“Gergiev conducts a sweeping performance, with a typically superb cast of the Kirov's revival years, full of rising stars - Diadkova, Ognovenko, Bezzubenkov and the superb character tenor Gassiev. Charming also is the staging, reproduced from airy, painterly 1920s sets. Museum opera, maybe; but then museums are there to preserve treasures. And this is an absolute gem.”(Music Magazine)

You’ve found the modern, sophisticated style of Second Story. Recording and performing in the Philadelphia region from 1996-2004, this female-fronted quintet created a truly original brand of music. Often called “Neo-Prog” or “Sympho” – their unique brand of pop/rock blurs the line between commercial, “radio-ready” rock and a more progressive, conceptual sound. Combining elements from lush pop to progressive rock, with electronic and hard rock mixed in for good measure, Second Story created music that was impossible to pigeon-hole – and wowed audiences with their technical and note-perfect shows. It’s progressive music for people who don’t think they like progressive music. “Thin Twisting Line” is the long-awaited second album from Second Story. Original recording sessions began in 2001, but many unfortunate roadblocks and delays befell the band, which meant that it was not released while we were still performing.

The prospect of hearing Alina Ibragimova in two of the most important concertos written for the violin is in itself irresistibly enticing, but Shostakovich acionados will also welcome an opportunity to hear the rarely performed original opening to the Burlesque of No 1, subsequently made less fearsome for the soloist at the request of the works dedicatee, David Oistrakh.

The drummer with the very successful rock group Journey for seven years, Steve Smith left the band in 1985 to devote his career to jazz and specifically his group Vital Information. This CD is taken from their tour of August 1989 and features Smith's unit (which also includes Larry Schneider on reeds, guitarist Frank Gambale, keyboardist Tom Coster, and bassist Larry Grenadier) playing a strong set of group originals plus the standard "I Should Care" (a straight-ahead feature for Coster and the rhythm section). Although Coster uses electronics on some of the pieces, much of his date is simply high-quality acoustic jazz; even the funkier material swings.

It's well known that most of Bach's harpsichord concertos began their lives as violin concertos. Since only three violin originals survive–the ones designated as BWV 1041-43–and since these are among his greatest instrumental works, musical scholars and performers have been reversing the process, turning the harpsichord concertos back into violin originals. BWV 1060 is one such case, a concerto for two harpsichords, which sounds much less clangy and bangy in this reconstructed version for two violins.

Steve Smith played drums with Rock legends, "Journey" and this was one of his first albums with his new Jazz group. The music on this showcases the fine talent of Smith's drum playing. The tracks "Maltese Connection" and "50/50" are the highlights of the recording. The CD has been out of print for a while so finding it will be a challenge.

It is a crime that these pieces are not better known. They are extraordinary, of great depth, truly beautiful, and highly addictive. That's all I have to say. Great music performed with gusto. Classical training and virtuosity is self evident. I enjoyed this CD very much. Composer and lyricist Dana Suesse was a child prodigy, giving her first concert, a Rachmaninoff prelude, at the age of nine. At 16 she moved to New York and began composing songs.
