This release captures a performance of the Verdi opera Don Carlo recorded at the Theatre Antique d'Orange in Orange, France on July 13, 1984. The cast of the performance includes Montserrat Caballé, Giacamo Aragall, Simon Estes, Grace Bumbry, and Renato Bruson.

The French band Rhesus O was formed in 1971 by future Magma keyboarder Jean-Pol Asseline with musicians from the jazz and jazz-rock field and released one self titled record. Soft Machine is the main influence to be found on the record and to a lesser extent Magma, Miles Davis and Frank Zappa. The record presents a melodic jazz-rock with folk and classical elements, based on an instrumentation of two keyboarders: Alain Monier on organ and Jean-Pol Asseline on e-piano and harpsichord, two bass players: Guy Pedersen on double bass and Francis Moze on electric lead bass, Thierry Blanchard on drums and Alain Hatot's sax & flute arrangements.

Eighty-six years old at this writing, American composer, arranger, producer and pianist Dave Grusin has composed many scores for feature films and television, won numerous awards for his soundtrack and record work – including an Academy Award and ten Grammy Awards – and is the co-founder of GRP Records. Presented here in their entireties are Grusin’s first and second LPs as a leader, A Jazz Version of the Broadway Hit Subways Are for Sleeping (Epic LN- 3829) and Piano, Strings and Moonlight: The Many Moods of Dave Grusin (Epic BN-26023). The former, recorded in a trio format with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Don Lamond, focuses on selections from the Broadway musical Subways Are for Sleeping. The latter is a collection of standards (plus the original tune “Sara Jane”) and features the trio (with Ossie Johnson on drums replacing Lamond) with the addition of strings arranged and conducted by Grusin himself.

Momo Kodama (whose acclaimed album, Point and Line, contrasted Toshio Hosakawa and Claude Debussy) presents the piano concerto which Hosakawa wrote for her, the shimmering "Lotus Under the Moonlight." Composed in 2006, "Lotus" is also an homage to Mozart, with distant echoes of his Concerto No.23 in A Major, the work with which it is paired here in a concert recording from Japan with Maestro Seiji Ozawa and his Mito Chamber Orchestra.

Altoists Phil Woods and Gene Quill always made for a mutually inspiring team. Both of the similar-sounding musicians were competitive, influenced by (but not imitative of) Charlie Parker, and really knew bebop. This LP features the two altoists in top form on six of Woods' obscure originals, plus "Airegin" and "Solar." The rhythm section (pianist George Syran, bassist Teddy Kotick, and drummer Nick Stabulas) is tasteful and quietly supportive.

Big Boy Pete has toured with the Beatles and Rolling Stones and released one of the first English psychedelic songs 'Cold Turkey' which is included in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum, Ohio's list of Psychedelic Classics. Guitarist and vocalist Peter Miller joined the Offbeats in the late 50's but was lured away to join the Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers in 1961 who up until 1965 enjoyed immense popularity in the UK. He then went 'solo' and in 1968 he released the classic 'Cold Turkey'. In the early 70's he moved to San Francisco where he continued to record and establish a very successful studio and The Audio Institute of America (an educational school for recording engineers) where thousands of students from more than 100 countries have been blissfully unaware that their Principal is Big Boy Pete! This album was recorded in the early 70's and is released for the first time on Angel Air.

Youthful pianist Eric Reed, who at the time of this recording was debuting as Marcus Roberts' replacement in the Wynton Marsalis band, plays carefully and sometimes tentatively on his first release as a leader. It's a trio affair, and although Reed doesn't throw many challenges toward bassist Dwayne Burno or drummer Gregory Hutchinson, he's certainly a solid player with the potential to become a great one.

In the time it took her to release her first three proper albums, Sarah McLachlan put out nearly as much music as B-sides, singles, or stray tracks for compilations and soundtracks, leaving no easy job for fans wanting her entire output…
