The title of "The Decalogue" has a touch of the grandiose: it means "The Ten Commandments." Yet this score, composed by Sufjan Stevens for a dance work choreographed by Justin Peck that premiered with the New York City Ballet in May of 2017, is quiet and experimental. Stevens's piano score, as played and recorded by Timo Andres, sounds like etudes in the Romantic-modernist tradition, as if prompted by Debussy.

With his impressive artistic biography, Michael Formanek is one of the outstanding personalities of contemporary jazz as a composer, a bassist in ensembles and a soloist. Since arriving in New York in the early 1990s, Chris Speed has become one of the most vital improvising musicians on the scene through work that has always varied widely, moving from a jazz base out through various forms of folk, classical and rock music.

This album from violinist Tatiana Chulochnikova's explores the fascinating allusions between baroque and contemporary music through the prism of the repertoire for the unaccompanied violin. Two distinctive sound worlds coexist and reflect on each other in this dualistic album. This was made possible by using two different violins and by experimenting with the idea of the historical pitch as one of the expressive tools.

The first CD by the philharmonie zuidnederland was of works by Wagner and Tchaikovksy, under their chief conductor Dmitri Liss; this second CD promises to be even more spectacular. The principal work, Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, caused rapturous enthusiasm in a previous live performance and is very close to Liss’ own heart. Liss tells of the symphony’s première shortly after the death of Stalin in 1953: “In those days, it was extremely hazardous to reveal too much of yourself in a piece of music. Shostakovich was able to manage it and for that he has my lasting and increasing admiration. I come closer to the music’s heart each time I conduct this symphony”. The CD also includes an energetic live performance of Olga Victorova’s Quinlong Azure Dragon. This work too is close to Liss’ heart, as is the composer herself – Victorova is his wife. One more reason for philharmonie zuidnederland to pull out all the stops as they perform this work about a renowned Oriental dragon as well as Shostakovich’s masterpiece with passion and fire.

After gaining fairly the eye for her 2018 single, “You,” Dutch-born singer is prepping the discharge of her debut album. Titled Kairos, Nicole’s debut will arrive in simply two weeks on October 18. Sitting beneath Roc Nation, Kairos will characteristic 14 songs together with each remixes of “You” with Ghostface Killah & Rick Ross. As refined as it is technically challenging, the lute music of Albert de Rippe (né Alberto da Ripa) is notable for its lush palette and dense brilliance -illustrated by the miniature masterpieces heard here: fantasias, chanson intabulations and dance arrangements (the three most popular genres of the Renaissance repertoire), which in the hands of Paul O’Dette become marvellously expressive and poetic.

Nils Frahm announces the release of Encores 3 on 20 September 2019, the third and final instalment of his Encores series. The three EPs will be available as one full length release titled All Encores featuring 80 minutes of music on 18 October, to follow his masterful 2018 album All Melody. Whilst Encores 1 focused on an acoustic pallet of sounds with solo piano and harmonium at the core, and Encores 2 explored more ambient landscapes, now Encores 3 sees Nils expand on the percussive and electronic elements in his work.

Despite how preferable it would seem to be to live in blissful ignorance of the path that modern society has taken and just not care about anything other than your own personal demons, that’s still just what I described it as; blissful ignorance. In the eyes of some, it would be nice to not have to worry about issues such as drug addiction, government corruption, sexual abuse, and suicide. Not everyone sees it that way though. That includes the four guys in Badflower, an up-and-coming rock act from Los Angeles who have already been seeing a great deal of mainstream success, with lead single “Ghost” peaking at #11 on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart.
