Chuck Berry (born October 18, 1926, St. Louis, Missouri, USA - died March 18, 2017, St. Charles County, Missouri, USA) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of rock and roll music. Inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

This is a delightful, inventive, witty, charming, enchanting, inspiring disc. In the Verbruggen disc, only four of the six sonatas appear together, plus one other trio sonata (BWV 1031). Perhaps Ms. Verbruggen thought that BWV 526 and 528 did not translate well to the recorder. In any event, the recorder and the harpsichord are outstanding here, as is the recording quality. Highest recommendation.

Consider that he retired from the music business before he graduated high school. And consider that he was between eight and fourteen years old when he made these recordings (also available on the Classics label,) which makes this release of vintage blues from the child prodigy an important document. Similar in looks to latter period child star Gary Coleman, and similar stylistically to the barrelhouse pianists who preceded him, he was a phenomenon, but hardly a novelty act. Mal Waldron's recording debut as a leader presents the pianist with his many gifts already well developed. For the 1956 quartet date, he takes charge to strike a balance between the sound of a blowing session and the refinement of a more polished date. The spontaneity is there, but the set also benefits from Waldron's thoughtful charts. At this stage of his development, Waldron was a distinctive bop pianist whose occasional sputtering, knotty phrasing revealed the acknowledged influence of Thelonious Monk, as well as similarities with contemporaries Al Haig and Bud Powell. For this set, though, the focus is not on Waldron's playing, but on his ability to lead from the piano bench…
