In 2008, the venerable British hard rock band Uriah Heep released Wake the Sleeper, their first new studio album in ten years. It is not unusual, of course, for a band to play several songs from a new album in concerts around the time of release. Two years later, however, Uriah Heep are heard on this concert recording playing seven of the selections from Wake the Sleeper out of 15 songs in the show. Lead singer Bernie Shaw acknowledges that the set list is "a mixture of the old and the new," after announcing, "We've got 40 years of Uriah Heep music." So they do, even if they don't actually play songs from across the 40 years.

Raven Sad is a project instigated by Italian Samuel Santanna in 2005. The artistic goal is to create emotionally challenging music by blending elements from folk, psychedelic and progressive rock mixed with electronic textures and ambient passages. So far this has resulted in four albums, "Quoth" (2008), and "We Are Not Alone" (2009), "Layers of Stratosphere" (2011), and "The Leaf And The Wing" (2021), all issued by Italian label Lizard Records. With the 2011 album Raven Sad has morphed from a one-man (with friends) vehicle to a proper four-piece band.

“Songs of Freedom” is not my title. I borrowed it from Bob Marley, one of the world’s greatest musical figures. This album is a tribute to those musicians who established Pop Culture in the 70’s with their mythic songs. So mythic, that they now belong to everybody on the planet and so global that they are World Music i.e. “music the world listens to”. Yet Music is like a bird: once released, it flies to every sky. The Earth becomes rounder and rounder, inviting cultures to chat and soak up one another. Hence, the freedom to make these songs our own. Still lovingly playing these original melodies with the audacity of new arrangements which celebrate the reign of imagination and fantasy.

World-premiere recording: Pietro Gnocchi was not only cathedral chapel master in the northern Italian city of Brescia, and indeed for over a half a century until his death at the advanced age of eighty-six, but also a priest, archeologist, geographer, and fluent in many languages. Apart from sacred vocal music, this impressive polymath also left behind several instrumental works: surprisingly, the present concertos for stringed instruments and basso continuo are heavily contrapuntal, much is inspired by the stilo antico.

One of Taylor Deupree’s many side projects on the Instinct Ambient record label. Good example of early american ambient. Slow and meditative most of the time, almost lounge-like at points, it's actually quite difficult to listen to it all the way through, but worth it in the end.

Abbhama was born in 1977 and was the brainchild of the talented keyboardist Iwan Madjid, who was clearly influenced by Yes, Genesis, ELP and all the Symphonic icons but with also a strong French and Italian influence, the special touch are the lyrics sung in their native language and the clear ethnic influences. The addition of Oboe by Hendro (that's how the musician is credited) gave them a very special and unique taste. Due to the strong and characteristic Indonesian sound, Abbhama could have a place in Folk Prog, but the essence of their music is clearly Symphonic. Sadly their story ends with the release of Alam Raya, proving once more that you don't only need to be skilled but also require to have the luck of being born in a country with a strong musical industry.

Originally released in December of 1963, Yesterday's Love Songs/Today's Blues was the eighth in a long series of albums Nancy Wilson was to make for Capitol Records over a period of 20 years. During that time, she became one of the label's most artistically and commercially successful artists. The album was also made during the time when major recording companies were turning out sessions featuring black female singers with a gospel and/or blues background, singing standards and pop hits backed by a large orchestra, usually with strings. Columbia Records had Aretha Franklin, Everest used Gloria Lynne, and Capitol, Nancy Wilson. Here, teamed with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra and his arrangements, Wilson wends her way through 17 standards and traditional pop songs with a good balance between ballads and up-tempo numbers…

Across 24 numbered sonatas, a divertimento, a set of variations and a handful of works for keyboard duet, František Xaver Dušek comes to life as not merely a Czech contemporary of Mozart but the father of the Czech piano school.

A musical conclusion to an unusual year: the programme of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s traditional New Year’s Eve concert, which took place on 31 December 2020 under the baton of chief conductor Kirill Petrenko in an empty Philharmonie Berlin, reflected the various facets of the past year. As a reminder of the production of Fidelio which was cancelled due to the corona pandemic, the concert opened with the Leonore Overture No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The Philharmoniker struck a reflective and melancholy note in Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas brasileiras No. 4, while celebrating the joyful music of the Iberian Peninsula in Manuel de Falla’s Introduction and “Ritual Fire Dance” from El amor brujo, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol. Together with star guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas, the orchestra took an evocative tour of the gardens of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez in Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

The early-music cellist Renato Criscuolo and his Musica Perduta ensemble have specialized in reviving vocal and chamber music by Italy-based composers from the 17th and 18th centuries, producing well-received albums of Francesco Maria Zuccari (94306), Nicola Porpora (95279), Pergolesi (94763), Handel (94426) and others. Their latest album revives the name and the music of Rocco Greco, a cellist-composer who can be considered the founder of the distinguished Neapolitan cello tradition that later produced more renowned names such as Lanzetti and Caporale. Few personal details are known of Grecos life. He lived in Naples during the second half of the 17th century, dying there at some point before 1718.

JUNO-nominated Canadian jazz quartet, Peripheral Vision launches their fourth album, More Songs About Error And Shame. "A rules-breaking quartet made up of some of the best modern players around" (CBC), Peripheral Vision extends their no-holds-barred performance aesthetic into the production concept on this album. Once again, they have teamed up with mad-scientist engineer, Jean Martin (Barnyard Records) to orchestrate a bigger sound for the record, adding layers of overdubs and studio treatments to the live-off-the-floor recordings. Peripheral Vision has always been a live show band, and the seven new Herring and Scott originals on More Songs About Error And Shame show what can be gained from years of touring, including three recent tours throughout Europe as well as many trips across Canada.
