Classical | Label: Quintone | Recorded: 2007

This 2007 recording of J.S. Bach's Johannes Passion, featuring Concerto d'Amsterdam and the Flemish vocal ensemble La Furia, uses the 1725 version of the piece, which substitutes some movements (most noticeably the opening chorus) more staid than those of the 1724 version. That decision to go for restraint rather than passion carries over to the performance style, as well, which tends to be reserved and tastefully correct rather than stirringly dramatic. It couldn't be characterized as flaccid because there is certainly a high energy level when appropriate, but even in these sections the performers seem more concerned with brisk precision than with stirring the blood.

The follow-up to his smash 2009 concert album Live in Boston, Chris Botti's studio album Impressions features more of the cool trumpeter's crossover jazz, pop, and classical stylings. Focusing on Botti's love of melody, Impressions is an aesthetically varied album featuring works by classical composers Frederic Chopin and Astor Piazzolla as well as standards by George Gershwin and Harold Arlen. While Botti's virtuoso playing is always the focal point of his albums, here we get more of his acclaimed collaborations, including tracks with such artists as jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, guitarist Mark Knopfler, country singer Vince Gill, composer/pianist/producer David Foster, and more.

They got stuck in Paris and formed the band "Aphrodite's Child". They recorded a song, "Rain and Tears", inspired by Pachelbell's famous canon and released it as a single. It became a huge success ranking at the top of the charts in several European countries.

Despite the absence of Joe Sample and Larry Carlton, Tom Scott's L.A. Express remains very Crusaders-influenced on Tom Cat – a highly accessible jazz-funk-R&B date that, as commercial as it is, leaves room for inspired blowing courtesy of both the leader and sidemen like electric guitarist Robben Ford and keyboardist Larry Nash. Sweaty, hard-hitting jazz-funk is the rule on such down-home grooves as "Good Evening Mr. & Mrs. America & All the Ships" and "Day Way," which allow the players to let loose, blow, and say what needs to be said. "Love Poem" is a pleasant, likable piece of delicate mood music (but not "Muzak"!) that features wordless vocals by pop-folk singer Joni Mitchell and has a slightly Flora Purim-ish appeal.

"On his debut solo album the Russian pianist Alexey Pudinov (*1988) plays a very diverse program, which can only escape the impression of a hodgepodge if the interpretations are continuously exciting. In the interpretation of the second Brahms sonata Pudinov shows immediately the outstanding level of his performing. His highly musical and very spontaneous performance is never dominated by sound masses, but remains clear and transparent even in massive passages, even somehow light and flexible."

CAROLYN ANN FRANKLIN spent her singing and song writing career somewhat in the shadow of her hugely successful sister, The First Lady Of Soul, Aretha, having followed both her older siblings Aretha and Erma from the church into a secular recording career in the mid to late sixties. Although, Like Erma, Carolyn had modest success compared to Aretha she recorded with her sister many times and proved herself as an excellent songwriter penning hits for Aretha such as ‘Ain't No Way,’ ‘Save Me’ and the stunning ‘Angel.’ From 1969-1973 Franklin released three albums in produced by Jimmy Radcliffe which provided the R&B hits ‘All I Want To Be Is Your Woman’ and ‘It's True I'm Gonna Miss You,’ proving Carolyn was an exceptional vocalist in her own right.

Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas is a charming, warmly humorous – and yes, swinging – set of classic Christmas tunes. The program is familiar, from bouncy singalongs like "Jingle Bells" to slinky ballads like a downright sexy "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," but Fitzgerald treats each song with exactly as much respect as it deserves…

This is a great snapshot of Byas at Ronnie Scott's. One of the great benefits of soloists coming to Ronnie's was that the house band was so brilliant. Stan Tracey was and is just wonderful. You would not think they had not been playing together for years. The choice of material is irrelevant in some ways they just get into the music and play, wonderful stuff. Byas had been living and working in France for many years when he came to London and he died just a few years after this recording. Stan Tracey was working himself into the ground, compounded by an all too common drug problem, however, his single-mindedness, when it came to his music, really does shine through in everything he plays, the guy really does live his music.

When Charlie Parker died unexpectedly on March 12, 1955, at the age of 34, the jazz world was devastated. Almost immediately, "Bird Lives!" graffiti began to appear around New York City, while musicians paid tribute, through live performances of his music, to the man who had done so much to revolutionize jazz. A memorial live performed in 1991 in memory of Parker by a bop pianist loved by both Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Harold Jeffta from South Africa played the role of Parker. Few organ players can kick into swinging grooves with as relaxed a feeling as those Shirley Scott generates on these two outstanding sessions from the Sixties. She was associated early in her career with tenor saxophonists–most notably Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Stanley Turrentine–but Prestige Records regularly varied the settings in which she was presented on disc. These are two of the most unusual. The ever-tasteful guitarist Kenny Burrell shares the spotlight on tracks one through six, while Lem Winchester lends his vibraharp mastery to the remainder to help create a unique–and ultimately satisfying– organ/vibes front-line.
