After countless solo guitar albums for Pablo, Joe Pass performed this welcome change of pace, a set of Brazilian tunes. Joined by fellow guitarist Oscar Castro Neves, bassist Octavio Bailly, drummer Claudio Slon, percussionist Paulinho da Costa and keyboardist Don Grusin, Pass plays warm solos on a variety of Brazilian tunes. Highlights include three songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim (including "Corcovado" and "Wave"), Deodato's "Tears," and Luiz Bonfa's "The Gentle Rain." A melodic and infectious date that has been reissued on CD.

The Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim grew up in the provincial coastal city of Trondheim. It was calm and quiet, there were no crowds and he could hike in the wooded hills, with their trails and camp-sites. He really liked it there. Just released, Seim's first album as a leader - Different Rivers - sounds organized and clean, cold and uncrowded like that. … Different Rivers is melancholy, lonely, hypnotizing music - harder to escape from than to listen to. Like a fireplace in an ice palace, you get hooked on it; it's almost physical. … Seim's version of the ECM sound presents a wind-instrument chamber ensemble, a sort of slow-floating, pianissimo little-big band with occasional understated kicks. The shadow of Gil Evans hovers. The hornblowers finesse their personal, breathy, nonsymphonic textures from behind the beat.

Fridrich Bruk – born in Kharkov in 1937 and a Finnish resident since 1974 – made his name as a composer of tangos. But the heart of his music lies in a series of (to date) 21 symphonies, which have a strong narrative element, some reflecting Jewish themes, others inspired by Karelia and Finland. The three most recent together form a kind of meta-symphony premised on the persecution of the Jews in the first half of the twentieth century. Bruk’s kaleidoscopic use of orchestral colour, his angular but expressive melodies and his dramatic musical language reflect this urge to chronicle the outrage visited on his fellow Jews – and which directly impinged on his own life.

Dividing his time between the United States and the United Kingdom, the composer Geoffrey Gordon writes music that has been described as "darkly seductive" (The New York Times), "richly satisfying" (BBC Music Magazine) and "iridescent and fierce" (The Chicago Tribune). The present, amply-filled album brings together three of his recent works, all composed between 2013 and 2018 for the soloist recording them here, the Danish cellist Toke Møldrup. In several of his works, Gordon takes his inspiration from other art forms sculptures by Giacometti, a self portrait by Warhol, a childrens picture book by Maurice Sendak.

The second ECM album by Norwegian cooperative group The Source gets back to basics. Since its formation in 1993, when founder-members Trygve Seim, Øyvind Brække and Per Oddvar Johansen were all students at the Trøndelag Conservatory of Music in Trondheim, The Source has been very much a moveable feast, its motto, "No two concerts alike!" The group has embraced the wildest stylistic collisions, working variously with poets and DJs, rai vocalists and rappers, ice hockey players, and conceptual and performance artists. Their collaborators have ranged from rock band Motorpsycho to classical musicians including the Cikada String Quartet (as on their 2000 ECM recording The Source and Different Cikadas). Nonetheless, the overwhelming majority of their performances have been as a quartet, most of their music was written for quartet, and this eponymously titled disc addresses a backlog of much-played material whose appearance on disc is overdue.

Cole Porter left a musical legacy that earned him great respect far beyond the world of popular music: more than 40 of his musicals and countless melodies became evergreens, while their lyrics became quoted in daily life. His songs, with their ease, elegance, refinement and drive have fascinated musicians of all genres ever since. Juliane Banse is one of the most versatile singers of her generation with a repertoire ranging from Mozart to Richard Strauss, from unknown operas to the most current modern music. It was only a question of time before she would turn to Cole Porter, hence this album, recorded in the autumn of 2018. And she has to be credited for not trying to copy Ella Fitzgerald, for example, but for singing Porter in her own way; for retaining her clearly intoned, classically trained voice, and not awkwardly acting the part of a husky bar singer. Banse perfectly interprets the roles in her very own way, turning between the ironic, erotic, lascivious and vigorous, with all the necessary syncopated swing. Fans of American entertainment and those lovers of beautiful singing who have an open mind will all find pure delight in this recording.

In 1989, Omar Hakim released his first solo album, Rhythm Deep, which occupied a middle ground between jazz, R&B, and pop, and gave him a chance to showcase his vocal abilities as well. The results earned Hakim a Grammy nomination.

Gianluca De Rossi (Keyboards & vocals), David Guidoni (Percussions) & Guglielmo Mariotti (Bass, guitar, mandoline & vocals) consist in the spinal column of the current Italian trio Taproban. The name of the band has been inspired by the former name of the island of Ceylan, today known as Sri-Lanka. Still led by GianLuca De Rossi, Taproban associates the Latin words "Strix" (Witch) and "Stigma" (Brand), to create the title of its fourth effort: "Strigma". Published in the year 2013 on the Musea label, the latter is introduced by a beautiful painting, melting the female gender with fire. The three epic pieces reveal themselves as true Seventies-tinged gems, a true delight for all Progressive rock lovers out there.
