Hasretim (“My Longing”) is a multi-media exploration of musical roots, and a musical search for cultural identity. In 2009, Guitarist and composer Marc Sinan embarked on an unusual journey, its route leading from the Black Sea coast, where his grandparents lived, to the Armenian border. En route he located and filmed traditional musicians, players whose craft is dying today, capturing a music that speaks of restlessness and temperament, and bears the footprints of Anatolia’s cultural and ethnic diversity. In Hasretim, Marc Sinan’s musical findings are integrated into his own contemporary music for mixed ensemble (orchestrated and arranged by Andrea Molino) with Turkish and Armenian guests.

What may seem odd on paper makes more sense in sonic terms: the trio of bassist Jonas Hellborg, guitarist Shawn Lane and virtuosic South Indian udu player V. Selvaganesh works up a kind of sensitive fury in the zone where Indo-jazz-rock and cross-cultural ambient concepts meet. John McLaughlin (with whom Hellborg played way back when) has been here before, the mixture of fusion and classical Indian materials. In the case of this group, it comes in the form of harmonic vocabulary from rock, and rhythms that lean towards the suppleness and intricacy from the Carnatic side of things.

You don’t come to Chromatics for the songs so much as the opportunity to linger in the world in which the songs transpire: Eerie, stylish, unsettled but seductive—a horror movie so pretty you don’t see the silver for blade or the red for blood until it’s too late. Surprise-released in late 2019 after a years-long period during which they teased an entirely different album (the hypothetical Dear Tommy, whose 25,000 physical copies producer/songwriter Johnny Jewel supposedly destroyed), Closer to Grey leans on the lighter side of the band’s sound, shifting between beatless meditations (“Wishing Well”, an unnerving take on “The Sound of Silence”) and brittle, ethereal synth-pop (“You’re No Good”, the downtempo “Light as a Feather”).

A 1982 production starring superstar Luciano Pavarotti as Idomeneo, the tortured king of Crete, with Ilena Cotrubas and Frederica von Stade along with Hildegard Behrens providing the mad scenes!

Thirty-nine years and 18 albums later finds Tower of Power perhaps at the peak of their form … and then some. With about 60 personnel changes in their lineup from the start it’s just about even money that some founding members are more about playing shuffleboard and trading “medicine cabinet” stories than blasting out some of the finest jazz/funk/soul to grace the airwaves. This current effort existing primarily of “cover versions” of classic tunes receives a freshening via the importation of some of the finest musicians of the current musical stage. Joss Stone, Sir Tom Jones, Huey Lewis and even Sam Moore lend extremely cohesive contributions to the tunes corralled here.
