This is the tenth release in APR’s ongoing French Piano School series which aims to present important recordings from the often-forgotten pianists who represent the very distinctive French style of playing in the first half of the 20th century. Were it not for the chronic illness which dogged him after service in WW1 and led to his premature death, Robert Lortat (1885–1938) would undoubtedly have recorded more and been remembered as one of the greatest French pianists of the 20th century. He performed a wide repertoire, including much Fauré and Debussy, magnificently, but Chopin was central to his art.

Théodore Géricault’s hugely imposing painting The Raft of the Medusa has stimulated imaginative responses from numerous artists ever since its creation in 1819, including composer Hans Werner Henze and his librettist Ernst Schnabel, who were inspired by Géricault to write a political oratorio on the painting’s tragic historical subject in 1967. Noted for its harsh-edged sounds, and melding a tender depiction of suffering with scathing irony and gripping dramaturgy, the political scuffles and rowdiness that broke out at its aborted premiere lifted the work into the canon of great classical music scandals.

These partita’s have been composed more or less at the same time. However the difference in style can be clearly heard: Bach sticks to the older polyfonic way of composing while Graupner is more inclined to the galant style which is lighter and more elegant. Graupner has unjustly nearly fallen into oblivion while Bach is considered as the patriarch of Western classical music. During their lifetime however both composers were equally famous in Germany. Graupner has been in the service of the court of Darmstadt for about half a century. Because the counts of Darmstadt considered all of Graupners’ compositions as their property his works weren’t published and were not performed outside the walls of the palace. By the time Graupners compositions had become public property his name was almost completely forgotten. Time for a rehabilitation!
