Kurt Maloo (ex Double, Troppo, PingPong) surprises with a refreshingly straight new album. His voice obviously feels comfortable in the slender arrangements, that work perfectly and rely on just a few basic instruments like guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. Although Kurt’s guitar definitely plays the main role in this production. You will hear familiar sounds (Drama Queen, Come Over Here, What About) without having a deja-vu, as well as two rocking tracks (Tumbling Skies, Sometimes Easy), which you might have not expected on a Maloo album in the first place. „Never Give Up“ though, is one of two dance tracks, that’s being chased to the fade out by Kurt’s funky guitar. When it’s over way too soon you have no other choice than to put it on repeat.

Influenced by releases on the Stax label, Carla Thomas or Booker T & The MGs, Arthur Conley, Sam and Dave, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin, German producer Siegfried E Loch formed Memphis Black as a studio group in the late 60s to highlight the Hammond playing of Ingfried Hoffmann. The "Soul Club" album features 12 tracks, one third original, two thirds covers, of soulful Hammond funk. "Why Don't You Play The Organ, Man" and "Hang 'Em high" were immediately pulled off the original release for DJs and consequently released on 7" in the UK, having a great impact in the Northern Soul scene right up to the present day. Obviously original copies of this LP are very thin on the ground, so take advantage of this reissue!

Richard Marx's 1991 release, Rush Street, is a varied album that was billed as "the dark side of Richard Marx," and was also his last true rock & roll album (subsequent releases found him venturing almost exclusively into the adult contemporary domain). Rush Street explores different musical territories, with almost each song emerging as a cautionary tale in some form or another. The album kicks off to a rocking start with the bluesy "Playing With Fire" and the harmonica-enhanced "Love Unemotional." "Superstar" finds Marx in a funky mode, "Big Boy Now" is a catchy ballad that could have been a single, and "Streets of Pain" and "I Get No Sleep" (the latter featuring Billy Joel banging away at a piano) come straight out of '80s arena rock.

After years of playing avant-garde jazz and post-bop music, Jay Hoggard returned to the straight-ahead bop-oriented tradition with this CD. On "Put on a Happy Face," a swinging "Blues Bags," and a medium-tempo version of Thelonious Monk's "Ruby, My Dear," Hoggard emulates Milt Jackson a bit. He also sounds quite comfortable playing Afro-Cuban jazz on "Aguacate" and his solos on the two other swinging originals is very much hard bop, although never overly predictable. Pianist Geri Allen, sounding more conservative than usual, is nevertheless still a stimulating soloist and accompanist, with bassist Ed Rozie and drummer Frederick Waits keeping the music swinging and moving.

An innovative genius, Claude Debussy is famous for his mature ‘Impressionist’ music, though he rather disliked the term. He frequently performed four-hand piano pieces in concert, most of the works on this disc either being composed or adapted by him for this line-up. Jay Hoggard's lone date for Contemporary (reissued as an OJC CD) was one of the vibraphonist's finest early sets. The music (all six songs are Hoggard originals) falls into the area of advanced hard bop. Chief among the sidemen are Chico Freeman (heard on tenor, soprano and bass clarinet), keyboardist Kenny Kirkland, and colorful percussionist Paulinho Da Costa; two songs utilize three vocalists, and there is a strong African feel to some of the ensembles.

Cryptic Scattered Images of Time Forgotten, is a musical memorial of pianist and band leader Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer. Like Sinbad, he roams through time, browsing through the chapters of his life with the expansive calm of bygone times, from his years in Novi Sad, through he time at the Budapest free music school, to his studies in the Netherlands, and this way free and contemporary music, dance music, and the jazz idiom all find a place next to one another.

Se è vero che la musica di questo CD è nata per accompagnare due film (Il più crudele dei giorni e L'isola), è altrettanto vero che Paolo Fresu non 'subisce' tale condizione, assemblando i brani in maniera tale da dar vita ad un lavoro unitario, dalla forte identità e tale da sintetizzare varie fasi della sua ormai già lunga carriera.

John Prine's second album was a cut below his first, only because the debut was a classic and the followup was merely terrific. "Sour Grapes" showed Prine's cracked sense of humor and "Souvenirs" his sentiment. Even if it was the second rank of his writing, Diamonds in the Rough demonstrated that Prine had an enduring talent that wasn't exhausted by one great album.
