McDowell may have been a musical conservative but, in spite of the European flavour of his music, he thought himself a true ‘American’ composer—favouring the influences of ‘the manly and free rudeness of the American Indian’ rather than jazz, which thought had too strong an eastern European, Bohemian inheritance.

Sony Classical is excited to present the fantastic 1984 recording of Yo-Yo Ma, Seiji Ozawa, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a newly remastered re-release. This stellar line-up got together to record R. Strauss’ Don Quixote - indisputably the composer’s finest example of musical painting, his most daring in design and most controversial in effects - and Schoenberg’s fascinating arrangement of Monn’s Harpsichord Concerto for Cello and Orchestra.

If the number of compositions written for a specific instrument is any indication of a predilection, then Ferdinand Ries did indeed have a soft place in his heart for the flute. He penned no fewer than six quartets for flute and string trio, a quintet for flute, violin, two violas, and violoncello, a trio for piano, flute and violoncello, and many works for flute and piano - more works than for any other wind instrument. His first Flute Quartet presents itself as a grand, imposing quartet in the affirmative key of C major and contains many surprising elements. Here too, as already in his symphonies and string quartets, Ries proves to be an entirely independent and original composer - despite his close association with Beethoven.

Several new versions of Tye’s Missa Euge bone have appeared since the Winchester Cathedral Choir first released this disc of Tye’s Cathedral music in 1991. However, and notwithstanding Jeremy Summerly’s splendid Naxos offering with the Oxford Camerata, in my view none matches the Winchester recording for sheer vitality and sonic brilliance.

A White Sport Coat And A Pink Crustacean (1973). While it still lies much closer to Nashville than Key West (like in the boisterous slide guitar solo that lights up "The Great Filling Station Holdup"), Jimmy Buffett's A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean does begin to delineate the blowsy, good-timin' Key West persona that would lead him to summer tour stardom and the adoration of millions of drinking buddies everywhere. "Why Don't We Get Drunk," "Railroad Lady," and "Grapefruit - Juicy Fruit" rightly became crowd pleasers. But Buffett reveals himself a storyteller with the touching sigh of "He Went to Paris," where a slide guitar appears again to lend a subtle gleam to the arrangement, or in the gorgeous, sweetly sad tale of a passed-away poet's unlikely posthumous success…

The cover's cutout silhouette of these guitar-slinging soul/blues women is a succinct visual overview of the rather ambiguous contents within. Recorded in preparation for 2007's Blues Caravan tour featuring journeywomen singer/songwriters Sue Foley and Deborah Coleman along with the comparatively fresh-faced Roxanne Potvin (whose first widely distributed set was released earlier the same year), the disc seems more like a respectable concert souvenir than an actual collaborative affair. The 11 tracks break down into three solo cuts from each participant, one shared and joyous effort on the closing cover of a Chess oldie, "In the Basement," and a crackling instrumental dominated by Foley's always impressive guitar. There are many fine moments here, especially as Coleman lays into an easy funk groove on James Brown's "Talking Loud" and on Potvin's emotionally charged ballad "Strong Enough to Hold You".

We got to know music composer Vic Van De Reijt on his previous compilations (with his hundred favorite French, German and 'Suri-Vlame' hits) as a man with an omnivorous taste in music, who managed to forge well-known and obscure hits together into a beautiful whole. The fifties are central to this compilation album. An exciting job, because there are quite a few fifties collectors in circulation. In the accompanying booklet, Van de Reijt defends his choices, especially to opt for the original versions and why he did not choose a Dutch repertoire ('they simply couldn't compete with other countries'). The five CDs are divided into one with instrumental songs, one with male and one with female soloists, one rock and roll CD and, the best, a CD with novelty hits.

Hungarian-born Sándor Veress (1907-1992) is a sadly neglected figure in modern music. Despite his pupilage under Bela Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, and even his succession over the latter as professor of composition at the Budapest School of Music in 1943, Veress has never attained the same international recognition as his two most successful compatriots. One might blame his preference for solitude or his idiomatic methodology for keeping him in obscurity. Yet as one who made the most of his outlier status and ideological exile, he seems never to have been one to wallow in self-pity. Exposed to much of the folk music that also captivated his mentors, Veress nurtured that same spirit when sociopolitical upheaval exacerbated his emigration to Switzlerland in 1949. Whereas Kodály in particular saw cultural preservation as central to the musical act, Veress saw it as an incision to be teased open and unraveled.

The last quality album from Judas Priest's commercial period, Defenders of the Faith doesn't quite reach the heights of British Steel or Screaming for Vengeance, in part because it lacks a standout single on the level of those two records' best material. That said, even if there's a low percentage of signature songs here, there's a remarkably high percentage of hidden gems waiting to be unearthed, making Defenders possibly the most underrated record in Priest's catalog. Musically, it follows the basic blueprint of Screaming for Vengeance, alternating intricate speed rockers with fist-pumping midtempo grooves and balancing moderate musical sophistication with commercial accessibility. It's a craftsmanlike record from a band that had been in the game for a full decade already, but was still vital and exciting, and decidedly not on autopilot (yet)…

Rolling Thunder Review The 1975 activities are now summarized in a box set, but the 76 version review is undeniable that it has become far from the official release. Rather, it was a time when the situation was more favorable than the previous year due to the live album “HARD RAIN” and the TV program in Real Thailand, but now the position is reversed. However, the 1976 edition review is blessed enough for the official release at least in terms of items, and the New Orleans evening show has been popular as a standard outflow sound board since the analog era.

Marcia Ball, born on the Texas/Louisiana border, has long been a superb performer, delivering her swampy blend of zydeco, blues, and gritty R&B with all the force of a Saturday night locomotive, and through 12 albums, she has never let that energy go. Roadside Attractions, her fifth release for Alligator Records, is no exception – it cooks and rattles and rocks with Ball's typical joyous energy and powerful piano. None of her many fans will be disappointed by this outing, but it is a little different for Ball in one respect – for the first time on one of her albums she has either written or co-written every song on it, and all of them draw on her thousands of hours on the road bringing her infectious brand of swampy boogie to the world.

The Best of Chi Coltrane draws only on material from her first two albums, and since these are vastly superior to the rest of her catalog, its title is more than justified. "Thunder and Lightning," "You Were My Friend," "Flyaway Bluebird," and "The Wheel of Life" are undoubtedly fine songs, and every track here is worth having. But anyone looking for an anthology, or career summation, will be disappointed. For an introduction to Coltrane's music, listeners would be better off tracking down her first two albums in their entirety, rather than buying this puzzling amalgamation of them.

Bob Dylan has been released since the 1978 World Tour in Paris in 1978. If you are a maniac who has collected Dylan’s sound source to some extent, you may think of Paris in 1978 as July 6th of “BORDER BENEATH THE SUN”. A sound source with the same taper as the recording of the Rolling Stones’ 1976 and Pink Floyd’s 1977 Paris performances. Above all, the clearness is outstanding, and the degree of turning on the sound image is also wonderful. It is no exaggeration to say that it is comparable to Mike Millard, and its high quality is the best in the European taper in the latter half of the 70’s.
