Muddy Waters was the single most important artist to emerge in post-war American blues. A peerless singer, a gifted songwriter, an able guitarist, and leader of one of the strongest bands in the genre (which became a proving ground for a number of musicians who would become legends in their own right), Waters absorbed the influences of rural blues from the Deep South and moved them uptown, injecting his music with a fierce, electric energy and helping pioneer the Chicago Blues style that would come to dominate the music through the 1950s, ‘60s, and '70s. The depth of Waters' influence on rock as well as blues is almost incalculable, and remarkably, he made some of his strongest and most vital recordings in the last five years of his life.

As the youngest brother of the massively popular Gibb siblings, otherwise known as the Bee Gees, it's no wonder that Andy Gibb was a superstar in his own right. An accomplished vocalist and writer, Gibb shot to the top of the charts with his 1977 debut Flowing Rivers. Shadow Dancing, released just one year later, effortlessly confirmed his ascension to the top of the pop pedestal. Working with his brothers again, Gibb wowed audiences with his easy-on-the-ears passionate pop. He was well-suited to the era. The title track, which kicked off that year's string of hits, was nothing short of pure, smoldering disco. Written by all three of the Bee Gees (who also added backing vocals to the song), it hit the top of the charts, giving Gibb his third number one single and even more maximum exposure.

After receiving his musical training as a choirboy at the Cathedral of Saint-Sauveur at Aix-en-Provence, he succeeded his teacher Guillaume Poitevin as music master there. After moving on several times, he became music master at the Cathedral of St Etienne at Toulouse in 1697, as the successor of Andre Campra. His musical style was influenced by Campra, as were most musicians of his day. He composed motets and a famous requiem, which was performed for the first time at his own funeral (because the original commissioner thought it too expensive to perform), but was later sung at the funeral services for the King of Poland in 1736, Jean-Philippe Rameau in 1764, and Louis XV in 1774. His motets were played frequently from 1728-1771 at the Concert Spirituel.

After 10 years, atmospheric triprock band The Gathering has released a new album. ‘Beautiful Distortion’ is a typical eclectic The Gathering album, although it may be their ‘most dynamic and melodic’ album to date. The Gathering’s signature electronic rock sound is topped with warm Nordic vocals and beautiful vocal lines by Silje Wergeland. Producer Attie Bauw, who also produced The Gathering’s Home and How to Measure a Planet?, collaborated with them on their 11th full length studio album.

Less than two years after their last album, legendary Mexican Electro duo Hocico is once again filling the air with their unabashedly sound and strikes hard with their full range of aggression on the band's brand new album "HyperViolent". Latently menacing and rather insidiously rough as in "Broken Empires" or wrapped in a pulsating Dark'n'Bass tune as in the recently released single "Backstabbers" - Hocico doesn't play shy on any of the 13 tracks of their new longplayer. This also counts for the bonus track “Weapons of Resistance”, which features guest vocals from Ten56 frontman Aaron Matts and which, after previous collaborations with Lord Of The Lost and Ost+Front, means another straight banger, that makes noch only the Aggrotech heart beat faster. In 2022, heavy-hitter Hocico is still going strong in pushing boundaries and breaking old conventions - or simply said: "hyper hyper"!

The Best of the Manhattans: Kiss and Say Goodbye Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The Best of the Manhattans: Kiss and Say Goodbye is a terrific, 19-song overview of the Manhattans' recordings for Columbia in the '70s. All but two of the group's Top Ten R&B hits for the label are featured – there's no "We Never Danced to a Love Song" or "Crazy," but "There's No Me Without You," "Don't Take Your Love," "Hurt," "Kiss and Say Goodbye," "I Kinda Miss You," "It Feels So Good to Be Loved So Bad," "Am I Losing You," and "Shining Star" are all present – and several fine lesser-known singles and album tracks are added for good measure. Although the collection might be a bit too extensive for casual fans, it's the definitive overview of the Manhattans' time as a smooth soul group, illustrating how they helped develop the quiet storm subgenre.

Beth Carvalho is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, cavaquinist, and composer whose name is synonymous with samba, particularly the Mangueira school. Though she began recording with Os Gatos in the mid-'60s, her run of solo albums between 1974's Pra Seu Governo and 1988's Alma Do Brasil is almost unparalleled in Brazilian MPB for their consistently high quality. She has recorded the works of now-legendary samba composers such as Nelson Cavaquinho, Guilherme de Brito, and Cartola, supporting them long before the listening public did; she assisted mightily in making them household names in Brazil. Though she is a long-established member of the Mangueira school of samba, she has also recorded dozens of songs by composers associated with the Portela school, as well as the work of songwriters from the pagode style such as Almir Guineto and Jorge Aragão…

Side project from Katatonia main men Jonas Renske and Fredrik Norrman, October Tide celebrated the melodic, ambient doom side of Katatonia's sound. Featuring brand-new artwork and remixing/engineering by Dan Swanö, this edition of Rain Without End recalls the intense, brooding melancholy of mid-1990s European metal. A dark release, even by today’s standards, October Tide’s debut is a testament to the inventiveness of two of metal’s understated visionaries.

Concrete Blonde's entry in Capitol's Essential series is similar to its Classic Masters retrospective from 2002. In fact, it's exactly the same track listing until Essential opts for "Happy Birthday" and "Sun," two tracks from 1989's Free. But neither collection adequately replaces 1996's comprehensive, out of print Recollection: The Best of Concrete Blonde, and Essential only goes as far as the 1992 LP Walking in London, excluding the following year's Mexican Moon. It's also curious that nothing unreleased could be scrounged from the vaults for this set. Still, diehards can cover with 2003's Live in Brazil (Ark 21), meaning Essential is probably OK for the casual Concrete fan. It's in chronological order for one thing, beginning with the fabulously hungry "Still in Hollywood" and rolling right through to "Caroline," "Joey," and "Tomorrow, Wendy" from the 1990 breakthrough, Bloodletting. The band's atmospheric cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing" dates from the same year, as does a live version of "Roses Grow." (Both were originally released on the Caroline single.) It might have switched out "Sun" for "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)." And it really could have used the title track to Mexican Moon. But otherwise, Essential is a pretty satisfactory overview of Concrete Blonde's IRS output.

TO VENUS AND BACK pairs a disc of studio tracks with a disc of live concert recordings. The first disc features some of Amos' most electronic-sounding productions to date. Though her acrobatic singing is given its usual full rein, many of the studio songs feature intricate, effects-rich orchestrations. The album-opening "Bliss" begins as a windswept soundscape, only to open up into a hook-laden chorus. "Juarez" is an intoxicating stew of disembodied voices, roiling synthesizers, and propulsive percussion. "Glory of the '80s" visits a night of drug-fueled hedonism during a decade that defined excess. "Josephine" is a standout track that will appeal to fans of Amos' more open, piano-centered work. The second disc culls tracks from Amos' 1998 Plugged Tour. The live rendering of "Cornflake Girl" is a particularly stirring affair, noteworthy for Amos' vocal bravura and for the cascading sheets of piano that she adds during the song's climax. Also featured is "Cooling," a track that Amos has never committed to album. No Tori Amos fan will want to be without TO VENUS AND BACK. Album was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
