort of funk that puts today's acts to shame. Of course there's a little bit of filler, and the repetition that is a natural part of funk may grow tiresome if you're just listening rather than shakin' your tailfeather, but it's hard to imagine anyone not wanting to break out the corduroy flares and groove on down to this bad-ass compilation. –Thom Allott

The Busoni concerto, with its five movements, choral finale and a length of over 70 minutes, is surely the most grandiose ever written. But this is no over-ambitious monster; Busoni was one of the greatest pianists the world has known, but he was also a great intellectual with very strong views on art and culture. This work is the masterpiece of his middle years, more of a symphony in the breadth and scope of its ideas, but at the same time almost casually requiring the most formidable technical ability from the soloist. There is no doubt that this is one of music's major neglected masterpieces.

Jeff Beck found a kindred spirit in Johnny Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together. -Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. In 2020, during the pandemic, they previewed their collaboration with their well-timed cover of John Lennon’s “Isolation.” The duo’s 13-track album, dubbed 18, will arrive on July 15.
