Few vocalists have gone through as many permutations in their career in popular music in the manner of Paul Nicholas. Best known as a singer, Nicholas began his career in professional music at the keyboard at age 19, playing piano with Screaming Lord Sutch and his backing band, the Savages, in 1964. He didn't remain with the band too long, however, choosing to give up playing full-time in favor of studying drama and developing his acting skills. Nicholas continued to record occasionally, but despite his access to early compositions by Pete Townshend ("Join My Gang") and David Bowie ("Over the Wall We Go"), he failed to chart a single with any of his work. In 1968, Nicholas joined the British cast of the musical Hair, which was brought to London in 1968 by Robert Stigwood in the lead role of Claude.

On their tenth studio album, the 1991 originating band Fool's Garden, presents themselves as very mature and versatile. Their current album ''Rise and Fall'' offers a variety of songs, which not only show themselves very independently, but also maintain classic-timeless qualities in composition, interpretation and arrangement. ''This time we let a very special discipline prevail in writing the songs,'' says singer Peter Freudenthaler. A song could not be set aside until it was fully complete in its structure, so that it could later be recorded in our own studio. It was an audibly effective as well as creative work process with impressive results! The 14 melodious titles cover a wide range of styles. This can be seen in titles such as, the opulently arranged mid-tempo opus ''I Burn'' (reminiscent due to the falsetto chorus of a-ha or Coldplay), or there is the acoustic ballad Marie Marie, or the atmospheric, minimalist ''All We Are,'' which Freudenthaler dedicated to his son. And with the electronic vibe of ''Still Running,'' Fool's Garden taps into new terrain!

The U.K. release Love, Whitney isn't meant to be a greatest-hits collection. Instead, as its title implies, it's an assortment of big, swooping Whitney Houston love songs, with no new material, consisting entirely of tracks taken from her previous albums. What it could have been was a companion piece to her Greatest Hits, which left many people dissatisfied, especially since it included inferior, remixed versions of many of her signature songs. However, almost all of the songs on this album are also found on disc one of the greatest-hits collection. To its credit, this disc does include some lovely Whitney nuggets left off the U.K. version of her hits set, such as "Why Does It Hurt So Bad" and "Miracle," and great non-hits such as "For the Love of You."

STUNNING 1986 SHOW FROM NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE • In July 1986, Neil Young released his 15th Studio album, Landing On Water. Recorded without Crazy Horse and to little great acclaim, the record only reached No.46 on the Billboard chart. But young re-united with the mighty Horse for the subsequent tour and his next record Life. • And while Landing On Water was generally considered to be lack-lustre, the tour was anything but. Performing only a couple of numbers from the recent release, set-lists were made up from NY classics and tracks from recent releases, largely resulting in a number of shows considered by fans to be some of the best Neil and Crazy Horse ever performed. • And when the band’s tour bus pulled up outside The Market Square Arena in Indiana, on 23rd October ’86, one such show was about to take place. Among the best gigs of the whole tour, the concert was broadcast across local FM Radio, and remains a live spectacular, even 35 years since it was performed. • Now released for the first time on this 2xCD set, fans are now able to share in a stunning concert by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, previously unavailable.

Back in 1978 when this set was recorded, fusion (the mixture of jazz improvisation with rock rhythms) was declining. Keyboardist Joe Sample, best-known for his work with the Crusaders, was in the process of being one of the founders of "contemporary jazz," an idiom that has since solidified into smooth jazz. Sample emphasized catchy melodies, light funk rhythms, appealing chord changes and a pop sensibility. For this accessible release, Sample is joined by the late legendary guitarist Billy Rogers, bassist Pops Popwell, his old Crusaders drummer Stix Hooper, a horn section and several guest guitarists. All eight tunes (which include "Fly with the Wings of Love" and "Islands in the Rain") are by the leader, who is heard throughout in melodic form, setting up a variety of light grooves that serve as superior background music.

EXCEPTIONAL, EARLY LIVE US BROADCASTS FROM PROCOL HARUM Procol Harum s third album, A Salty Dog (1969), was popular among both fans and critics alike and was the group s first album to sell well in the UK. The title track gained major US FM radio airplay and saw the band s profile rise significantly. Between the recording of the record in January 69, and its release in June, the mighty Harum hit the road, performing shows in both Europe and in the US. On March 16th the group were on the East Coast of America and performed at Bill Graham s Fillmore East venue in New York, where they put on a quite majestic show which included cuts from all the group s releases to date. Tracks one thru nine on this CD now feature the full show Procul Harum played at this stunning show, which took place more than fifty years ago. A few weeks later the group were on the West Coast, and in early April they played a short set at LA s Troubadour, which featured quite possibly the best live version of Whiter Shade Of Pale ever committed to tape (both shows here were recorded for live FM radio broadcast). DYNAMIC AND INTENSE BROADCAST RECORDING FROM FLOYD’S THIRD US TOUR • Recorded on Pink Floyd's third American tour, this show introduced San Francisco to some of the newer material from the Ummagumma LPs, and a taste of things soon to come on Atom Heart Mother, to be released later that year. This San Francisco audience is particularly quiet and attentive, a fact that seems to have facilitated a more intimate, unique and focused performance than other dates on this tour. • This show begins in a quiet, pastoral manner and continues to build in intensity as the sets progress. Of particular note in the first set are "Cymbaline" and the unreleased "Embryo," as well as the entire suite of "Atom Heart Mother." • After the acoustic opener to the second set, "Green Is the Colour," the band takes off into the outer realms of musical exploration for the rest of the evening. The last three compositions, in particular, show the band in an adventurous mood with standout performances of tracks from their first two albums. Following the marathon, 22-plus minute encore of "Saucerful of Secrets," the audience brings them back for a rare second encore of "Interstellar Overdrive." • Earlier this same day, the band had taped a memorable live performance for KQED TV in San Francisco. This tour met with disaster a few weeks later when the band's equipment was stolen during a multi-night engagement at the Warehouse in New Orleans. The rest of the tour was cancelled. Fortunately for fans of Pink Floyd, however, this broadcast recording remains - an earnest, unique perspective of the band in a formative time of their career.

The stellar young Capuçon brothers seem incapable of setting a foot wrong on disc and they put their considerable chamber-music experience to great use in Brahms's final orchestral work, with cellist Gautier Capuçon proving an eloquent lead in the vehement first movement.

For most genre fans John Elefante needs no introduction. But for the youngsters out there … Vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer John Elefante is the guy who replaced the guy, Steve Walsh, in Kansas in 1981. (Elefante beat out, among others, Sammy Hagar and Doug Pinnick for the job.) He would record two albums with Kansas, Vinyl Confessions and Drastic Measures. To the former, he was the vocalist on the mega-hit, Play The Game Tonight; to the latter, he wrote Fight Fire With Fire, Kansas' biggest single to date.

This album presents some of the all-time “classics” of the classical trumpet repertoire. After much deliberation on how, when, what and why, trumpeter Omar Tomasoni explains that two specific events convinced him that now was the time to make the recording: the birth of his son Siebe and the pandemic. The programme includes Brandt’s Concertpieces No. 1 and No. 2, Françaix’s Sonatine for Trumpet, Enescu’s Legend for Trumpet and Piano, and Honegger’s Intrada. For a newly commissioned piece by Rob Goorhuis, entitled Canzoni, the two main performers here are joined by saxophone player Femke IJlstra. The album is concluded by Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, arranged for trumpet and piano by Timofei Dokschitzer.

Ghost Song features a diverse mix of seven originals and five interpretations on the themes of ghosts, nostalgia, and yearning. Salvant says, “It’s unlike anything I’ve done before—it’s getting closer to reflecting my personality as an eclectic curator. I’m embracing my weirdness!”Ghost Song opens and ends with a sean-nós (traditional Irish unaccompanied vocal style) performance by Salvant, recorded in a church. On track one, she transitions into Kate Bush’s 1978 classic “Wuthering Heights.”

Probably the most popular release of Marley live, this concert has been newly remastered! This June 1977 concert at London's Rainbow Theater captures the recently reconfigured Wailers ending a European tour to promote the Exodus album. The rare performances of "Trenchtown Rock," "Rebel Music," and "Crazy Baldhead" from the earlier Wailers repertoire are the treasures of this collection, but the whole thing is simply a "must-have".
